Abstract

The issue of violence has always been existent in world religions including Islam. The image of Islam as a violent religion has been described in various media espe-cially in the case of terrorism. This phenomenon leads to questions on how issues of violence are conveyed in Islamic teachings and how they have been understood differently by Muslims. This article aims to answer such questions by discussing the duty of Muslims, jihad, spirit of the Qur’an, and interpretation issues. The writing found that overgeneralization of a particular case in Qur’anic stories occurred; differences in interpretation are caused by the limitation of human beings in viewing their present reality and the reality of the past; issues of violence in the Qur’an are inevitable since the Qur’an was revealed at a time of extensive violence throughout human life, while the spirit of Islam is in creating peace among fellow human being; and a number of Muslims regard the prophet Muhammad’s life time as the pinnacle of Islamic civilization. These findings lead to the conclusion that issues of violence in Islamic teachings are always interpreted differently in a variety of manners.

Abstract

This article describes the process of how knowledge is formed and formulated with sensory perception in the form of experience. In Islamic philosophy, sensory experience that generates knowledge has never happened in the absence of mental existence as one of the essential principles of the philosophy of Mulla Sadra. Al- though the sensory perception is not the only one, Sadra considers that acceptable reason as sensory observation is a result of the unity of subject and object. This concept provides a basis for thinking that any form of authenticity from fundamen- tal ideas give meaning to the doctrine of the other. Without that sense, perception will never be materialized. This perception involves the awareness that comes from the soul as an active agent. Rejecting perception means the rejection of the value of knowledge. In Mulla Sadra’s argument, the implications of mental concepts in the sensual perception will influence sense objects.

Abstract

This article is written based on ethnographical notes, through observation, interviews, and direct involvement in the lesser pilgrimage (umroh) to Medina on March 12-20, 2016. The writing focuses on the performance of the ritual and other factors which have influenced the development of the holy city from social, eco-nomic, and cultural perspectives making the modern city of Medina. This article reveals that Medina as a holy city of pilgrimage destination grows with modern capitalism with the mushrooming business in accommodation and world products. Not only does the religion of Islam mix with capitalism, but the combination of the two does not decrease the sacrality of the city and the performance of the rituals in the city. In fact, the sacrality and holiness remain intact amidst commercialization of the city in the forms of luxuriouos hotels, malls, and modern kiosks. What is more, modern Medina is a symbol of plurality with the Muslim visitors for pilgrimage coming from different countries who bring their own local cultures and various religious traditions seen in their diverse fashions, traditions, and religious rites.
