Abstract

Image segmentation, a fundamental task in computer vision, has been widely used in recent years in many fields. Dealing with the graph cut optimization problem obtains the image segmentation results. In this study, a novel algorithm with weighted graphs was constructed to solve the image segmentation problem through minimization of an energy function. A binary vector of the segmentation label was defined to describe both the foreground and the background of an image. To demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed method, four various types of images were used to construct a series of experiments. Experimental results indicate that compared with other methods, the proposed algorithm can effectively promote the quality of image segmentation under three performance evaluation metrics, namely, misclassification error rate, rate of the number of background pixels, and the ratio of the number of wrongly classified foreground pixels.

Abstract

In view of the low execution efficiency and poor practicability of the existing neighbor-finding method, a fast neighbor-finding algorithm is put forward on the basis of Square Non-symmetry and Anti-packing Model (SNAM) for binary-image. First of all, the improved minor-diagonal scanning way is applied to strengthen SNAM’s adaptability to various textures, thus reducing the total number of nodes after coding; then the storage structures for its sub-patterns are standardized and a grid array is used to recover the spatial-position relationships among sub-patterns, so as to further reduce the complexity of the neighbor-finding algorithm. Experimental result shows that this method’s execution efficiency is significantly higher than that of the classic Linear Quad Tree (LQT)-based neighbor-finding method.

Abstract

Evolutionary methods dominate in the computation for breaking out the real problems. For a couple of years, it is more popular than classical methods for solving many cases. Technically, one of real problems is the emission dispatch and economic dispatch (EDED) problem. The EDED problem is used to optimize the power system operation (PSO) at a certain time under some constraints. This paper presents performance comparison between Harvest Season Artificial Bee Colony (HSABC) and Genetic Algorithms on the EDED problem applied to the IEEE-62 bus system. Simulation results show that the tested methods have difference characteristics and abilities for optimizing the PSO based on the EDED problem.

Abstract

Mathematics and science are two important subjects for students to do well in school. Unfortunately majority of the students are having difficulties in coping with these subjects. Malaysia is ranked third lowest in the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) for mathematics and science. An emotionally disturbed student seems to have problem coping with the learning of mathematics and science thus it is important to identify the demotivating factors affecting the performance of such students. In this paper, it analyze the correlation of precursor emotion towards student interest in learning mathematics and science using electroencephalogram (EEG) device. This correlation and their respective emotion can be analyzed based on the 2-D Affective Space Model (ASM) using four basic emotions of happiness, calmness, fear and sadness as reference stimuli. EEG device was used to extract brain waves signal while answering the mathematics and science questions. The EEG signals were captured on the scalp of the student and features extracted using Mel Frequency Cepstral Coefficient (MFCC). Neural network classifier of Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) was used to classify the valence and arousal axes for the ASM. Preliminary results show the relationship of precursor emotion and the dynamic emotions of the student while taking the mathematics and science test. We hope that these results can help us further relate the behavior and interest of students towards the learning of mathematics and science.

Abstract

PV has become universal for power utility applications in comparison to conventional technologies when it comes to economic competitiveness. As the efficiency of solar PV panel is low, it becomes mandatory to extract maximum power from the PV panel at any given period of time. Maximum Power and efficiency in Photovoltaics can be improved by Maximum Power Point tracking even under distributed temperature and irradiance functions. The paper attempts to compare two different Buck converter models based on predictive control. The two converter models using State space differential equation and direct component in MATLAB/SIMULINK are optimized through PID and FLC to obtain increased gain and desired converter output. A PV system connected with Buck converter using an intelligent controller (FLC) for extracting maximum power at different environmental conditions is proposed and the results are compared with conventional PID controller.

Abstract

A monitoring system for geological archives with TCP/IP network communication is designed in this research to address wide distribution range, long distance, slow data updating, and difficult maintenance of city and county geological archives. The designed system uses the single chip STC11F32XE and the Ethernet control chip RTL8019AS as a hardware platform. The hardware design scheme, software design method, and the main programming flowchart of the geological archive monitoring unit were presented, and a specific data test was carried out. This monitoring system not only monitors and controls temperature, humidity, ponding, power supply, and other environmental data in geological archives, but also realizes geological data transmission between city (county) and provincial geological archives. In addition, this system is designed with a GSM warning mechanism, which could accelerate the quick response mechanism of the system. The entire monitoring system is accessed through the provincial environmental resources website with a fixed IP address. To ensure standardization of the monitoring system, the data transmission standard of the application layer used the associated standards of the Ministry of National Land and Resources. The entire system design improves the storage environment of the geological data effectively. It provides important data support to solve inconsistencies between provincial and city (county) geological data, as well as ensures scientific management of geological issues.
