Abstract

Developing metacognitive skills is a prominent objective in the education field. Several institutions use the skills to facilitate students’ thinking processes. This study aims to overcome student misconceptions in energetic materials by implementing teaching materials based on metacognitive skills. Several studies have shown that metacognitive skills have played a role in reducing misconceptions through the process of problem-solving in science learning. The subjects of this research are students majoring in chemistry at Universitas Negeri Surabaya, Indonesia. Students’ conception status is determined by the result of a conception test equipped with the Certainty of Response Index. With descriptive analysis techniques, results indicated that students who had the potential misconceptions status at the beginning had experienced self-actualization: (1) the number of students who have “the right concept” is more than those who “do not know the concept” and have “misconceptions,” and (2) the number of students who have status least misconception. Based on the results of the study, the implementation of metacognitive skills-based teaching materials can overcome student misconceptions in energetic material.

Abstract

This study intended to describe the effectiveness of the GEM-CL learning model selaras Bakar Batu cultural practice on chapter heat and temperature. This type of research was quasi-experiment with pretest and post-test control group design. The study population was all students of class XI IPA SMAN 1 Jayapura. The sampling technique used was simple random sampling. The selected classes were XI IPA-3 as an experimental class and class XI IPA-5 as a control class. Data collection instruments were tests based on higher-order thinking skills and questionnaires to collect students’ responses. Data analysis was done by t-test, N-gain, and effect size for data collecting from test data while data from questionnaires were analyzed by descriptive qualitative analysis. It was concluded that the model is effective to apply in physics learning to preserve students’ conceptual understanding and improve students’ higher-order thinking skills. Further study on GEM-CL to other cultural practices and physics chapter in Indonesia would would strengthen this learning model.

Abstract

The results of previous researches indicated that there were problems with the mental model and students’ conceptual understanding of the action-reaction law (Newton’s third law, NTL). This research aimed to reveal the effect of a simple approach in teaching NTL. The research was conducted in the first-year of pre-service physics teachers at the Physics Education Department of Tadulako University. Research designs for three consecutive years were (1) one-group, pre-test, and post-test design, (2) a static group comparison (pre-test for the experimental group), and (3) a quasi-experimental. The approach used was an interactive demonstration that consisted of five phases, i.e: eliciting an intuitive argument, demonstrating a continuous force: pulling, demonstrating a continuous force: pushing, demonstrating impulsive force: collisions, and refining the concept with Elby’s pair. Data were collected using a multiple-choice test developed in previous research. The results of the data analyses showed that the approach could improve students’ understanding of the action-reaction law, supporting conceptual change by exhibiting N-gain in the moderate and high categories. The instructional design can be considered for implementation in learning in high schools, lecture on pre-service physics teachers and basic physics lecture, in general..

Abstract

A competent biology educator should be efficient in the design, organizing, and execution of practical work and the evaluation of practical skills. Nevertheless, according to past research, the participation of students in conducting experiments is inadequate, and the teachers are not guiding them effectively. One of the issues that could lead to this problem is the lack of efficiency of the teacher to carry out practical work. To gauge this problem, a qualitative study has been conducted. The study involves eight biology teachers from eight secondary schools in two states in Malaysia, namely Kuala Lumpur and Selangor. Data were collected through observation at biology laboratory, interviews with biology teachers, and analysis of related documents such as lesson plans. Collected data were analyzed using constant comparative data analysis methods to explain the core phenomenon of this study. Three (3) themes emerged in this study: (i) difficulty in designing and planning practical lessons effectively, (ii) insufficient preparation before conducting practical lessons and (iii) improper evaluation of students’ achievement in biology practical lessons. The results of this study offer information on the competence of biology teachers, which can be used to enhance the quality and standards of biology teaching and learning.

Abstract

Phytoremediation is a practical, environmentally-friendly, low-cost technological solution used to clean various types of pollution, including metals, pesticide residues, and oils from contaminated soil and water. In this study, Cordyline fruticosa was planted in the lead-contaminated soil. Each pot was given 250 mg/kg and 375 mg/kg of lead. The parameters observed included biomass (mg), lead content in the root, stem, and leaf, bioaccumulation factor, translocation factor, metal tolerance index, and amount of metal extraction, which were analyzed after 30, 60, and 90 days. The results revealed that root, stem and leaf biomass (g) were significantly different from control (T0). The lead contents were root<stem <leaf, while the translocation factor value was more than one, except for lead exposure 375 mg/kg (T2) in the second month and 250 mg/kg lead (T1) in the third month. The bioaccumulation factor for all treatments was less than one, and the metal tolerance index ranged from 90.87% - 93.07%. Besides, the amount of root metal extraction was smaller than the shoot. In sum, C. fruticosa is potential phytoremediation.

