Abstract

Multivariate calibration model can be used as an alternative method to predict the concentration of a gingerol compound. The prediction usually are carried out chemically through a long and expensive process using High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) measurement method. Since the number of samples (n) are less than of the number of independent variables (p), and between the independent variables are correlated, so the development of model using conventional regression is not valid. The combination of Discrete Wavelete Transform (DWT) with Ridge Regression and Principal Component Regression have been adopted in this paper to predict concentration of gingerol, and it showed a promising result.

Abstract

Many kinds of linear plasmids, or plasmid-like DNAs, in mitochondria have been reported in higher plants and fungi. Nevertheless, such plasmids were not previously known from the animal kingdom. Paramecium is the first example in which a mitochondrial plasmid-like DNA so far discovered among ciliates. In natural stocks, P. caudatum has one of three types of DNA : type I (6.4 kb), type II, a set of four DNAs (8.2 kb; 4.1 kb; 2.8kb; and 1.4 kb) and type III (8.6 kb). Paramecium caudatum stock GT704 only has type-II DNA. The 8.2 and 2.8 kb DNAs are dimers of the 4.1 and 1.4 kb DNA, respectively. The aim of this study was to determine the sequence of mitochondrial plasmid-like DNA in P. caudatum stock GT704 in order to identify potential gene products and other nucleotide sequences that might have relationship with integration of DNA and also the maintanance of DNA itself in mitochondria. The methods used in this study were isolation of the DNA, cloning and sequencing then followed by analysis of sequences obtained using available public domain. The dimers were found to be easily dissociated to monomers when treated with heat underconditions of low ionic strength. These results suggest that each monomer has a sticky end of single- stranded DNA that has complementary nucleotide sequences, and so attaches to each other at the end by base-pairing to form a dimer, leaving a nick that can be filled by ligation using ligase. Nucleotide sequences of some part of the DNA have been obtained randomly. Sequence analysis suggests that these dimers DNAs have 2 ORFs that code for putative RNA and DNA polymerases. It is assumed that the origin of this mitochondrial plasmid-like DNA is transposable element or some viruses since the motif EVI-1 (ectopic viral integration site-1) was found in the sequence. It is also assumed that this DNA can integrate into mtDNA since it also has some sequences homolog to the sequences of mt- DNA of some ciliates.

Abstract

In this work, mixing rule of Sanches-Lacombe equation of state (SL-EoS) was developed for estimating vapor-liquid equilibria of solvent-polymer systems or solubility of solvent in polymer solutions. The model was derived by matching excess Gibbs energy of Sanches-Lacombe equation of state and that of group contribution model at zero pressure. Present model can be applied to wide range of pressure. In addition, this model covers systems with various molecular interactions, since functional group interaction parameters of UNIFAC-FV and UNIFAC-ZM models have been available for various groups.

Abstract

Through the experimental work on dry end milling of an aeronautical material Ti-6242S, the extended Taylor models for volume of material removal (Q.Vc 2.2- .fz 1.98.aa 1.96=3.318x103) and tool life (T.Vc 3.3.fz 2.97.aa 2.80- =1.531x106) are resulted for characterizing the performance of the off-centre ball end milling alloyed carbide tool (W-(Ti/Ta/Nb)C-Co). Further analysis on the models result the optimum cutting conditions (Vc 88 m/min at fz 0.20 mm/tooth, Vc 113.5 m/min at fz 0.15 mm/tooth, and Vc 163 m/min at fz 0.10 mm/tooth) as the best compromise among cutting speed (Vc), material removal rate (MRR=Q/T) (cm3 /min) and T (min). Moreover, it can be interpreted that the tool failure mode, tool wear mechanism and the behaviour of tool performance are changing at the optimum cutting conditions given by the models that plot in a chart of MRR-T-Vc. By utilizing the FEM simulation, the chip morphology, contact length at the tool-chip interface and the tribological aspects (temperature, pressure) in machining at the optimum cutting conditions can be evaluated. The results of simulation support the interpretation of experimental results.

Abstract

According to previous studies on Surabaya River water, quality of this river water was very bad or on polluted condition. This conclusion was based on monitoring data of water quality at several monitoring points. Because of river water quality is a fluctuative condition, many monitoring data are needed. While, monitoring of Surabaya River water quality was done routinely at nine monitoring points. Amount of the monitoring point is not enough when data will be used for determining water quality condition. For this reason, it is need to develop a method to estimate overall river water quality based on a little amount of data. One of estimation method is Kalman filter, an algorithm that combines a model and a measurement. The experiment of Kalman filter algorithm was conducted. The results were accurate and closely with a measurement. Based on the results, application of Kalman filter algorithm will help to predict water quality for the future and to estimate overall water quality along of river, although amount of measurement data is a little.
