Abstract

This paper employs an integrated-interconnected perspective to examine Sufi groups and theirroles in developing Islamic teachings and performing social functions. Known as communities primarily characterized by their esoteric religious interpretation and Teacher- Student structured relationship, Sufi groups can be approached through analyzing their religious doctrines as well as their social practice. Combining these two analytical approaches, this paper argues that the dynamics of Sufi groups rests up on three factors. Firstly, the development of Sufi doctrines into ritual practices serves toproduce and strengthen particular patterns of social solidarity among the followers. Secondly, the participation of Sufi groups in the life of plural societal relations may take form in a distinct social movement, particularly when they are involved in the so-calledpublic spiritual and morality enforcement.Thirdly, Sufi groups can be classified into three groups: pragmatic-inclusive, fundamentalistexclusive, orpragmatic-fundamentalist.

Abstract

Islamic theology and the fie pillars of Islam have historical and current roles in enhancing Islamic social work practices in Muslim communities. These effects are explored by means of literature review and via comparisons among Muslim populations and other religious followers and with an examination of the theology of Shi’i Muslims and Sunni Muslims. Basic concepts of Islam, such as shahada (testimony), prayers, fasting, zakat, and pilgrimage, are recommended for use by Muslim social workers in their practice with Muslim clients.

Abstract

This thesis is aimed to analyze the peasant resistance against the iron sand mining that occurred in Kulon Progo. As its starting point, this study is based on the change in political attitude of peasants, who were initially against it turned into approving to the iron sand mining. Through an approach of James C. Scott’s “moral economy of peasant” and Samuel L. Popkin’s “political economy”, this research is reviewed in descriptive analysis of how the change in political attitude of peasants eventually happen. With that analysis, this study shows that the changes in political attitudes of peasants in response to the expansion of mining capitalism is nothing more than a political compromise by the peasants in response to the expansion of mining capitalism. What is actually going to be refused is the ways of investors / companies and countries in expansion which is capitalist bias, which only creates a farming community becomes eliminated to access the available resources.

Abstract

The Problem of waste, especially the domestic one, needs to be addressed wisely. Up to now, the management of domestic waste is based on sanitary landfil system, which requires all domestic wastes to be managed, condensed, and buried as prescribed in Perda No.3 Tahun 2013 on the Management of Domestic Waste and Other Similar Wastes. The Practice of this bylaw could not be optimized yet because the Final Disposal at Piyungan is only operated in every three days, not in a daily basis. Final Waste Disposal (TPA) of Piyungan located in Sitimulyo Village. It established in 1995 and started their operation in 1996. The location of TPA Piyungan which is not far from the villagers’ settlement, especially those who live in Ngablak Hamlet, Sitimulyo Village, has resulted on various comments among the villagers on the existence of the TPA. Some villagers supported the existence of the TPA based on some economic benefis. Others are tend to reject the TPA based on air and water pollutions of the TPA. The aim of this research is to map the response of the villagers of Sitimulyo and the policy of the Village government on the issue of the management of TPA Piyungan. The data in this research arecollected through in-depth interview, newspapers, and other research reports. This research uses Blummer’s symbolic interactionism theory to analyze the data. This research fids several important issues: First, since its operation in 1995, TPA Piyungan has resulted on various responses among the villagers. Those who support the TPA usually benefied economically, while those who are not have any benefi tend to reject the existence of the TPA. Second, The Sitimulyo government is on the neutral position. They will ask the provincial governmen of Yogyakarta to close the TPA if most of the villagers want to do so. They are also ready to preserve the existence of the TPA, if it is based on the majority voices of the villagers.

Abstract

The problems of managing HIV/AIDS programs arises when religious social organizations run the program. Religious organizations are required to run the program effectively. However, the implementation is not easy since they have to faced the “body of knowledge” of HIV/AIDS programs. Therefore, the ability of the organization to undertake this program is crucial. Religious organizations have a role to still keep the significance of religious values, at the same time to avoid conflct with the strategies possessed in HIV programs. This study explores three issues in the Health Organization of Nahdlatul Ulama, the interaction of values and norms, efforts to establish the organization legitimacy, and the ability to perform knowledge management. Qualitative research methods is used to explore the three issues mentioned above. The study results showed that the Health Organization of Nahdlatul Ulama as a socioreligious organization is able to answer sensitive issues in HIV/AIDS programs to reduce stigma and discrimination, building of organization legitimacy and conducting of knowledge management effectively

Abstract

Depending on the condition of vulnerability, disasters bring about different consequences to different households. Using the Sustainable Livelihood (SLA) framework, the research carried out in the earthquake-prone area of Bantul-Yogyakarta results in three conclusions. First, the wealthiest suffer the least because of their capabilities of reducing the impact of earthquake disaster by fortifying their houses and by improving their livelihood assets. Second, despite their sufferings, the poor tend to be more able to reduce the impact of future disaster event to their livelihoods, thanks to the strong social capital which had minimized the cost of housing reconstruction. Third, it is the self-suffiient group which is most prone to the disaster event. This is due their wealth had been eroded by overwhelming cost of house reconstruction and their inabilities to reduce labor cost.

Abstract

This paper tries to reconsidering the theory of authority, propounded by Max Weber, a pioneer of classical theory of sociology, particularly on his idea of charisma. Weber predicted that modernisation, as represented by the rationalisation process which is unstoppable phenomena for modern world lead the changing process of charismatic authority into other forms of authorities, especially the legal-rational one. By describing the dynamics of Kyai’s charismatic authority within the pesantren milieu, the rationalisation process tends to enhance the existence of charismatic authority of kyai. Based on a case study of a famous traditional pesantren in Yogyakarta, this paper elaborates the process of rationalisation describes how all instruments of traditional pesantren, including those that are resulted from the process, have contribution in preserving and maintaining the charismatic authority o kyai. Most members of traditional pesantren even believe that the quality of charisma, which is laid on the foundation of supernatural power, can be transmitted to the next successor through the institutionalisation of practices to gain that power.
