This article offers an overview of the conversation analysis (CA) method and its theoretical and practical applications for qualitative social scientific research. The article also discusses the methods analytical contributions and methodological applications based on the grammar of casual conversation offered by Eggins and Slade (1997). For illustration, analyses of data fragments are presented, using English language from telephone conversation recorded from one of radio programs. The recorded conversation was taken from the English Program at RCT FM radio on Sunday. The analyses try to describe and explain how language enables us to initiate and sustain casual talk. The article highlights CAs unique insights into the way social processes, relations, and identities are constructed and experienced at the level of everyday interaction, and draws attention to some of the ways in which the method can be of benefit to social scientists from a variety of disciplines. Abstract is an important part of scientific work for both seminar presentationÃÂ and journal publication in national or international level.ÃÂ Every writer is obliged to write an abstract for his/her publication.ÃÂ The aim of this study was to examine a number of abstracts in English scientific papers by non-native speakers (Indonesian lecturers).ÃÂ The study was focused on the linguistic and organizational features (i.e. tense shift and rhetorical function). The research results show that a number of abstracts in the data do not conform to the principles of abstract writing, that is some abstracts do not contain complete moves. In addition, the rhetorical shift is not always followed by the tense shift. ÃÂ Key words: abstract, tense shift, rhetorical function, move analysis

This writing aims to reveal that behind womenââ¬â¢s weakness and tenderness there is an invisible power that can overturn menââ¬â¢s domination. While care seems more effective to get womenââ¬â¢s love and respect, men tend to rely on domination. This, in fact, does not always work. Semiotic is a kind of analysis used to uncover the meaning of signs in a text. In literature this analysis serves to show different types of meaning. In this novel, there is a couple - Jerome and Monica, and their friend - Stanislas. Jerome dominates and excels in everything. He spends time hunting wild animals and doing manââ¬â¢s other sports. Monica is a housewife who is thirsty of her husbandââ¬â¢s attention. She makes an affair with Stanislas, her husbandââ¬â¢s friend. One day Jerome takes Monica, Stanislas and another woman to deer-hunting. Later he finds out that there is something between her wife and Stanislas. Driven by jealousy, he decides to kill them both. The writer used semiotic analysis because there are many signs of syntagmatic and paradigmatic meanings to discover. Key words: sémiotique, littérature

Peopleââ¬â¢s behaviours and roles are guided by prevalent norms and regulations so influential that their particular characteristics might be seen by others as distinctively belong to certain groups of societies. Easterners and Westerners might be seen as having distinctive features regarding politeness in human relation. Eastern societies organize themselves primarily according to behaviours showing polite treatment for the sake of moral sanction and socio-cultural harmony. This probably explains easterners preference for a communal life. As with Western societies, they tend to esteem positive politeness related to intimacy and negative politeness related to individual freedom that is attached to their preference for individualism. Eastern societies and Western societies perform distinctive politeness strategies having their own reasons and tendencies as bounded by pragmatic backgrounds of their existence. Pragmatic aspects include language use of various societies, the direct and indirect utterances, explicature and implicature, politeness strategies and many more. International communication calls for world attention toward respecting these distinctive features of various cultural backgrounds. And the direct realization of this cultural pragmatic communication is looking at and doing communication pragmatically. àKey words: politeness strategies, positive politeness, negative politeness, cultural pragmatic communication POLITENESS IN COMMUNITY PRACTICE

One of the ways to improve the quality of education in Indonesia is by initiating the program called Rintisan Sekolah Bertaraf Internasional (Pilot International Standard School-ISS). This program provides grants to selected schools to implement the teaching and learning process to comply with the international standards as in the developed countries. Some subjects, including Mathematics and Sciences are taught by using English as a medium of instruction in the classroom. Textbooks for these subjects have been prepared in both Indonesian and English. However, the teachers are not yet ready to conduct the teaching and learning activities in English, so there seems to be some problems in the classroom due to the lack of English proficiency among the teachers. With respect to this issue, the school can adopt Content-Based Instruction in which the students would learn the language as a by-product of learning about real-world and encourage the collaboration between subject matter teachers and English language teachers.
