Abstract

This study aims to investigate the use of interactional modifications proposed by Long (1982) by two English teachers and language learning opportunities obtained. The study found out the distribution and the form of interactional modification in two different levels of English proficiency, elementary and pre-intermediate. To answer the research questions, case study was adopted. The main data were six transcribed classroom interactions of six sessions with audio-video recording. From the analysis, it was found that elementary teacher modified more interactions compared to pre-intermediate teacher due to less capability of lower student to comprehend the information delivered. The form of interactional modification used was other-repetition strategy, where both of the teachers repeated student`s utterances frequently in order to clarify, confirm, or emphasize the initial utterances. Besides, the occurrences of interactional modifications were considered to be determined by several factors, such as student`s level of proficiency, material delivered, and teacher`s knowledge. As for the question of language learning opportunities, the findings revealed by modifying the interactions there were gap noticing where the teacher noticed the mistakes of student`s language used by bringing that gap into awareness. Besides, modified interactions also gave the student the chance for meaning negotiation where the understanding of information was obtained through resolving the communication breakdown in the classroom. Therefore, it is paramount for teachers to acknowledge, believe, and aware that modified interaction is important not only to provide comprehensible input but also to make student comprehend the information and are triggered to be able to participate in the conversations.

The data analysis was done by examining social purposes, schematic structures and linguistics features (mainly Transitivity system). The findings showed that in terms of social purpose, three out of four descriptive texts met the purpose of descriptive text. In terms of schematic structure, one text met the criteria as descriptive text included personal comment; two texts met the criteria of descriptive text but did not include personal comment; and the last one did not meet the criteria of descriptive text. Moreover, in terms of linguistic features, only two of four descriptive texts had closely followed the linguistic features of descriptive text. However, it can be concluded that some descriptive texts in the textbook entitled “Bahasa Inggris for Senior High School Grade X” were unsatisfactory in which they were not satisfy the criteria of descriptive text.

Abstract

The research investigated the use of video to improve students’ speaking ability in reporting procedural text to seven-graders of a junior high school in Bandung. A Quasi-experimental design was used in the research with pre-test-post-test non-equivalent group design. The experimental and control groups consisted of 25 students. Data collection was conducted by collecting students’ speaking on both pre-test and post-test and a set of questionnaire to experimental class. The data were analyzed using several tests in SPSS 20. The findings of the test and questionnaire showed that video was effective in improving students’ speaking scores. This condition was proven by statistical computation of independent t-test on post test scores in which tobt is higher than tcrit  ( 2.702 2.011 ).  This shows that video as media was considered effective to improve students’ speaking skills, particularly in speaking procedural texts. Finally, the findings from the questionnaire showed that most students gave positive responses toward this method. The students gained some benefits from this method such as helping them to improve language skills, creating an active and fun class, motivating them to participate in learning activities.
