Abstract

The land problem that commonly occurs in Ranu Pani Watershed is erosion. Ranu Pani Watershed is an area located in the mountains with very high soil erosion. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct good management in the upstream and downstream areas. The first step before carrying out the management is to analyze the occurrence of erosion in the Ranu Pani Watershed. The purpose of this research was to predict the potential erosion and the distribution of spatial data.. The results of the research showed that the erosivity value in the Ranu Pani Watershed was 961.44 and heavy to very heavy class (0.50-0.77) of erodibility, soil texture was dominated by silt, fine granular soil structure, and moderate dominant permeability. 56.80% of the area (158.27 ha) has a slop class III (15-30%) with the land cover are natural forest with lots of litter, grasslands, shrubs, and fields of onions and potatoes. Land management is managed cultivation follows the contour line but without conservation. The result of the calculation showed that almost all areas have potential erosion value exceed the permissible erosion determination, with the potential erosion value are 1.92-4246.28 tha-1 yr-1, the range of permissible erosion value are 0.029- 1.2 tha-1 yr-1, and the erosion hazard index value is 1.57-143442.49. The results of the spatial analysis showed that 64.39% of the area (179.41 ha) has a very heavy erosion hazard class and 69.50% of the area (193.66 ha) has a very high erosion hazard index.

Abstract

Changes in land cover of forest provide different soil organic matter which affects soil infiltration through soil porosity. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of differences in land cover on soil infiltration at UB Forest of Karangploso Malang. The study area was divided into six plots, namely protected area plots, mahogany production forests, pine production forests intercropped with coffee plants that have three different canopy densities (tenuous, sufficient and tight) and pine production forests intercropped with seasonal crops. Field observations were carried out to analyze the characteristics of vegetation with a sample plot measuring 20x20 m. The parameters observed were canopy density, basal area, plant density, litter and understorey. The taking of soil samples was done by making minipit which was repeated four times;  the parameters observed were organic matter, texture, bulk density, particle density and soil porosity. Infiltration measurements were carried out with two methods i.e. single ring infiltrometer and rainfall simulator, each of which was repeated three times. Observation data were subjected to Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and followed by with LSD test with a significant level of 5%. The results showed that differences in land cover can affect soil infiltration (F-count > F-table 3.33). The effect of land cover on infiltration occurs through litter which is a source of organic material which will then affect the physical properties of the soil, namely soil porosity. Soil porosity is a very influential factor in soil infiltration. The highest soil infiltration reta of 131.33 cm hour-1 was found in protected areas. Meanwhile, the lowest infiltration rate of 12 cm hour-1 was found in pine production forest plots intercropped with annual crops.

Abstract

Potato production in Indonesia decreased by 2.43% from 1,314,657 in 2019 and 1,282,768 tons in 2020. One of the causes of the decline in potato production is a lack of potassium. Potassium nutrient deficiency can be caused by fertilization that is not yet precise and is still done conventionally. The purpose of this study was to estimate the nutrient content of potassium using Sentinel 2-A. This study observed 50 points that were determined through the free grid method. Sentinel 2-A was transformed into GLI, GNDVI, NDVI which is the vegetation index and NDSI, and SAVI which is the soil index. The results showed that plant K correlated with GLI CS index (r = -0,46), NDVI CS (r = -0,48) and NDSI CS (r = -0,46). NDVI CS (R2 =2 3%) is the most accurate index in estimating the nutrient content of Potassium than GLI CS (R2 = 21%) and NDSI CS (R2 = 21%). Based on the results of the plant K regression test and NDVI CS, the regression equation y = 1,8003 + (-0,5716 NDVI CS) was obtained. The results of the validation test showed that the t table (-3.18) > t count (2.15) so that there is a significant difference in the estimation results of potassium with the results of potassium obtained in the field. Based on the results of the validation test which were significantly different, the productivity estimation model could not be used to estimate the potassium nutrient in potatoes.

Abstract

Sludge from the paper industry can affect soil fertility due to its organic content. However, sludge as waste has a contamination risk of polluting the soil. This research focused on the chemical properties content of sludge from the paper industry (pH, organic C, macro and micronutrients, heavy metals) and contaminant microbes (E. coli and Salmonella sp.) in order to evaluate to the potency of sludge to be soil amendment. Sludge sample was taken in 0-20 cm depth from Sumengko Village, Wringinanom, Gresik. The chemical properties were measured in Soil Chemistry Laboratory in Soil Science Department, and the biological properties were measured in Pest and Disease Laboratory in the Agricultural Faculty of Brawijaya University. The chemical and biological properties of sludge were compared to quality standards according to Keputusan Menteri Pertanian No. 261/2019 (Kepmentan No. 261/2019) from the Ministry of Agriculture, Indonesia. Sludge from the paper industry has the potency to be soil amendment because it meets the requirement from Kepmentan No. 261/2019. Its pH was neutral (6.9), the macro and micronutrients contents fit the requirement, and it had no microbial contaminant content.  However, the organic C was under expectation, and it has over Hg content.

