The journal puts emphasis on aspects related to Islamic studies in an Indonesian context, with special reference to culture, politics, society, economics, history, and doctrines. ISLAMIC ORGANIZATIONS IN NORTH SUMATRA: The Politics of Initial Establishment and Later Development Al Rasyidin

This paper describes the politics of initial establishment and later development of four Islamic organizations in North Sumatra: Muhammadiyah, Al Jam`iatul Washliyah, Nahdlatul Ulama, and Al Ittihadiyah. It particularly focuses on the historical evolution and dynamics of these four Islamic organizations. As a subject of analysis, it, for the most part, assesses the aspects of ethnicity, religious doctrine, educational institution, and political aspiration reflected by these organizations in that area. The paper shows that these four organizations have contributed much to the progress of the Islamic community in this region.

Islamic Law is a set of promoted regulations adjusting human relationship to the Creator, human being and the environment based on Islamic doctrines. The Islamic Law has been established in Indonesia and effectively implemented in Indonesian Religious Court based on Law Number 7 of 1989. The law covers the areas of marriage, inheritance, will, bequest, benefaction and alms. In addition, especially in Aceh, with its peculiar feature, Islamic Law has been applied normatively, and in several areas it has been applied based on Local Regulations. However to perform the Islamic Law, it depends on faith and piety of the members of Islam. Thereby, although the formal law in juridical manner of Islamic Law in Indonesia was justly applied in limited civil law, however the Muslim society have stepped forward in applying Islamic Law in various Islamic social institutions.

INCORPORATING ISLAMISM INTO SECULAR EDUCATION SYSTEM: An Attempt of Gradual Islamization of the State and Society by an Indonesian Tarbiyah Movement in Jambi Suaidi Asyari

The downfall of the New Order regime in 1998, which was soon followed by the liberalization policy in almost every aspect of politics, opened vast opportunities for the emergence of political expressions including Islamism into the public space. While violent responses indicated by some Islamic groups, who take advantage of the weakening of the state, Tarbiyah Movement (harakah tarbiyah) consistently performs gradual Islamization through the system provided by the state. Based on a field research in Jambi, Sumatra, this article discusses the efforts undertaken by the group to incorporate their Islamist ideas into secular education system at the levels of primary and secondary education. This article argues that these all efforts are part of Islamization process of society and the state in Indonesia after the failure of its leaders in doing the same thing at the political level especially in the aftermath of the 1999 general election.

FEMALE IMAM AND KHATIB: The Progressive Tradition of Gender-Responsive Practices in Balingka, West Sumatera Busyro Busyro

The practice of allowing women to be the imam and khatib for Eid prayer in Balingka has become a long tradition for more than a century. The simple way of thinking, the topographic problem, and the intention to form united community have allowed this tradition to be still practiced today. In reality, such tradition has never been mentioned in the classic fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence). In fact, allowing women to be the imam and khatib in Eid prayer never occurs in Islamic community from other regions. To reach the goal of silaturrahim (the bond of friendship) between the local settlers and perantau (local people who live or work in other regions) also contribute to the perseverance of this tradition. This practice serves as the intermediary between the tendencies of fanaticism of traditional Islam and the radical religious changes offered by liberal Islam. Unknowingly, this practice, which is started from the small village, and inspired from the simple way of thinking, has implemented the notion of gender equality that promoted by the group of progressive Islam.
