Abstract

This study focused on the washback effects of classroom tests administered in Junior High School in Indonesian EFL contexts. To obtain the expected data two sets of questionnaires were delivered to the teachers and the students of Junior High schools in Surabaya, Indonesia. Likert scales were used to measure the obtained data. The study revealed that both teachers and students tried hard to prepare classroom tests. Passing classroom tests seemed to be the priority rather than the learning objectives themselves. Exercises for classroom test were therefore mostly given to the students. The materials learned by the students were mostly those students believed or predicted to be the materials for the tests. To some extents thus classroom tests may have both negative as well as positive effects Key Words: Washback Effect, Classroom Tests, Necessary and Unnecessary Decisions.

Abstract

Distillation system using direct solar energy, often called solar still, has been considered as the environmentally friendly system in utilizing solar energy. In this study, double slope solar still has been fabricated with galvanis basin for the test solution and also the addition of fresnel lens solar collector. The issues to be discussed include how much the average distilled water (distilant) can be produced from the system, so that the result can be compared to the theoretically distilant for obtaining an efficiency of the distillation system that has been fabricated. In distilant composition testing, salinity testing performed in both test solution (NaCl solution) and distilant, so it can be seen the reduction in salinity in the distillation process on the system. The measurement was conducted in May 2014, the average solar irradiation was recorded in the range 309.4 - 574.4 Watt/m2 and a system efficiency is obtained around 6- 8,2%. In salinity testing, the result showed that the salinity of distilant decreased by 96.42% compared to the test solution.

Abstract

In the past few years, there have been controversial issues regarding the national exams vis-à-vis its legal use as a part of graduation decision, the administration, and the result. The history of the national exam of the elementary and the secondary schools dates back from the late 1960s. Changes of government’s policies concerning the implementation of the national exam and the use of the result should be understood as an effort of the betterment of the education system in Indonesia. Philosophically, the national exam should have the most important characteristics of a test: the validity and accountability. The Ministry of Education and Culture has stipulated that the development and the use of the English National Exam for the junior high school is made in such a way to measure the communicative skill at the functional level in the daily communication which is in line with the goals of the English teaching as contained in framework of the National Examination or Kisi-Kisi Ujian Nasional SMP. This English National Exam consists of 50 multiple choice items covering 45 reading comprehension questions, 3 items of grammar, and 2 items to measure writing skills. As the most items focus on reading comprehension questions, this paper presents the analysis of the questions based on the micro- and macro skills proposed by Brown (2004). The result shows that the levels of the questions tend to be more to measure the macro-skills of reading. As both types of skills are grouped hierarchically, the higher levels of the skills require the manipulation of the lower skills. It is most important for the English teachers to consider this concept when preparing lesson, doing the class activities, especially when guiding students to comprehend texts.

Abstract

Foucault pendulum experiment was conducted at the Physics Laboratory of Widya Mandala Catholic University Surabaya. The goal of the experiment was to measure the latitude of Surabaya. The experimental results showed that the latitude of Surabaya was in the interval of 8.43o S and 8.57o S with relative error of 0.85%. Comparing these values with the reference data, it was found out that the latitude of Surabaya is in the interval of 7.15 S and 7.35o S. The deviation of the experimental results from the reference values was around 14.7%. The main source of the deviation was the angle precision measurement of the device.

Abstract

Teams-Games-Tournament, being one of cooperative learning method, is carefully structured sequence of teaching-learning activities, a blend of three educational techniques-small groups, instructional games, and tournaments. Therefore, this present study aims to investigate the young learners’ achievement towards the student-centered approach through Team Games Tournament (TGT) technique and teacher-centered approach through flashcard teaching technique in learning grammar. A quasi experimental was employed in this study. The writer used two classes as the experimental and control groups. The writer also developed a research instrument which contains fifteen items. After the meetings of the treatment, the writer administered a post test to both classes. Having collected the data, the writer analyzed the mean scores of post-test using independent sample t-test. From the statistical data, the study reveals that there is a significant difference on the students’ grammar achievement between those taught using TGT technique and that taught using Flashcard teaching technique.

Abstract

This study examined the similarity and difference between Grice’s conversational principles and debate competition principles in the grand final of an East Java highshool debate competition. Most highschool debaters including the researcher perceived that there would be differences. Using the result of open-response questionnaires distributed to the adjudicator and 6 participants of the grand final of the competition, the researcher then inteviewed and discussed the debate transcript and the result of open-response questionnaires with some triangulators from the perspective of Grice’s conversational principles and competitive debate principles. The study reported that the maxims that are mostly interpreted differently in this debate are the violation of maxim of quantity and the observation of maxim of quality. This research finding also proved that the maxims that are mostly interpreted similarly in this debate are the violation of maxim of quality and the observation of maxim of quantity.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to find out which techniques affect the students’ reading achievement better. The students’ reading achievement is also specified in three types of reading questions; factual, inference, and main idea questions. In this study, the writer used two classes of the eleventh grade belonging to the school year of 2005-2006 as the subject of the study. The writer also developed a research instrument which contains 20 objective items in the form of multiple choices. Each item has four options with one correct answer. After three meetings of treatment, the writer administered a post test to both classes. Having collected the data, the writer analyzed the mean scores of post test using t-test for independent samples at .05 level of significance and 75 degrees of freedom. The result showed that the students taught by using translation technique have better reading achievement than those taught by M.U.R.D.E.R technique.

Abstract

This paper is an overview of empirical studies on language across curriculum. The emphasis of the review is on the ‘what’ and ‘how. The ‘what’ deals with the research areas and purposes. The ‘how’ deals with the approach and technique, setting and participants to set out the research. The purpose of the discussion that follows is to help us see what has been studied and how it has been researched. These discussions should help content and language specialists identify the range of factors related to English across the curriculum. The purpose of this paper is two-folds: to present important research model in English across curriculum and to suggest how insights from theory and research can be introduced in the classroom.

Abstract

It is important for EFL readers to realize that they use certain strategies when they find difficulties in reading comprehension. These strategies have to be explored and selected for training for better comprehension. This exploration administered the MARSI reading questionnaire to identify university students’ reading strategies and their frequency of use. The global and support strategies turned to be the strategies of the medium level of use whereas the problem-solving strategies were at the high level of use. An interesting finding is that there was enough familiarity with the global and support strategies. The high-level of frequency of the problem-solving strategies indicate that there were a lot of difficulties in reading comprehension and the problem-solving strategies are worth training. To be more convincing, these findings would have to be supported by think-aloud protocols in real reading.