Abstract

Cocoa is one of the mainstay commodities of Malang Region, which is sensitive to climate change. This research aimed to simulate climate change and its impact on water availability for cocoa plants in Donomulyo, Dampit, and Kromengan of Malang Regency using a simulated water balance method with climate change scenarios based on predictions from Indonesia Meteorological, Climatological, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) and Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The climate change scenario consisted of an increase in air temperature of 0.5,  0.7, and 1°C, combined with changes in rainfall -5, -10, and -20%. Climate change impacted the air temperature increase at the earth’s surface followed by rainfall pattern changing, thus affecting the agricultural sector related to water needed increase and water availability decreased for plants. The results showed that along with the increase in temperature and decrease in rainfall, the water demand increased by 1.08-2.31%. The water availability in the soil decreased, followed by an increase in production reduction. The reduction in cocoa production occurred in each scenario with the highest percentage in scenario C9 (ΔT1⸰C, ΔH-20%). Production reduction results from not meeting the water needs of cocoa plants because it has a value greater than the ability to store water in the soil that occurs in several phases of cocoa plant growth, especially during the dry month period.

Abstract

Tea plantation area in recent years has decreased by 0.75% annually. With the decline in the area of tea plantations, productivity also decreases. Decreased productivity can be caused by erosion, climate, clones, and management applications. The purpose of this study was to determine the availability of soil nutrients in Pagar Alam tea plantation and the relationship with productivity. The observation was held with secondary data and analyzed statistically with the correlation method. Parameters observed were pH, organic C, total N, P2O5, exchangeable K, and exchangeable Mg. The result showed that the relationship between soil nutrients such as organic C, total N, available P, exchangeable K, and exchangeable Mg with productivity was weak with correlation coefficient values of 0.00 – 0.199. These results also showed that the correlation was negative, which means that the two variables were inversely proportional. Plant maintenance factors have a more significant role in tea plant productivity than nutrients and fertilization, such as picking, pruning, root zone improvement, and plant pest control. If these factors can be controlled properly, shoot production will increase, and plant health can be maintained. Thus, in this case, the nutrient factor is not the main factor affecting productivity at Pagar Alam Tea Plantation, indeed the plant care factor.

Abstract

Chilli (Capsicum annum L.) is a horticulture comodities that high demand because it has a high economic value. The demand of Chilli increase every year as the population grows and the industry grows which requires Chilli as raw materials. The productivity of red chili in Jember Regency is also low, which is only 87.68 quintals hectare-1. Fluctuations in red chili production that occurred in the Jember area were caused by several things including an unsupportive environment such as declining soil fertility, high pest attacks, and excessive use of pesticides. Therefore there is a need for agricultural development in order to be able to meet food needs and increase export opportunities to neighboring countries. The parameters observed in this study were secondary data from the soil unit map. The secondary data referred to are soil drainage, soil depth in cm, slope related to erosion, altitude, standing water, soil cation exchange capacity, and soil pH. The improvement efforts made to improve the land suitability class is by setting the spacing, giving organic matter, agricultural lime, P fertilization, cutting and filling the land with a mound terrace system or bench terrace to reduce soil erosion.

Abstract

Tea plantations are mostly more suitable to be cultivated in areas with highland characteristics to get its’ subtropical climate which is great for the growth of tea. This requirement showed that tea plantations are also cultivated in areas with different ranges of slope and this condition could affect soil chemical properties such as soil nutrient content, including soil pH, soil organic carbon (SOC) and contents of N, Available P, K and Mg inside the soil. This study was conducted to analyze the correlation on different slope levels with soil nutrient contents by collecting the secondary data of land slope and soil chemical properties, analyzed statistically with a simple correlation method. The result showed there was no significant correlation between the slope levels and contents of soil chemical properties. Most of the soil chemical properties have a negative correlation to different slope gradients such as soil pH (r = -0.391), SOC (r = -0.348), total N ( r = -0.169), Available P (r = - 0.039), K content (r = -0.135), Mg content (r = -0.027). where the highest levels of nutrients were found at the lowest level of slope based on the site data. Soil chemical properties are needed to be considered in many tea plantations with different levels of slope and could be used as a recommendation in planning for conservation or restoration of degraded land or soil.

Abstract

Healthy soil could support plant growth by optimizing the availability of nutrients. The availability of nutrients influences the health of tea plants. Nutrient deficiencies would affect the plant physiology that exhibits the plant withering. This study aimed to define the relationship between soil nutrient availability with plant nutrient uptake. This research was conducted by managing secondary data soil chemical properties, and tea plant nutrients analyzed statistically with Pearson correlation. This study only found a significant correlation between soil pH with P and Mg uptake. Correlation results between soil nutrient and plant nutrient uptake obtained a significantly negative correlation on soil pH with P and Mg nutrients with a correlation value of pH-P (r=-0.52), pH-Mg (r=-0.52). There was no correlation between other soil nutrients and plant nutrient uptake. The results of this study can be used   to determine the dose of fertilization and the management recommendation of tea plants.
