Abstract

One way to know the characteristics of traditional Javanese architecture is by looking at pictorial data found in the reliefs of temple buildings. The Lara Jonggrang temple contains a symbolic meaning. In general, the type of roof on the temple reliefs is rural type. The roof construction composed of a series of components called battens, standing on beam, and rafters. Most of the houses have no walls. Wooden buildings on the reliefs show the use of the functional requirements of geography, geology, and climate. The birds are always perched on the roof of building of the reliefs with the settings under the palace and hermitage with central figures such as Rama, Shinta adding a dramatic impression. House placement with a bird perched on the roof which is always placed at the top of each relief indicates a status. This also suggests that in the days of the Central Java Hindus, house was a status symbol and the placement of the house there served only as reliefs featuring characters of high strata. Keywords: iconography, traditional Javanese architecture, reliefs temple

Abstract

Two literary texts written by Chinese peranakan (Indonesiaborn Chinese) describe how the Chinese try to survive in Indonesia. They need a flexibility that is reflected in the use of language, literary genre, and their philosophy connected with the social environment where they live. The Dutch colonial government and the New Order treat them ambivalently. The legacy find its form of replacing Chinese names with Indonesian ones in order to get the national identity. They are inclusive to protect themselves from violence. Initially, it was safer to use neutral western names. Until now the Chinese peranakan tend to idolize Western, but at the same time doing cross cultural breeding through birth, marriage, and death rites. Most of them adopt middleeastern religion, despite also performing traditional Chinese, Javanese and western rites. Hybrid practices are no longer in the form of dialect because they come from a variety of cultural identities leading to a multicultural spirit that awakens them from ethnic sentiment. Keywords: Cina, ethnicity, hybridity, identity, peranakan

Abstract

This article discusses the ambiguity that occurs in the perspective of multiculturalism. Ongoing crosscultural dialogue between cultures with each other, influence each action antarunsur role of culture caused by the outflow of people or groups of people from one place to another place in the diaspora effect, is a form of multikulturaisme. Abstract

The development of the private plantations during the mid19th in the regency of Jember led to socioeconomic changes among the population. From that moment the indigenous population got the opportunities to make money provided by the large employment the plantation had generated. The development of plantation attracted migrants to come from Madura and other parts of Java and shifted the region’s demographic features from unpopulated to more densely populated. There emerged Madurese culture in North Jember and Javanese culture in the south. In central Jember where the Madurese and Javanese population groups were more or less equal in number, a cultural mix created a hybrid culture called as pandhalungan. Keywords: Jember, urban growth, pandhalungan.

Abstract

The revolution era was inseparable from the earlier period. Despite the radical changes during the revolution, the previous elements remained in existene and had significant influences. Probolinggo was a small town, a sea port having agricultural and plantation bases and from the 19th century had an important significance for the Dutch colonial rule, not only in physical but sociocultural es well. Its geographical location near to Madura made it easily accessible for Madurese migration. The Madurese people grew to become the majority and in cultural terms, there was a mix of Madurese and Javanese elements. Abstract

Differences in ethnic background do not lead to the different behavior patterns and strategies of the female plantation workers of the PTPN X Ajung, Jember regency. This is due to their similarities in low education level, early marriage ages and they have no sufficient life skills, play dual and even multiple roles, main income earners for their families. However, they do not identify themselves as poor people because of relying not merely on plantation sector, but also doing alternative jobs in work in informal sector. Keywords: behavior, female workers, plantation, strategy.
