Abstract

Elementary school students’ achievement in natural science in the academic year of 2015/2016 at Cluster V, Buleleng regency, Bali province was considerably low. An early observation also revealed low motivation, negative attitudes towards teachers, low self-esteem and low confidence in self-capability. Therefore, a breakthrough approach was urgently required to improve the students' performance in natural science learning. The current article aimed at investigating the effects of the (Nature of Science) NOS-oriented cooperative learning model with the Numbered Head Together (NHT) on the elementary school students’ achievement in natural science. The study was a quasi-experimental research adopting the post-test only control group design. The research conducted in elementary schools in Cluster V Buleleng sub-district, Buleleng regency, Bali, Indonesia. The research subject was 137 students in Grade 5 consisting of six classes from  5 elementary schools. The hypothesis was examined using an inferential statistics, the t-test. The results showed that there was a significant difference in the learning results of natural science between the students taught with the NOS-oriented cooperative learning model with the NHT type and those with the conventional learning model (t count = 7,048 t table = 2,000). The students taught with the NOS-oriented constructive learning model with the NHT type achieved better than those with the conventional learning model. Therefore, it concluded that the NOS-oriented cooperative learning model with the NHT type gave positive effects on the fifth year students’ achievement in natural science learning.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of Brain-Based Teaching with i-Think Maps and the Brain Gym Approach (BBT-iTBA) compared to the conventional teaching approach (CTA) towards Physics’ conceptual understanding amongst male and female matriculation students in the north of Peninsular Malaysia. 180 students (83 were male and 97 were female), aged around 19 years old, from two Matriculation Colleges, were involved as research sample for the targeted population. The effects of the BBT-iTBA compared to the CTA towards Physics’ conceptual understanding amongst students were determined using a quasi-experimental non-equivalent group design, involving an experimental group of students (exposed to BBT-iTBA) and a control group of students (received CTA). Data gathered from the Physics Conceptual Understanding Test (PCUT), administered on the sample before and after the intervention of both teaching approaches, were then analyzed statistically. The two way ANOVA analysis results indicated that after the intervention, students’ Physics conceptual understanding differ significantly due to the implementation of the different teaching approaches, with a great size effect. Students who were exposed to BBT-iTBA performed significantly better in the PCUT than students who received CTA. Although gender alone did not affect students’ Physics conceptual understanding, the results obtained revealed that the effects of the interaction between the implementation of the teaching approaches and gender on the attainment of students’ Physics conceptual understanding were significant, with a simple size effect. The main features of the BBT-iTBA, which are: focusing on the optimum function of the brain; promoting and enhancing the skills of thinking; and creating a relaxed and fun learning environment; are found to be the significant triggers for students to better understand Physics conceptually and excel in the subject.

Abstract

This study aims to develop the Environmental Learning Model (ELM) by using documentary videos to improve knowledge of coastal residents of Palopo City about mangrove, wastewater, domestic waste, and liveable house. There were two phases used in this research. The first phase examined the concept of the lesson plan, guidedbook, video material, evaluation tests, and answer sheets that were validated by the experts. In the second phase, two reviewers examined the practicality and the effectivity of the learning implementation. The validity result of the guided-book was in very valid category. The lesson plan was in very valid category, and the video material was also in the very valid category. This validation was carried out by educational expert and multimedia expert. Practicality: Two educational reviewers stated the syntax, social system, reactional principle, support system were implemented entirely. Effectivity: The learning result of environmental knowledge in the first trial was in the Medium category (47,5). And in the second trial, it improved to the High category (60,8).So, it can be stated that the development of learning model through documentary videos is valid, practical, and effective to be used in improving environmental knowledge for the coastal resident to avoid bad behaviour.

Abstract

The result of observation at Science Laboratory of State Vocational High School 3 of Surakarta shows that the power capacity of power bank fitted with recycled laptop batteries was not tested. Power bank test was conducted by preparing used laptop batteries type 18650 from its packaging for a total of five cells, selecting batteries based on their physical appearance, cleaning the pole connections, testing the voltage, testing temperature when power charging from electric outlet to power bank, testing the power drain, testing the power capacity without load, charging in the case, testing the module when power charging from electric outlet to power bank, testing the power capacity level indicator, testing power charging from power bank to recharged device, installing the power bank analyzer, and recording voltage measurement results, electric current flowing, duration of time needed to charge, and power capacity left after charging. The electric load used was a 1.2 watt LED lamp. After that, the calculation of battery power capacity was conducted, in accordance with the technical specification listed in the power, then compared to the result of test of power capacity stored in recycled power bank. Based on the result of technical specification calculation, the power bank produced had a power capacity of 50.000 watt hours. Meanwhile, in the experiment with LED lamp electric load, the power bank had a power capacity of 44.6756 watt hours. The comparison of power capacity between the technical specification and the experiment shows that the recycled power bank had performance of 89.4%. Thus, recycled power bank met the requirement of feasibility to be learning media of physics project.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the pattern of a more effective learning approach between the inductive and deductive approach in improving students’ conceptual understanding referring to the international standard curriculum on the X graders for the material property particulate subject matter. Through the deductive approach, students already have a picture/concept in their minds. But by using an inductive approach, students use their logic to understand concepts and summarize it. The research method applied in this study is a descriptive-comparative method with a triangulation analysis technique. Instruments used in the study were a questionnaire for the students, observation sheets, and three-tier diagnostic test items for pretest and posttest. The average pretest scores for deductive and inductive classes were 54.70 and 48.25, respectively. The result of the observation sheet analysis showed the deductive approach surpassed 12 points more than the inductive approach in improving the student’s learning activity. The result of the questionnaire analysis showed that 38 of 68 students prefer the learning process using deductive to inductive approach, and thought that it was suitable with the students’ characteristics. While the average posttest scores for deductive and inductive classes were 68.16 and 55.47, respectively. The analysis result of the N-Gain test towards the pretest and posttest results regarding the three-tier diagnostic test items indicated achievement of student’s conceptual understanding using a deductive approach which was 14.2225% higher than the use of the inductive approach. The Triangulation Analysis stated that the deductive approach was more effective in improving students’ conceptual understanding of Chemistry and material topics as well as material classification. While the inductive approach was more effectively applied to the topic of Particle Kinetic theory.
