Abstract

Abstract

The development of Kampung Biru Arema (KBA) to become an educational tourist destination in urban areas is a necessity to support an increase in the community's economy. Development carried out independently has not shown optimal results so that it requires the intervention of various parties to support in realizing the aspirations of the community. The academic community of the Faculty of Cultural Sciences as part of its academic responsibilities takes part in developing the village in the form of community assistance. This community service program is intended to provide assistance to the KBA community to become an integrated educational tourist destination. After conducting a series of preliminary activities, an agreement was reached to develop five (5) tourist points to be further developed as the main sites for KBA tourism activities. The five points were named Tourism Areas: History, Dolanan, Disaster Mitigation, Arema, and Basa Walikan. The stakeholders involved in this program have shown seriousness in the effort to realize the ideal picture of the direction and form of the KBA and committed to carry out development as planned together in the next phase. For this reason, the community service team embodies the shared understanding in a tangible form in the form of visual designs, physical structure in the form of miniature areas developed in tourist areas. In addition, the team also constructed an area at the KBA tourist location as a model for the realization of the visual design.

Abstract

A chronicle play written by English dramatis George Bernard Shaw in 1924 entitled Saint Joan is a complex and complete play. It does not only give us understanding about the history of France during the Hundred-Year War but give us also an insight of the struggle of a heroine namely Joan (Jean in French) against the superiority of corrupted people inside the church. As manifested in her actions during the war, Joan is teaching French on how they should fight against the English men under the name of God. By applying content analysis through the elements of the play particularly focused on the actions of the main character, Joan, this library research has proved that Joan’s actions cannot be judged as what Christian Christendom did. Instead of doing heresy Joan’s actions were the materialization of the spirit of Protestantism known and fought previously by Martin Luther, a protestant initiator from German. This research also prove that punishment given to Joan at the end of her life was a political judgment created by some ambitious people within the top hierarchy of catholic church in France at that time.

Abstract

This research discusses discourse of nationalism in Garin Nugroho’s Soegija, a biopic which premiered in 2012. The film is chosen because it presents the story of Soegijapranata, an intellectual who is not from dominant nationalist groups, during the era of independence movement; he is neither a prominent military figure nor a figure from the largest religious group in Indonesia. This film is analyzed to investigate its position in ideological contestations emerging after the Reformation, particularly after the 2000s. Seymour Chatman’s postulates regarding story and discourse in narrative structure of fiction and film (1978) is used as a theoretical framework for this research. The results show that discourse of nationalism is presented in the narrative structure of the film in the form of arguing the idea of universal humanity in the context of Indonesia as a nation. This effort is portrayed by the main character’s intellectual struggles against shallow primordialism that influences both Indonesian people’s perspectives during independence movement era and foreign people’s point of views, the colonizers, which are represented by subversive actions of the Dutch and Japanese in Indonesia. The values of universal humanity that have been adopted into the spirit of nationalism are stated through the main characters’ statements and actions. It can be concluded that the concept of nationalism in Indonesia is said to be born from a long struggle against oppression and injustice. This concept has become a dominant ideology which remains relevant, as implied in Soegija.

Abstract

PurposeThis study problematizes the interconnectedness between religion and media once again within the context of Indonesian biopics. This paper looks at the pattern of transformation of two Islamic elite-authoritative figures into Islamic-popular heroes that are thematically intertwined with Islamic discourse in Indonesia’s reform era. MethodThe research in this article combines several theoretical concepts by examining the relationship between text and context. The social semiotic paradigm of Kress becomes the main theory for disecting the text, while the concept of cultural commodities from Fiske and discourse formation from Foucault become the frame of reference for viewing the relationship between text and context. Results/findingsThe binary modes in those two biopics are not identical, according to this article, but both have transformed the stable concept of historical figures into more complex ones that generate polysemic ideas from an ideological standpoint. This article also explains how the process of meaning formation in the film's two Islamic figures are affected by three entities forming a three-party dialectic model. ConclusionIn the case of two biopics, Sang Pencerah (2010) and Sang Kiai (2013), this article confirms a dynamic model of conceptual design that connects texts and context. It demonstrates the existence of some variables that contribute to the polarization of contemporary Islam discourses in Indonesia.

Abstract

Multicultural reality of Indonesian society has encouraged many conflicts. Many people have tried to create a multicultural atmosphere. The scholars, politicians, and security forces attempted in their respective fields there are theoretical, ideal, and practical. This approach of simple ethnography research at Kudus reveals the unique role of these sweet soya sauces or ketchups. That is, it is not just being a condiment for flavoring the Kudus people dishes, but also already act as multicultural learning media. The good cooperation between the two ethnic groups, the Chinese as the owner of ketchup industries and their Javanese workers, clients, and customers have shown that these Ketchups has become one of the unifying elements that are commonly depicted always in a conflict; and  the latest event clashes between Chinese and pribumi at Kudus was in 1984. Thus, by looking at the Ketchups roles, this research shown that the ketchup industries in Kudus have melted the tongue and heart of Kudus people (China-Native) taste in a delicious thickened of ketchup liquid that always served at home, food-stalls, hotels, and restaurants. Keywords: Sweet Soya Sauces , Ketchup,  Media, Multiculturalism Learning, Kudus
