Abstract

Phosphorus that is absorbed by Al and Fe in Andisols makes it not available to plants. One of efforts to improve P availability in Andisols is application of agent containing phosphate biological solution. P. fluorescens bacteria have ability to dissolve P because it can produce organic acid that can absorb Al and Fe so that P can be available to plants. Mycorrhiza Arbuscular (MA) are fungi that have access to the source of P-organic by colonizing plant roots. The purpose of this study was to explore the role of MA and Pseudomonas fluorescens bacteria in increasing P uptake by maize grown in an Andisol. The results showed that the inoculation of P.fluorescens bacteria  and MA increased P uptake by 24% and improved maize growth  by 27.59%.

Abstract

Industrial development grows rapidly nowadays, especially industries that support human life. In other side, every industry pays less attention for the system of disposing wastes such as oyster mushroom media waste and tofu liquid waste. This study was aimed to determine the effect of organic material application (oyster mushroom plant media waste and tofu liquid waste) through incubation toward availability of P, K, Ca, Mg, and Na in an Andisol of Cangar, Batu.  Treatments tested in this study were J1 (100% oyster mushroom compost), JC2 (75% oyster mushroom compost + 25% of tofu liquid waste), JC3 (50% oyster mushroom compost + 50% of tofu liquid waste), JC4 (25% oyster mushroom compost + 75% of tofu liquid waste), and C5 (100% of tofu liquid waste). The six treatments were arranged in a completely randomized design with three replicates. The results showed that application of 75% oyster mushroom compost + 25% tofu liquid waste (JC2) increased better soil K-availability and CEC until eighth-observations than the other treatments. Application of  50% oyster mushroom compost + 50% tofu liquid waste (C5) increased the amount of Mg-available from low criteria (0,56 mg/100g) into moderate criteria (1,30 mg/100g) compared with observation control.

Abstract

Typic Kanhapludult is a soil of Ultisol order that has water availability constraints due to the low available soil water pore and soil water holding capacity so that less support the plant growth. Application of soil amendments such as oil palm shell biochar can help increasing soil water retention and available nutrients to improve plant growth. The objectives of this study that was conducted in the glasshouse of Balai Penelitian Tanah, were to quantify the effect of biochar high doses to soil water retention, to improve some of soil physics and soil chemistry, and to analyze the potential utilization of palm oil shell biochar on vegetative growth of maize in a Typic Kanhapludult. The results of this study showed that application of high doses of oil palm shell biochar increased the soil water retention. Application of high dose of oil palm shell biochar significantly decreased bulk density and particle density, decreased rapid drainage pore, and increased porosity and available water pore. However, it did not significantly affect the saturated hydraulic conductivity and slow drainage pore. Soil organic carbon increased significantly while the soil acidity at the end of experiment increased from very acid to acid. Application of oil palm shell biochar increased maize height, fresh and dry weight of maize. While the stem girth and the number of leaves per plant were not significantly affected.

Abstract

Iron toxicity is a widespread nutrient disorder in lowland crop production, notably in lowland acid soils, swampy lands, coastal swamps and irrigated lowlands of Ultisols and Oxisols. It occurs only in flooded soils when the soil contains excessive amounts of iron. This excessive iron in soil has antagonistic effects on the uptake of many essential nutrients, poor growth and consequently yields reduction. The objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of different iron concentrations on growth characteristics and nutrient uptake of three pineapple clones (Ananas comosus L. Merr.). The experiment was held in a greenhouse of Research and Development Department of Great Giant Pineapple Company on December 2014 until March 2015. A randomize complete factorial design with two factors and four replications were used in this study. The first factor was pineapple clones (GP1, GP3, and F180) and second factor was iron concentration. Different amounts of iron as second factor 5 (control), 50, 100, 150, 200, 250 mg L-1 FeEDTA were added in the nutrient solution. The results showed that increase iron concentration was added in nutrient solution was reduced root length, number of roots, plant height, leaf area, root dry weight, and shoot dry weight significantly at p<0,05. Nutrient solution pH also decreased significantly with increasing concentration of iron in nutrient solution. Increased iron concentration in nutrient solution induced iron plaque formation on root surface and at the same time, Fe concentration on root tissues increased. However, higher iron concentration on nutrient solution results lower accumulation Mn in the roots. Excess iron had the same effect in reducing the absorption of P, K, and Ca on pineapple shoot. Whereas Fe and Mn uptake increased with increasing iron were added in nutrient solution. However, Mg absorption was not affected by the increase in the concentration of iron in the solution.

Abstract

Ngrangkah Pawon Village of East Java is one of the areas that was affected by Mount Kelud eruption which occurred in 2014. The eruption caused soils choked by volcanic ash. Volcanic materials cannot supply nutrients needed by plants as the volcanic materials are recent materials that have not undergone complete weathering. Entisols that dominate the Ngrangkah Pawon area. have low levels of clay and organic matter, so they have low water holding capacity that causes the soils having low water content and low N, P, and K contents. The purpose of this study was to explore the effect of organic matter in the form of chicken manure, cow manure and compost on nutrient contents available in an Entisol so sweet potato plant could grow and generating production increases. Treatments tested in this study were combinations of chicken manure with doses of 5, 10, 15 t ha-1 (B1D1, B1D2, B1D3), cow dung with doses of 5, 10, 15 t ha-1 (B2d1, B2D2 B2D3), and compost with doses of 5, 10, 15 t ha-1 (B3D1, B3D2, B3, D3). One control treatment (B0D0) was also included in the research design. Ten treatments were arranged in a randomized complete block design with three replications. At each plot treatment sweet potatoes were planted until harvest (3 months). Parameters observed at the time of harvest were soil pH, contents of C, N, P, and K, uptake of N, P and K by plant, and tuber yield. The results showed that the addition of organic matters in the forms of chicken manure, cow dung and compost significantly affected the values of soil pH, contents of C, N, P, and K, uptake of N, P and K by plant. However, all treatment could not significantly increase sweet potato tuber yield.
