Abstract

Title : The Study of Aspergilus flavus  and Aflatoxin in Peanut Culture on Selected Dry-Land Fields at Karanganyar District. The study was aimed at: 1) Obtaining the data of Aspergilus flavus and Aflatoxin existence in soil and peanut pod of selected dry-land fields at Karanganyar district; 2) Observing the correlation between soil characteristics and the existence of Aspergilus flavus and Aflatoxin. This research was a comparative descriptive experiment, which was conducted from May to November, 2008. The method was by surveying five sub-districts of dry-land fields included: 1) Tasikmadu; 2) Karanganyar; 3) Mojogedang; 4) Jumantono, and 5) Jaten. The observation parameters were consisted of main variables (A. flavus in soil, A. flavus in peanut pod and aflatoxin in peanut pod) and sub-main variables (pH, organic C, total N, soil moisture content and peanut pod’s moisture content). The mean test was then employed to process the obtained data after the laboratory analysis, followed with correlation test to determine the interaction between main and sub-main variables. The results showed that all the selected locations were infected with A. flavus, with the highest population in soil was in the Jaten sub-district (143 cfu.g-1 soil) and the highest population in peanut pod was in the Jumantono sub-district (50.67 cfu.g-1 pod). None of the peanut pods were infected with aflatoxin. Total N, carbon C, pH and soil moisture influenced the existence of A. flavus in soil and peanut pod. Abstract

Title : The Uptake and Tolerance of Azolla to Chromium on Vertisols and Entisols at Various Water Levels. This research aims to study the effect of water level, soil kind, chromium concentration (Cr), and their interactions on uptake and tolerance of azolla to Cr. The research was done in March to May 2009 in the green house of Faculty of Agriculture, Sebelas Maret University, Surakarta. The research used completely randomized design (CRD) factorial with three treatment factors, they were: soil kind (Vertisols of Jatikuwung and Entisols Colomadu, Karanganyar), water levels (0; 2; and 7 cm) and Cr concentrations (0; 5; 10; 15; and 20 ppm). There were 191 g of Vertisols and 200 g of Entisols pass to 2 mm sieve put into plastic pot and watering at various levels according to the treatments. A gram of fresh azolla was spread on each pot and incubated for three weeks. Each treatment combinations were replicated three times. Sampling was taken at 1, 2, and 3 weeks after planting for azolla biomass, Cr uptake of azolla, available Cr, and Cr toxicities symptoms of azolla. The data analyzed statistically by Kruskal Wallis test at 95% level significant, followed with Mood Median test. The result shows that soil kind has no significant effect, while water level, Cr concentration, and treatment interaction contribute highly significant influence on uptake and tolerance of azolla to Cr. The highest uptake of Cr at the Vertisols was taken at 7 cm water level and 15 ppm Cr concentration, while at the Entisols was in 2 cm of water level and 15 ppm Cr concentration. Azolla most tolerance to Cr at treatment combination of 2 cm water level and 10 ppm Cr concentration in Vertisols, and at 2 cm water level and 5 ppm Cr concentration at Entisols. Keywords: A. mycrophylla, chromium, Cr uptake and tolerance, water level

Abstract

Title : Using Tea Extract and Vermicompost on Caisim (Brassica juncea L.) Cultivation. The aim of the research is to know the effect of tea extract and vermicompost on yield and growth of caisim (Brassica juncea L.). The research was conducted in February-March 2009 in Screen House in Agriculture Faculty Sebelas Maret University at 96 meter above sea level. The research was arranged on factorial design based on Complete Randomize Design. The treatment of the research was tea extract with concentration 0, 10, 20, and 30 g/L and dosage vermicompost 0, 4, 8 and 12 ton/acre (equal 0, 10, 20 and 30 g/crop). Each treatment was repeated 3 times, and each of them restating 2 crop unit. Data was analysized by analysis of variants with test of 0.05, if there was significant continued with test of Duncan 0.05. Research variable were plant height, leaf number, fresh and shoot biomass weight, fresh and biomass root weight, root volume, chlorophyll content, leaf area and root shoot ratio. Result of research show there is interaction between tea extract and vermicompost on shoot root ratio. Shoot root ratio increase by increasing tea extract concentration on caisim without vermicompost and with vermicompost 8 ton/acre. Application tea extract do not give significantly effect on growth and yield of caisim. Dose vermicompost 8 ton/acre gave the highest of average fresh weight and leaf number. Keywords: caisim, tea extract, vermicompost
