Abstract

Morphological characteristics and oil content of two accession numbers of tree basil (Ocimum gratissimum L.)Accession of essential oil plants can be distinguished based on morphological characters, oil content and its major chemical constituent. In this research, observations on two accession numbers of tree basil were performed to know their differences. Seeds were planted at the nursery, then transplanted to the polybag before their planted in the field. Fivety plants were planted at bedding size 2 x 3 m with 40 x 30 cm spacing. Morphological characters observed were habitus, stem diameter, shape and colour; leaves shape, colour and pubescentness; flower colour, petal colour and panicle arrangement; seed shape, colour and weight. The essential oil was extracted from whole herbs (young stem, leaves and flower) and analyzed their oil physicochemical characters and major oil constituent. Based on morphological characters both accession is difficult to be distinguished exept for their leaf odour.  Accession from Serang has less leaves odour compared to accession from Bogor. The oil content and physicochemical characters of the two accessions were most similar but different in the oil chemical constituent. Major chemical constituent of tree basil from Bogor is eugenol (37,04%), sineol (21,44%) and timol (9,67%), mean while major chemical constituent accession from Serang is Sineol (40,03%), eugenol (13,94%) and linalool (11,17%). For the pesticides used, accession from Bogor will be better because it has higher eugenol.

Abstract

Gandapura (Gaultheria fragrantissima) is a plant with high potency to develop because its main compound, methyl salicylate, is widely used in food and beverages, pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries. Present work was to study the processing, phytochemistry, essential oil content and herbicide effect from extracts and essential oils of gandapura. For the processing of raw material the wilting method was used (2,3 and 5 days) to observe its effect on essential oil and methy salicylate, quality of raw material such as ash content, ash insoluble in acid, extractives soluble in water and alcohol. The phytochemistry was conducted by the MMI method. The extract was made by the use of 3 types of solvent, such as methanol, ethyl acetate and hexane. The herbicide effect was conducted in vitro, using a modification method of Milliskiemiez et al. (1992) and Nezu et al. (1996). The result of the processing method showed that the longer the wilting time, the lower essential oil contents. However, methyl salicylate content was still constant in 2 days wilting time and decreased until 80% after 532 days. The water and alcohol soluble extractives were very high. The phytochemistry showed that methanol and ethyl acetate extracts contained alkaloid, flavonoida, glycoside, saponin and tannin while the hexane extract contained glycoside and alkaloid. The herbicide in vitro test on M. invisa showed that extracts and essential oil of gandapura inhibit the growth of shoots ranging from 42 - 70%, 36666,88 – 80,55%, 24,80 - 100% and 99,67%, each for methanol, ethyl acetate, hexane, essential oil and synthetic essential oil, respectively. The abundances of methyl soliveylate, as of the main compound, reashes 97%, while the methanol extract contain only 3,66%.

Abstract

The effect of tannin remover from the kinds of nutmeg on nutmeg juiceHaving special flavor, the flesh of nutmeg is potensial tobe processed into juice product.  However, harsh flavor and bitter aftertaste in this fruit influences the taste of nutmeg juice.  Nutmeg juice would be better if composition of acid, sugar, vitamine, and other phenolic materials could be arranged.  Nutmeg juice contained flavor and its fruit characteristic colour with pH 4.00 – 4.50 (materials of acid food).  The objective of the research was to improve the taste of nutmeg juice by reducing harsh flavor using tannin removing agents, formulation improve-ment and selection of nutmeg kinds. The   experi-ment was arranged in a completely randomized design with aplications. Research were  conduc-ted in six stages. The first step, determination of treatment of harsh reduction. The second step, ratio determination between nutmeg flesh, water and  percentage of sugar. The third step, duration of blanching process. The fourth step, optimation based on combination of the result of the first and third stages. The fifth step, determination of nutmeg species to be processed into nutmeg juice. The sixth step, organoleptic test by 30 panelist The result showed that the usage of albumin  1% in nutmeg juice was more preferred and  could reduce harsh flavor  and declined content of 3 544.06 mg per 100 g material, while CaCl3 solution 2.00% for 12 hours could reduce tannn to be 4 271.22 mg per 100 g material.  The result of organoleptic test showed that the taste of nutmeg juice could be enhanced using best formulation in every stage i.e. albumin 1.00%. Without blanching, ratio nutmeg flesh and water 1 : 4, 25% sugar, the use of Patani nutmeg, Banda nutmeg and Irian nutmeg in fact preferred by panelist.
