Abstract

The purpose of this research is to examine the relationship between self-directed learning, motivation to learn, and learning organization at one public university in Malaysia. Ninety two academic staff were selected through stratified random sampling by post of Professor, Associate Professor, Senior Lecturer, and Lecturer. Three research objectives frame the research: (1) to determine the level of learning organization, self-directed learning, and motivation to learn among lecturers; (2) to determine the relationship between self-directed learning, motivation to learn, and learning organization among lecturers; and (3) to determine the contribution of self-directed learning and motivation to learn on learning organization among lecturers. Descriptive analysis was used to determine the level of self-directed learning, motivation to learn, and learning organization. Pearson Product Moment Correlation’s test was used to determine the relationship between self-directed learning, motivation to learn, and learning organization. Regression analysis was used to determine the contribution of elements of self-directed learning and motivation to learn on organizational learning. Based on the findings of the study, recommendations and policy implications are discussed and directions for future research are provided.

Abstract

The Law Number 12 of 2012 concerning Higher Education (UUPT) stipulates that all State-Owned Legal Entity Universities (PT-BHMN) to be changed into Legal Entity State University (PTN-BH). The change provides opportunities to seven PT-BHMNs to design new statutes. The model of PTN-BH is similar to PT-BHMN, except that PTN BH’s financial system must follow the regulations set by Public Service Body (BLU). Basically, it is a strategic policy, although complex problems often arise in its implementation. With its PT-PKBLU status, UPI has not yet met the criteria of self-directing, self-motivating, self-regulating, self-supporting, self-assessing, and self-decision making in order to respond to challenging situations, as the regulation is rigid and set forth by government. The problem lies in how to put UPI in its role and position as PT-PKBLU effectively and efficiently while also being accountable and competitive. This is not easy. It takes a paradigm change and unconventional managerial strategy. Today, the number of private universities is increasing and each of them offers advantages. UPI must always be ready to compete with other universities, both private and state universities. However, compared to other state-owned universities, UPI is still left behind. Therefore, this research will focus on UPI’s competitiveness. To find out how UPI can improve its competitiveness to be a research-based teaching university, the writer is going to focus on a value creation model, excellent services, and UPI’s image which influence the improvement and enhancement of competitiveness. The units of analysis of the research were graduate students from 40 departments at UPI. To fid out the influence of each proposed indicator, the research employed SEM analysis, in which each variable was tested by a measurement model. The results show that a value creation model, superior services, institution’s image, and UPI’s competitiveness can lead UPI to be a research-based teaching university.

Abstract

This study was intended to investigate the development of students’ mathematical logical thinking ability and self-regulated learning through Problem-based Learning (PBL). This study was a part of a master thesis and a sub-study of a Postgraduate Research Grant from DGHE in2013. This study was a pre-test-post-test quasi-experimental control group design involving 93 eleventh-grade students of a senior high school in Karawang which were chosen puposively. The instruments of this study were an essay test on mathematical logical thinking, a self-regulated learning scale, and a scale measuring students’ perception of PBL. The study revealed that students getting treatment on PBL attained better grades on mathematical logical thinking ability than students taught by conventional teaching, athough the grades were at low level. However, there was no difference in the grades for self-regulated learning between students in the two groups, although the grades were fairly good. Also, there was no correlation between mathematical logical thinking ability and self-regulated learning with students’ positive opinions toward PBL.

