Abstract

There are many real world applications of face recognition which require good performance in uncontrolled environments such as social networking, and environment surveillance. However, many researches of face recognition are done in controlled situations. Compared to the controlled environments, face recognition in uncontrolled environments comprise more variation, for example in the pose, light intensity, and expression. Therefore, face recognition in uncontrolled conditions is more challenging than in controlled settings. In thisresearch, we would like to discuss handling pose variations in face recognition. We address the representation issue us ing multi-pose of face detection based on yaw angle movement of the head as extensions of the existing frontal face recognition by using Principal Component Analysis (PCA). Then, the matching issue is solved by using Euclidean distance. This combination is known as Eigenfaces method. The experiment is done with different yaw angles and different threshold values to get the optimal results. The experimental results show that: (i) the more pose variation of face images used as training data is, the better recognition results are, but it also increases the processing time, and (ii) the lower threshold value is, the harder it recognizes a face image, but it also increases the accuracy.

Abstract

The automatic interpretation of Pap Smear image is one of challenging issues in some aspects. Accurate segmentation for each cell is an important procedurethat must be done so that no information is lost during the evaluation process. However, the presence of overlapping cells in Pap Smear image make the automated analysis of these cytology images become more difficult. In most ofthe studies, cytoplasm segmentation is the difficult stage because the boundaries between cells are very thin. In this study, we propose an algorithm that can segment the overlapping cytoplasm. First, the morphology operation and global thresholding to segment cytoplasm is done. Second, the overlapping area on cytoplasm region is separated using morphological operation and distance criteria on each pixel. The proposed method has been evaluated against the results of manual tracing by experts. The experiment results show that the proposed method can segment the overlapping cytoplasm as similar as experts do, i.e., 2:897 3:632 (mean std) using Hausdorff distance.

Abstract

Advances in science and technology, especially Information and Communication Technology (ICT), has great impacts on the present education management. It allows the development of the e-learning system to facilitate the teaching and learning processes. As a result, many modern universities have developed and utilized the system. For that reason, there is a great need to develop an instrument in which the elearning management system can be evaluated from various aspects such as the system performance, user acceptance, and utilization. The level of the user acceptance is the central focus of this study, known to be strongly related to the level of utilization, and is widely studied by using the famous framework of Davis’ Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). The framework is also adopted in the current study and the required data to analyze quantitatively the model are selectively obtained from a sample of 73 respondents. The validity and reliability of the data are evaluated by using the Rasch model. The results suggest that the all 16 items in the questionnaire are valid and reliable to measure the acceptance of thee-learning system.

Abstract

Emotional advertising on the Internet such as websites and social media can be highly beneficial for Small Medium Enterprises (SMEs). However, not all ofSMEs have a website that meets all of the principles of website design which are persuasive. Moreover, the color is rarely considered in making websites to raise the emotional bonding between the products and audiences of SMEs. Literature review, observation to four websites as case studies, and questionnaires distributed to respondents randomly were performed. This research aimedto evaluate the extent to which SMEs from Bandung exploited the use of color as an element in the web User Interface (UI) design and to analyze whether thecolor could provide emotional bonding, so the visitors were interested in purchase or trial of the product. This research finds that participants responses to color are various in different demographic factors. Zananachips.com is considered to successfully utilize the color in the web UI design to build its brand identity, raise interest in the trial of the product, and engage the consumer with the website. This research is expected to be a reference forSMEs in creating emotion, motivation, and persuasion through website design.

Abstract

Boolean Retrieval (BR) and Vector Space Model (VSM) are very popular methods in information retrieval for creating an inverted index and querying terms. BR method searches the exact results of the textual information retrieval without ranking the results. VSM method searches and ranks the results. This study empirically compares the two methods. The research utilizes a sample of the corpus data obtained from Reuters. The experimental results show that the required times to produce an inverted index by the two methods are nearly the same. However, a difference exists on the querying index. The results also show that the numberof generated indexes, the sizes of the generated files, and the duration of reading and searching an index are proportional with the file number in the corpus and thefile size.

Abstract

This paper discusses the user acceptance of a mandatory government-regulated information system. The issue is investigated by using a modified UTAUTframework. From random sample data of 65 respondents, a regression model is established from which the conclusion is drawn. The study concludes that theaspects of performance expectancy, effort expectancy, social influence, and information system quality affect the user acceptance. The four aspects are equally important.
