Abstract

Keywords: Illocutionary Act, Syntactic Realization, Yusuf MansurSpeech act is a way of expressing human’s thought through words. In speech act, the presence of particular utterances can even be used to perform actions by using gesture or body language. Moreover, since illocutionary acts as one of the speech act parts that have grammatical form of utterances as the representation, a speaker may realize his or her utterances in different ways. The writer focuses her study on the types of illocutionary act found in Yusuf Mansur’s speech entitled Berbicaralah yang Baik atau Diam. There are two problems to be solved in the study, namely (1) what types of illocutionary acts are found in Yusuf Mansur’s speech entitled Berbicaralah yang Baik atau Diam; and (2) how the illocutionary acts are syntactically realized. This study uses qualitative approach in relation to the use of clear and systematic description about the phenomena being studied. Descriptive study in textual analysis is applied in this study to analyze the transcribed script of Yusuf Mansur’s speech. The research findings show that there are 150 utterances containing illocutionary act in this study. There are, 94 utterances containing assertives, 3 utterances containing directives, 30 utterances containing commisives, 6 utterances containing expressive, and 17 utterances containing declarations. The majority type is assertives which means that the speaker tends to use assertive type in uttering his statement. However, almost all illocutionary acts are syntactically realized by using declarative sentence. There are 111 declarative sentences, 5 interrogative sentences, and 34 imperative sentences. Based on this research, it is found that illocutionary actcan be produced in most of utterances. The writer suggests English Department students find other theories concerning the notion of speech act and illocutionary act. She also suggests the next researchers investigate other elements of speech act since this study only covers illocutionary acts of someone’s utterances.

Abstract

Abstract

Keyword: Error, Error analysis, Consonant, English consonants. In the process of learning English as a foreign language, many learners face difficulties and produce some errors especially in pronouncing English consonants as well as English vowels. In this study, the writer was interested to analyze the phonological errors made by second semester students of Study Program of English Universitas Brawijaya regarding English consonants. Hence, the main focus of this study was the 24 English consonants. By conducting this study, the writer was able to find: first, the English consonants pronunciation error produced by the second semester students; and second, possible factors that influence their error. In answering the first research problem, the writer used Kelly’s and also Ladefoged et al.’s theories. Meanwhile, in answering the second research problem, the writer used Kenworthy and also Piske et al.’s theories. Moreover, the writer conducted her research using qualitative approach. In collecting the data, the writer firstly recorded the pronunciation of second semester students of Study Program of English Universitas Brawijaya when they read the pronunciation tasks provided. Then, she transcribed their pronunciations. The result showed that the students produced phonological errors in pronouncing thirteen consonants, those are /g/, /h/, /j/, /k/, /v/, /z/, /ʤ/, /ʧ/, /ɵ /, /ð/,/ƞ/, /ʒ/, and /ʃ/. Meanwhile, for the other consonants such as /b/, /d/, /f/, /l/, /m/, /n/, /p/, /r/, /s/, /t/, and /w/ are consonants which are error-free in pronunciation. Additionally, the most troublesome English consonant for the students is /v/. The writer also found 3 causes which give certain effect toward students’ error in pronunciation, those are the interference of L1 into L2, formal instruction, and the amount of L2 use.Based on these results, it can be concluded that the second semester students have not mastered the pronunciation of English language yet because most of them are still influenced by their first language pronunciation system. Finally, the writer suggests the future researchers conduct further research in spoken language since the number of this kind of research is limited. They could continue this study and find more information of students’ weakness in pronouncing English words

