Abstract

Concern has been expressed that many commencing undergraduate mathematics students have mastered skills without conceptual understanding. A pilot study carried out at a leading Australian university indicates that a significant number of students, with high tertiary entrance ranks, have very limited understanding of the concept of function, despite the emphasis it receives in the secondary mathematics curriculum. Whilst most students were familiar with families of functions, many were unable to give an appropriate definition or recognize whether a given graph or rule represents a function; and could not make correct connections between function graphs and tables of values.Keywords: Algebra, Functions, Secondary School Mathematics, Undergraduate Mathematics

Abstract

Whilst the technological, pedagogical and content knowledge (TPACK) model has been increasingly adopted for understanding teachers’ use of technology, there have been many calls for greater discussion about the constituent constructs, their relationship with one another and the central TPACK. This paper analyses qualitatively the TPACK demonstrated by the teacher of a Year 11class who used web-based simulated contexts and interactive web objects in a Mathematics Studies course. The findings indicate aspects of TPK relating to academic learning time and the transformational mode of the technology were not fully realised in this case study. Abstract

In this study, we aimed at demonstrating the power of Variation Theory in exploring the local situation of Indonesian teachers and Teacher Professional Development program. The projection of Variation theory regarding the enterprise of teaching results on the need of sensitivity of students and exemplary teaching strategy that differ with teachers teaching style. Besides, It requires more opportunities for teachers to understand the critical feature of object of learning. Abstract

Attention to integrate technology in teaching and learning has provided a major transformation in the landscape of education. Therefore, many innovations in teaching and learning have been technology-driven. The study attempted to examine what is engineering students’ perception regarding the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in mathematics learning as well as investigate their opinion about how ICT can be integrated to improve teaching and learning processes. The subjects were Iranian engineering students from two universities. The finding showed they are fully aware of importance of ICT in teaching and learning mathematics. Whilst, they were feeling comfortable and confident with technology, they do not have more experience of using technology in mathematics classes before. Abstract

The aim of this study is to create understanding profiles of elementary school teachers who have been and have not been following the workshop PMRI, before and after they learned the learning resource about philosophy, principles, and characteristics of realistic mathematics approach. This type of research used in this study is a combination of qualitative research and developmental research. The results shown in this paper is the understanding profile of onesubject who is an elementary school teacher. Abstract

We propose learning Matematika GASING to help students better understand the addition material. Matematika GASING is a way of learning mathematics in an easy, fun and enjoyable fashion. GASING is short for GAmpang, aSyIk, and menyenaNGkan (Bahasa Indonesia for easy, fun and enjoyable). It was originally developed by Prof. Yohanes Surya at the Surya Institute in Indonesia to improve the mathematics education in Indonesia. In Matematika GASING, there is a step called “the critical point” that needs to be mastered for each topic. The focus of our research is the critical point for addition, that is addition of two numbers between 1 − 10 with a sum less than 20. The subject is a matriculation class at STKIP Surya and the research method used is Classroom Action Research. Abstract

The main focus of this design research was on students’ mathematical thinking and skills and on their understanding of mathematical concepts and methods. The mathematical content our project starts with is the introduction of integers. For this content new learning environments have been developed, implemented and evaluated. An important question for the design of teaching and learning activities is how to establish appropriate models of mathematical concepts and methods for students and how they operate in students’ minds. In the lecture the use of those methodological concepts and theories in our approach will be explained and justified. Abstract

The purpose of this research is to know how Naive Geometry method can support students' understanding about the concept of solving quadratic equations. In this article we will discuss one activities of the four activities we developed. This activity focused on how students linking the Naive Geometry method with the solving of the quadratic equation especially on how student bring geometric solution into algebraic form. This research was conducted in SMP Negeri 1 Palembang. Design research was chosen as method used in this research that have three main phases. The results of this research showed that manipulating and reshaping the rectangle into square could stimulate students to acquire the idea of solving quadratic equations using completing perfect square method. In the end of the meeting, students are also guided to reinvent the general formula to solve quadratic equations.Keywords: Quadratic Equations, Design Research, Naive Geometry, PMRI