Abstract

The purpose of the study was to know the relationship of population density with DHF cases and determine the fluctuation in dengue fever cases in the Hulu Sungai Selatan Regency in 2008-2014. The population in this study was all DHF cases had recorded by the Public Health Office of Hulu Sungai Selatan Regency in 2014-2018, obtained from DHF cases data and population density data. The data were analyzed using spatial analysis with ArcGIS and linear correlation analysis. The results showed the highest average DHF cases is in Kandangan Subdistrict with 471 cases in 2014-2018. The study showed the relation betweenDHF cases with population density was DHF cases (r) is 0.891, while the Sig. (2-tailed) < 0.05, so the incidence of DHF cases is significant. Spatial analysis showed that the highest DHF cases happened in the area with a high population density. The use of Geographic Information Systems is expected to facilitate government in reduce cases of DHF in Hulu Sungai Selatan Regency. The preventions that can be made are eradication of mosquito nests, periodic larvae checks, and health education so that dengue fever cases can decrease especially in densely populated areas and special education for DHF in schools. This research also can be used as a reference for better regular preventive counseling models by health workers in communities such as government agencies, regional residents and schools.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to determine the effect of the 5E Inquiry Learning Model as compared to the conventional method in enhancing third-grade students’ science achievement using “magnet” as the learning material. A quasi-experimental pretest-posttest control group design was employed with the participation of 40 students from two intact Third-grade classes in a primary school in Kuala Kangsar. The experimental group was taught using the 5E Inquiry Learning Model which consists of 5 stages, namely Engagement, Exploration, Explanation, Expansion, & Evaluation, while the control group was taught using the teacher-centered conventional method. The science achievement in the learning of “Magnet” was measured using a researcher-developed test consisting of 12 multiple-choice and 8 fill-in-the-blank items. The test has sufficient validity and KR-20 reliability. Analysis of the pretest data indicates that there was no statistically significant difference (t = 1.66, p > .05) in the pretest means between the experimental and control groups. Accordingly, an independent samples t-test was used to compare students’ achievement in the posttest. The analysis of the posttest data indicates that the posttest mean in science achievement (16.05) among the group of students who had followed through the 5E Inquiry Learning Model is statistically significantly higher (t = 4.75, p < .001) than the corresponding mean (13.15) among the group of students in the control group. Therefore, it can be concluded that the 5E Inquiry Learning Model enhances the learning of science in terms of achievement among the primary students.

Abstract

Nature of Science (NOS) is a common topic in science education nowadays. However, the fact of the nature of science is not consensus through documents. The assessment of views of nature of science, therefore, was facing multi issues. Especially, in assessing views of NOS in a new context other than from where a validated tool was developed. Researchers and educators should notice certain issues relating to NOS. This paper will provide and discuss how to develop a more appropriate NOS tool to best use for Vietnamese Physics student teachers based on some previously validated tools and the empirical data from the research on the context. Instead of using a provided tool robotically, the paper calls for more critical employment of the tool based on the consideration of social and cultural context. This is not only important in the case of Vietnam but also any new circumstance.

Abstract

The detections of gravitational waves, which culminated in the 2017 physics Noble Prize award have again confirmed the triumph of the theory of general relativity. This theory, together with quantum mechanics, forms the backbones of our modern understanding of the world and significantly contributes to modern technologies we are using today. Despite the importance of these theories, they are still rarely part of high school physics curricula worldwide, including the Indonesian physics curriculum, due to assumptions that these theories are too difficult for students to grasp. However, there has been a growing interest to bring these theories to younger students and general public and there is growing evidence that appropriate teaching can result in measurable learning. The purpose of this research was to explore the impact of activity-based learning using models and analogies on high school students’ conceptual understanding of general relativity related concepts. It was conducted in one class of 31 students who participated in a three-week period program. Testing of their conceptual understanding used identical pre/post-tests. The results indicated a strong and statistically significant improvement in students’ conceptual understanding with a large effect size. Interestingly, the results showed that the change in conceptual understanding to physics of girls was higher than boys.

Abstract

This study aims to enhance critical thinking skill through science context-based inquiry learning (SCOIL). This study is a quasi-experimental research with pretest and posttest control group design. The SCOIL was carried out in seventh-grade junior high school in Bogor with 56 students consisted of 24 boys and 36 girls. Data were collected by giving out critical thinking skill tests, observing the teaching and learning process, and students’ activities. Those data were analyzed descriptively and inferentially. Syntax of SCOIL was namely observation, investigation, representation, conclusions, and communication. The result of the SCOIL model implementation showed increased activity with high category and N-gain critical thinking skill was categorized at the medium level. The significance test showed the critical thinking skills of students with the SCOIL model are greater than the guided inquiry learning model. It can be concluded that the SCOIL model can enhance the critical thinking skills of junior high school students.