Abstract

This sudy was intended to examine the role of prior mathematics ability (PMA) and contextual teaching approach with mathematical manipulative (CTL-MM) to the achievement of mathematical connection ability (MCA) and self-confidence (SC) of junior high school students. This study was part of a master thesis, and it was a sub-study of a Postgraduate Research Grant from DGHE in 2013 as well. The study was quasi-experimental with pre-test post-test control group design, involving 67 ninth-grade students from a junior high school in Bandung. The instruments of this study were an essay test on mathematical connection, a self-confidence scale, and a scale on students’ perception toward CTL-MM. The result of the study revealed that CTL-MM was better in improving students’ MCA, N-Gain of MCA, and SC. This was shown by students’ grades of MCA and SC which were better in the group taught by CTL-MM than students’ grades in the group taught by conventional teaching. While their grades of SC were better, the grades of MCTA were at low level. However, there was a moderate correlation between mathematical connection and self-confidence though students demonstrated positive perception toward the  implementation of CTL-MM.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to share information about the necessity of multicultural education in Indonesia through online teaching held at National Dong Hwa University, Taiwan, and Indonesia University of Education, Indonesia. As multicultural education will help studentscreate equal educational opportunities from diverse racial, ethnic, social-class, and cultural groups, one of its important goals is to help all students acquire the knowledge, attitudes, and skills needed to function effectively in a pluralistic democratic society and to interact, negotiate, and communicate with people from diverse groups in order to create a civic and moral community that works for the common good. This study has implemented “Dick, Carey  Carey model” through online teaching approach. This research involved one male and fourteen female of fourth semester undergraduate students majoring in Early Childhood Teacher Education at Indonesia University of Education. The results may not be generalized to other teaching institutions due to the limited number of the participants. This research was conducted in the Department of Curriculum Design and Human Potentials, National Dong Hwa University, Taiwan and in the Department of Early Childhood Teacher Education, Faculty of Education, Indonesia University of Education. The distance between Taiwan and Indonesia, limitation of the media, tools and internet connection did not affect the learning process as long as the teacher prepared the needed materials. Online teaching could achieve good improvement, similar to traditional teaching using “face-to-face” situation. By using Dick, Carey Carey’s instructional system design, students were able to enhance their understanding about this theme of learning. This condition showed the increase of students’ performance mean scores from 5.142 to 8.928 with four students able to get posttest scores 100% correct, seven students 90% correct, two students 80% correct, and only one student 60% correct. According to the percentage of the average score of posttest, the teaching activity by using this approach has succeeded to improve the students’ understanding about multicultural education. In addition, the percentage of each item has increased as well. The comparison between pre- and post-test has shown that the lowest score on pretest was 2.0 and the highest one was 7.0. The result has dramatically increased on the posttest scores with the lowest score 6.0 and the highest score 10. The rising scores ranged between 2-6 scores with an average of 3.785 point. Consequently, the online teaching by adopting Dick, Carey Carey’s ISD model has improved student’s learning performance.

Abstract

In Indonesia, language endangerment is primarily related to language shift. Data show that the most important symptoms of language shift and of the vitality of a language are number and quality of the domains in which it is used and transmitted. The second crucial symptom of language endangerment is the loss of transmission from one generation to the next. This is what is now being seen in many communities across Indonesia where children are no longer acquiring their parents’ language. There are two general endangerment scenarios that have occurred in Indonesia. The first is the immigration scenario in which members of another speech community from outside the area move in and due to economic and political advantage essentially ‘take over’ a local speech community, imposing their own language. The second is the emigration scenario in which members of a local speech community temporarily migrate outside of the community for education or work, and on returning bring the dominant language from outside into the community. Finally, we can now find in many parts of Indonesia that social changes including economic, educational, and political contexts, promote a shift from local to dominant language.

Abstract

Ensuring staff display best practices when handling children at childcare center is a task that requires the management to instil knowledge of child development and develop the skills for maintaining childcare. This paper unfolds the initiative of a childcare manager who believes in the necessity of conducting research about staff skills and level of knowledge to ensure the quality of childcare service. Therefore, a case study was conducted to identify the key areas of a quality childcare centre: staff relationships with children and peers, partnerships with families, programming and evaluation, children’s experiences and learning, protective care and safety, health, nutrition and well-being, and management to support quality. The questionnaire was adapted from the Quality Improvement Accreditation System (QIAS) model and administered to all staffs at the center. This research discovers three areas in which each of them (1) reflect staffs' ability to implement new knowledge; (2) need further training and guidance; and (3) need urgent consistent training and monitoring. Furthermore, this study also presents discussion between the researcher and the manager to enhance staff development.
