Abstract

This paper discussed about the objective and the subjective observations which are used by the writer in representing the world when the writer is traveling. World is not just  merely a landscape or places, but there is also people. Through objectivity point of view, the writer is taking distance with the world which is described. On the contrary, subjective observation emphasizes the personal involvement of the writer towards the described world. In this research, we can see in both places and people, subjective observation is more dominant than the objective observation. Observation always sets off from the objective point of view to the subjective point of view. Some places are described objectively, but then it shifted into subjective. Explicit subjective observation is more dominant than the implicit one. However, even if the quantity is lesser, the implicit subjectivity gives more significant influence. Keywords: objective, subjective, travel

Abstract

In the recent years, there are numerous books containing travel writing, both in Indonesia and abroad, have been published. The books can be a novel, memoir, travelogue, poetry, and short story. One of the novels containing travel writing is Lumbini written by Kris Budiman. It is about Ratna and Niko who travel to Nepal. Told in many points of view, this novel shows its subjectivities. In order to reveal this, the researcher will apply the concept of travel writing by Carl Thompson. Through the analysis, it is found that subject “I” in this novel is not a dependent subject because it, sometimes, is substituated with “we”. Besides, subject “I” also interact with other object. Thus, the subject can be classified as an “romantic self”. According to Thompson, it seemingly more open than Enlightenment self. Keywords: subjectivity, travel writing, romantic subject.
