Abstract

The relationship between Islam and the West faces increasing tension nowadays. This tension is triggered by many terrorist acts in western countries. The West points out that Islam stands behind this ongoing terror, while Muslims are reluctant to be accused as perpetrators of terror. Terrorism in western countries emerges not only because of social, religious, ideological, and political movements, but also due to the expansion of the industrialization process which has resulted in negative effects for certain countries. The United States of America has contributed to this tension. A double standard by the West when promoting and implementing human right issues, especially in Israel and Palestine, has become another trigger for the growing tension between Islam and the West. This article examines this problem by analyzing the perspectives of Indonesian Muslim thinkers.

Abstract

The doctrine of Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jama`ah has been exploited by two major Muslim organizations in Indonesia, NU and Muhammadiyah, as the theological basis in determining their religious identity and rituals. Although these organizations claim that all Muslims should adhere to the doctrines of Ahl al-Sunnah, they have never clearly defined that term. This paper discusses in detail the meaning of the term followed by an examination of the ways in which those two Muslim organizations attach themselves to this doctrine. This paper argues that, although the NU links itself to this doctrine, it is still necessary to critically examine to what extent its members apply the doctrines of Ahl al-Sunnah in their daily life. Muhammadiyah, on the other hand, is not obsessed with the claim of being faithful to the doctrines of Ahl al-Sunnah, although its constitution mentions that they advocate theological creeds which are evidently in line with the precepts of Ahl al-Sunnah.

Abstract

This study discusses the discourse on democracy within the context of the larger debate on Islam-state relations in Indonesia and correlates the religious approach with theories of democracy. It begins with a brief description of types of democracy formulated by political scientists in order to help us classify the Islamic groups efforts in the process of democratization in Indonesia. This is followed by an exploration of these groups views of democracy and their classification on the basis of their religious approach. The study considers both the debate about Islam-state relations and democracy as a competitive process over the interpretation of the predominant Islamic doctrine among the silent majority of the people. This study will also explore the role which Islam should play in the process of democratization. I will argue that the compatibility of Islam with democracy and democratization in the modern sense depends on the identification of universal values.
