Abstract

Quranic exegesis has a special place in the development of Islamic intellectual tradition and civilization at large. As the main source of Islamic teaching, for centuries Muslims have attempted to understand the various meanings of the Qur’an in order to be in line with the current needs of the society through the process of contextualization. In this article, the author presents and explains the way in which Abdullah Saeed, a professor in Islamic studies from the the University of Melbourne, Australia, contextualize the meaning of the Quran. In particular, this article analyzes some methodological aspects proposed by Saeed in the qontextualization of the Qur’an: 1) identifying the world of the text; 2) analyzing text critically; 3) connecting the text to the early Islamic community as the first receivers; and 4) relating the text to the current needs of society. Keywords: Quranic exegesis, Abdullah Saeed, tafsir methodology, contextualization.

Abstract

This paper explores the shift in the da’wah concept taking place in the coastal area of Java by examining two manuscripts written by two notable figures in the 19th and 20th centuries, Kiai Saleh Darat from Semarang and Kiai Bisri Musthofa from Rembang. These two Islamic scholars are prolific writers and have penned a number of works in Arab- Pegon. Their writings have become references for Islamic students (santri) studying in traditional educational institutions in coastal areas of Java over decades. This paper attempts to answer the following questions: how the dakwah concept is conceived in the Kyai Saleh Darat’s and Kiai Bisri Musthfa’s works? How do their strategies in dakwah and the implementation shari’a influence the views of Islamic students and scholars in the coastal areas of Java? Why do we have to see coastal areas of Java as an instrument? From the narratives of Islamic historiography in Southeast Asia, coastal area of Java has an important position because it has become a node of the Islamic scholar networks. By utilizing the genealogical concept, this paper traces the roots and intellectual origin of the Javanese Islamic scholarship. Keywords: Java coastal areas, discourse production, da’wah, Islamic scholars, kiai Saleh Darat, kiai Bisri Musthofa.

Abstract

Since its inception in 1990, Asian Muslim Action Network (AMAN) was an endeavor to bring and link all Muslim and non Muslim as well, both individual and groups, in Asia to respond and meet the challenges faced by the community in the region. As a Muslim organization, AMAN bases itself on fundamental Islamic teachings based on the Quran and intra and inter-faith element has been essential in AMAN’s activities for the past 20 years. With this paper, the author examines AMAN’s experience on 3 issues. First, the importance of Islam through its faith based organization to look and work for peace of all mankind. In this part, Islam ‘seems’ universal for peace. Second, meaning of peace. There can be different faces of peace depending on the context we face. Thus, question of ‘what is peace’ needs a modification to be “what does it mean to be Peaceful?” Lastly, the challenges for faith based organization to set up inter-faith cooperation in working toward the mutually desired situation that enables peace to foster. Keywords: faith based organization, peace, conflict, inter-faith cooperation.

This article examines the debates between the Islamic group and secular nationalist group during pre Independence era on the the relationship between Islam and the state. The major factors stimulating the conflicts in conceiving the relationship between Islam and the state among Indonesian politicians was not about the disparity of the level of religiosity. Instead, it signifies the faiule of the political elites in reconciling different political views among Indoensians, as if Islam and nationalism are different and conflicting concepts. This article, therefore, discusses the ideas proposed by these two competing groups, Islamist and nationalist, and their ideological inclination. In particular, this article sees to what extent the Islamic group contributed to the state formation after Independence era. Keywords: Islam, the state, secularnationalist, ideology.