Abstract

Keywords : Hedonism, pleasure, lifestyle, standard, insider and outsiderHedonism is one of the lifestyle that is chosen by many modern people today. Hedonistic lifestyle aims to make people seek pleasure and happiness in ways that are sometimes beyond expected and the existing norms. The writer uses hedonism as the main theory to analyze because the problems of this novel are related to the luxurious lifestyle and temporary happiness. The writer also uses sociological approach because sociology is related to sociological aspect such as a group’s lifestyle and the division of social layers based on economy. This study shows that hedonistic lifestyle is reflected in the main characters of The Beautiful and Damned novel, Anthony Patch and Gloria Gilbert. They reflects hedonistic lifestyle and it becomes a habit. They will do anything to get what they want and they do not want to feel the hurt. They think the important things in their life are pleasure and happiness. Pleasure for Anthony is when he lives freely without hard work and gets his grandfather’s money. For Gloria, pleasure is a kind of worship from her husband to her beautiful face. Pleasure makes them selfish and do not care about other people. This behavior affects themselves and people around them. Hedonist leads to the formation of two social classes, in which people are grouped based on the standards they set. In sociology, it called insiders and outsiders. The main characters in this novel are included to insider because they share the same attachment and mission. Meanwhile the outsider is the group of people who are not included in insider group because these people do not meet the requirements in the standards of insider. They are neighbors who live in poverty. The impacts of hedonistic lifestyle occurred in the insider group, come in the form of breakdown of relationships between family members, friendships, self-esteem, and psychology. The first figure analyzed is Anthony Patch. When he got bankrupt, he  decided to hide the situation and pretends everything is fine. He does that because he does not want to lose his dignity and pride. Because of this problem, he suffered from depression symptoms and his mental being unstable. The effect of hedonistic lifestyle to the outsider appears when they become the subject of ridicule and humiliation by the insider.  The conclusion is hedonism is really reflected on main characters on The Beautiful and Damned novel and it brings some effects to themselves and to people around them. The suggestion for the future research, The Beautiful and Damned also could be analyzed with different theories like psychoanalysis and Marxism. The future researchers could dig deeper to find some interesting problems in this novel.

There is one problem to be solved the study, namely: What are the triggers of presuppositions of the main character’s speech in the James Bond movie “Dr. No”? The objective is to identify the triggers of presuppositions of the main character’s speech in the James Bond movie “Dr. No”.The research is a qualitative research. Descriptive study in textual analysisis applied in this study to analyze the presupposition triggers of the utterancesproduced by the main character script of Dr. No movie. The results  of the study reveal  that  ten  out  of thirteen  presupposition triggers are applied in the utterances of James Bond. The presupposition triggers are (a) definite descriptions, (b) change of state verbs, (c) iteratives, (d) verbs of judging, (e) temporal clauses, (f) cleft sentence, (g) implicit cleft with stressed continuents, (h) comparison and contrast, (i) non-restrictive relative clauses, (j) counterfactual conditionals and (k) questions. The writer found that James Bond produced 93 utterances which are containing presupposition triggers from 368 utterances uttered by James Bond. Questions are the most frequently used presupposition triggers (59 presupposition triggers) because as a secret service agent of British government, question is used by James Bond to interrogate people. Five most rarely used triggers were iteratives, verbs of judging, cleft sentence, non-restrictive relative clauses and counterfactual conditionals (1 presupposition trigger for each type) because as a secret agent, he did not really use these triggers to investigate something. The triggers that were not used by James Bond were factive verbs and implicature verbs. The writer suggests that the readers use presupposition triggers to presuppose utterances especially in the daily life. He also suggests that the next researchers, who want to conduct the study in the same topic, use theory fromanother theorist of presupposition and also use another object.

Abstract

Keywords:  Error, Error Analysis, Surface Strategy Taxonomy, Travel WritingError reflects the lack of knowledge of the learner. The process of language learning is the time when the language learners make mistakes or error. In writing, the learner must avoid producing error in order to compose a goodwriting. Regarding the errors made by the language learners, this study wasconducted to answer: (1) what kinds of errors in surface strategy taxonomy aremade by the fifth semester students of English Study Program in producing theirtravel writing texts? and (2) what is the dominant type of error made by the fifthsemester students of English Study Program in producing their travel writingtexts? This study used qualitative approach in relation to the use of clear and systematic description about the phenomena being studied. It is to describe thedata obtained from English Department students’ literary work in the form ofwritten texts. This analysis finds the grammatical errors which are made in the travel writing produced by the fifth semester students of Study Program of English Department of Universitas Brawijaya based on surface strategy taxonomy theory which consists of four types of errors. They are (1) omission, (2) addition, (3) misformation and (4) misordering. Mostly the errors occuring in misformation are in the use of tense form. Secondly, the errors are in omission of noun/verbinflection. The next error, there are many clauses that contain unnecessary phrase added there. According to the researcher, the cause why the students made such errors is that because of their limited vocabulary, so they just put the words they knew without concerning to any caution of inappropriate words or meaning. The researcher suggests the students who are interested in conducting thesame field should fill the gaps and lacks that cannot be fulfilled by this study. She also suggests that the next researcher should complete their future analysis, especially on an error analysis by using other theories than Dulay’s theory.
