Abstract

Modern electrical motors are available in many different forms with different mounting arrangements. To ensure a long life for the motor it is important to select it with correct degree of protection when operating under heavy duty conditions in a severe environment. Smooth starting is also one of major considerations to get long life and optimum efficiency. The conventional method to start an asynchronous motor with a soft starter is by reducing the voltage of the motor by varying the voltage “off time”. The “off time” could for example be controlled to achieve a desired maximum current level or a constant driving torque.  Even if the voltage is reduced the fundamental frequency of the voltage is equal to the supply voltage frequency. That gives a large difference between angular speed of supply voltage and angular speed of the rotor during start. Due to the large difference in angular speed the motor flux will be low and thereby also the ability to produce torque. Instead of using the conventional control method with a reduced voltage it is possible to use a method with controlled flux similar to frequency inverters for soft-starters. As the soft-starter does not have the intermediate DC energy storage the applied voltage vector has to be directly modulated from the mains supply.

Abstract

The lime kiln is a very complex multivariable process with severe non linearities, high degree of coupling and frequent disturbances. In this paper a 2x2 lime kiln process with two manipulated variables namely the fuel gas flowrate, and the percent opening of the induced draft damper and two controlled variables namely front end temperature and back end temperature has been considered. After its decoupling, artificial neural network (ANN) controllers have been designed to control the front end temperature. The performance of ANN controllers have been compared with that of conventional controllers.

Abstract

This paper mainly focuses on the sizing of electrical cables (i.e.cross-sectional area) and its accomplishment in various international standards. Cable sizing methods are at variance across international standards. For example, International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), National Electrical Code (NEC), British Standard (BS) and Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). The basic philosophy underlying any cable sizing calculation is to develop a procedure model on cable sizing. The main objective of this research work is to develop effective cable sizing model for building services.

Abstract

Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage (SMES) is one of most important device attracting researchers for enhancing the transient stability of power systems. To facilitate the use of this device in different simulations and studied, a phasor model is established and used to analyse the impact of this device using matlab/Simulink software. The phasor model has enough advantages like using the SMES without need detailed model that contains the electronic power converter and therefore minimize the simulation time. The Western Systems Council Coordinating (WSCC) 3 machine-9 bus system is taken as a power system test. Simulation results show that the phasor model of SMES unit is very effective to study their impact for enhancing the transient stability in large scale time.

Abstract

One of the primary advantages of field-oriented controlled induction motor for high performance application is the capability for easy field weakening and the full utilization of voltage and current rating of the inverter to obtain a wide dynamic speed rangeThis paper describes a Model Reference Adaptive System (MRAS) based scheme using Artificial Neural Network (ANN) for online speed estimation of sensorless vector controlled induction motor drive. The proposed MRAS speed observer uses the current model as an adaptive model. The neural network has been then designed and trained online by employing a back propagation network (BPN) algorithm. The estimator was designed and simulated in Matlab/Simulink. Simulation result shows a good performance of speed estimator. The simulation results show good performance in various operating conditions. Also Performance analysis of speed estimator with the change in resistances of stator is presented. Simulation results show this estimator robust to parameter variations especially resistances of stator.

Abstract

Due to increasing concerns on environmental pollution and depleting fossil fuels, fuel cell (FC) has received considerable attention as an alternative to the conventional energy systems. Fuel cells have numerous stand-alone and grid-connected applications. This paper presents the control of the stand-alone application based on fuzzy PID (FPID) controller. The aim of the paper is to achieve the control of the fuel cell for stand-alone with suitable power conditioning unit (PCU) that consists of the two stages of DC/DC converter and DC/AC inverter. An analysis of cascade structure based on FPID controller for a single phase inverter is done and comprises two feedback control loops. The inductor current and capacitor voltage are measured and feedback to the inner loop and the outer loop, respectively. The analytical models of the h PEM fuel cells is designed and simulated by developing a detailed simulation software using Matlab, Simulink and SimPowerSystems Blockset for portable applications. The PEM fuel cell model is validated with NexaTM Power Module MAN5100078 by Ballard Power Systems at 80°C. In this paper shown that the proposed controller shows a robust behavior and good transient response.

Abstract

Inthispaper, a novel grid connected photovoltaic system is proposed which can function as an Active Power Filter (APF) with Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT). Filter reference current is derived using Fourier Transform. Considering 33% reduction in inverter switches, cost of the grid-connect photovoltaic power plant can be reduced considerably. Using this approach, it is also possible to compensate for reactive and harmonic components of the local loads; moreover it can inject generated active power into grid at maximum power point of the photovoltaic cells. According to this, during daytime, the proposed system injects active power to the grid and at the same time compensates for the reactive power of the load. When there is no sunlight, the inverter only compensates local loads. Considering cost reduction, such capabilities may result in more application of the grid connected photovoltaic systems. Main novelty of the proposed system is simultaneous APF and MPPT functioning using single DC/AC converter. In fact, extra DC-DC converter is not required in the proposed system for MPPT. In order to verify the performance of the proposed method, some simulation is done using MATLAB/Simulink software. Also, some experimental results are presented for practical verification of the proposed grid connected inverter.

Abstract

The lightning energy can be very harmfull to the wind turbine farm components. This paper attempts to evaluate the overvoltages at the sensitive points in wind farm, using ATP-EMTP package program. Four cases were performed; a) the transient voltage distribution in the insulating layer of the control line, b) the transient voltage on the control equipment, c) the coupling voltage between the tower and the control, and, d) the transient voltage distribution in the wind turbine WT generator, boast transformers and grid. These cases were performed under different lightning current conditions and at conventional design and proper design of grounding system. The results show that the ground potential rise (GPR) is reduced with using the proper design of wind turbine ground system, but the induced voltage at the control system will not affected. This work determines the optimum location of wind turbine at the areas of maximum lightning incidence. Ant colony optimization (ACO) technique is implemented to find the optimum wind farm location. This work enhances the protection strategy of the wind farms against lightning stroke.

Abstract

The increasing use of wind generation requests modifications in the electric power systems planning conception, because it includes one more uncertainty component, which needs to be studied properly and modeled. Understanding the failures rates and downtimes of wind turbines is difficult not only because of the considerable range of designs and sizes that are now in service worldwide but also since studies are conducted independently under various operating conditions in different countries. The fault tree method (FTA) has been used to study the reliability of many different power generation systems. This paper now applies that method to a wind turbine system to estimate the reliability of wind turbines. In the implementations, several types of wind turbines were considered in order to analyze the system’s reliability. The effectiveness of the proposed method is revealed through several case studies.
