Abstract

Classroom plays a critical role in determining the visual legibility of instructional media, directly influencing students’ comfort, concentration, and learning outcomes. Inadequate lighting design, particularly in relation to window orientation and spatial configuration, can cause glare, uneven illuminance, and poor contrast, thereby impairing the readability of both blackboards and projection screens. This study maps how established theories of visual comfort are perceived by students as classroom users under real conditions. A mixed-methods design was employed, beginning with an exploratory qualitative phase to identify students’ perceptions of ideal classroom lighting, followed by a quantitative survey analyzed using multivariate correlation techniques. Data were collected from 135 student respondents across various educational levels. The results indicate that glare from windows shows a strong positive correlation (r = 0.612) with visibility disturbance, while window orientation exhibits a moderate positive correlation (r = 0.386–0.462) with visual clarity of learning media. The accuracy of luminaire placement (r = 0.447–0.483), lamp intensity (r = 0.344–0.367), and lamp color temperature (r = 0.345–0.399) show moderate correlations with visual clarity. In contrast, the number of windows and the adequacy of daylight show weaker correlations (r < 0.300) with visual clarity variables. These findings indicate that glare control, window orientation, and the configuration of artificial lighting have a more dominant influence from the students’ perspective.

Abstract

The rapid growth of coffee shop businesses in urban areas such as Jalan Sepakat 2, Pontianak, highlights a significant shift in commercial space design, where building façades function not only as protective elements but also as visual communication media that shape brand identity. This study aims to identify the typology of façade elements and compositions that define the architectural character of coffee shops in the area. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected through field observation, visual documentation, and measurements on eleven selected coffee shop buildings. The findings reveal that flat roofs, brick and concrete walls with painted finishes, wooden and metal cladding, large glass windows with aluminum or wooden frames, and sun-shading elements such as canopies and ventilation blocks (rosters) are the most commonly used features. In terms of composition, façades display variations of dynamic rhythms and asymmetrical balance, dominated by neutral color palettes. These combinations of elements and compositions contribute to the creation of a strong visual identity, appealing particularly to the younger generation and supporting effective branding strategies. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of contextual, communicative, and aesthetic commercial façade design and serves as a practical reference for architects and business owners in designing competitive and visually engaging buildings.

Abstract

Urban environments fundamentally shape how people perceive and experience space through their senses. Understanding this relationship is crucial for designing cities that actively support human well-being. This study examines how spatial structures and multisensory perceptions influence comfort, motivation, and psychological restoration among individuals engaging in walking and running within Jakarta’s Sudirman Central Business District (SCBD). A qualitative participatory approach was employed, combining direct observation, semi-structured interviews, and reflection to capture embodied sensory experiences. SCBD was selected as a representative high-density urban area that has recently transformed into one of Jakarta’s most popular destinations for running and morning walks on weekends. Findings reveal that spatial enclosure created by building facades, shade from trees and structures, and rhythmic alternations between open and enclosed street segments significantly enhance sensory comfort and spatial orientation. Participants also expressed higher motivation to engage in physical activity when visual diversity and greenery were present, indicating that hybrid environments combining urban form and natural elements can foster restorative and socially vibrant experiences. These results underscore the importance of context-specific, multisensory design strategies in shaping urban spaces that promote active, psychologically engaging, and socially connected lifestyles.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the concept of permeability in the Bukit Bintang area, Malaysia, by relating it to the principles of community architecture. The main focus of this study is on the interaction between building blocks, circulation, and lane width, as well as how these elements contribute to social interaction and mobility in the area. Regional permeability is essential in creating an environment that supports interconnectedness between individuals and communities. The methodology used includes field observation, circulation mapping, and spatial analysis to evaluate the dynamics of movement in Bukit Bintang. The results show that building block designs that take into account community architectural principles, such as connectivity and accessibility, can improve user experience and encourage social interaction. Ample width and open public spaces contribute to the creation of an inclusive environment, where individuals can interact more freely. These findings emphasize the importance of designing that takes into account the needs of the community to create efficient and user-friendly public spaces. The recommendations of the study include improved connectivity between building blocks and the development of wider pedestrian paths, as well as the provision of open space that supports community activities. This research is expected to contribute to the design of a city that is more responsive to the needs of the community, as well as support the sustainable development of the area and strengthen social relations in Bukit Bintang.
