Abstract

The basic reason for poor performance of livestock in developing countries, include Indonesia,  is qualitative fluctuations in feed. Therefore knowledge in utilizing agroindustry byproduct as feedstuff to meet nutrient requirement of animals is important. Rice straw is a crop residue of rice production and can be used as a feed for ruminants because it is easily and cheaply available in many Asian countries. Rice straws have low nutritive value and it is generally limited by several factors such as the low nutritional quality due to high fiber content and lignification process. In Indonesia, rice straw has been widely utilised in livestock feeding systems, thus the need to improve them is imperative as they are an abundant crop residue. Much more attention has been paid to improving its feeding value in order to increase livestock productivity. Many processing methods to improve the nutritive value of rice straw have been investigated. These methods can be classified as physical, chemical or biological. Usually, processing methods improves the nutritive value of straw by increasing its digestible energy content, by increasing feed intake, or by a combination of the two. This paper aims to examine the potential of rice straw as basal feed livestock as well as efforts to improve their nutritional value.Key words: livestock, rice straw, processing methods, nutritional value

Abstract

Testing of spermatozoa fertility in vivo is needed to find out the extent of the abilityof spermatozoa fertilization in the female reproductive tract. The fertility ability ofspermatozoa in fertilizing the ovum is indicated by the number of fertile eggs fromthe number of eggs incubated resulting from the mating with Artificial Insemination(AI). The aim of this research is to know the percentage of fertility of eggs from AIusing semen which has been stored cold for 8 hours on Ringe's diluent with theaddition of antioxidant glutathione. Collection semen with teaser female method isdone in Poultry Breeder Installation of Sekolah Tinggi Penyuluhan Pertanian (STPP)Malang. The 30 female chickens were divided into 3 groups of treatment P0: AIusing fresh semen with Ringer's diluent, P1: AI using cold cement with Ringer'sDiluent (8 hours duration storage) and P2: AI using cold semen with 0.5 mMaddition in Diluent Ringe's (8 hours duration storage). Experiment design usingComplete Randomized Design (RAL) and  nonparametric data analysis with chi-square.The observed variable was egg fertility calculated based on egg fertility percentage.The results showed that the dilution treatment had a significant effect (P <0,05) onfertility egg, with the best result indicated by P0 that is 76% fertility, followedby P2 with fertility 42% and P1 which showed the lowest fertility was 34%. IB withcold cement has not demonstrated a good percentage of fertility despite 0.05 mMglutathione added as an antioxidant. It is recommended that AI in domestic poultryusing fresh semen with Ringe's diluent, is done as soon as possible to obtain optimumfertility.

Abstract

This research was conducted at the Center  of Artificial Insemination (BBIB)Singosari , Malang, East Java. The purpose of this research was to determinethe parameters of fresh semen quality including volume, pH, individual motilityand concentration of frozen semen production and  recovery rate of  Bali bullsin different seasons. The material used were fresh semen of 14 heads of Bali’sbull in 3, 5, 6, 10, and 11 years and secondary data from November 2015 toSeptember 2016 at BBIB Singosari. The method used in this research was casestudy and the data were analyzed descriptively. The results showed that thehighest volume semen Bali bull in summer was 6.05±1.50 ml. The pH in rainyseason and summer were 6.5±0.07. Semen of Bali’s bull dominated by the white-milk color. The highest of color (white-milk), individual motility, concentrationand total of frozen semen production were at summer in September. The average ofcolor, individual  motility, concentration  and total of fozen semen productionwere 89%±0.10, 66.98 ± 0.05%, 1159.25 ± 211.28 million/ml and 22682 ± 707.95straw. Post thawing Motility (PTM) and RR value were 45.28 ± 0.02%; 66.79± 0.05semen of Bali’s bull highest at summer in August. The conclusion  showed thedifferences of season will affect to volume, color, individual motility,concentration, PTM, the value of RR and production of frozen semen Bali bull,but it is not effect for pH semen.

Abstract

The in-vivo experimental study on rabbit animals  mixed of Moringa oleifera, Lamk(MOL), Gliricidia sepium, Paraserianthes falcataria and Ceiba pentandra leaf meal(1: 1: 1: 1 ratio) of 10%, 20% and 30% in concentrate feed (= green concentrate).The research was conducted at "Mandiri" Breeders Association, Kagrengan NgijoKarangploso. The research aimed to evaluate the use of green concentrate withforage of cabbage leaves on feed intake, digestibility, digestible intake and averagedaily gain (ADG) of rabbit. The method used was the experimental method, arrangedin Randomized Block Design (RBD) with 4 treatments and 4 groups. The treatmentsapplied were P0 (basal diet+concentrate 18% crude protein/CP, without leaf meal),P1 (basal diet+green concentrate 18%CP with 10% mixed leaf meal), P2 (basaldiet+green concentrate 18%CP with 20% mixed leaf meal), P3 (basal diet+greenconcentrate 18%CP with 30% mixed leaf meal). The measured variables were feedintake, digestibility, digestible intake and average daily gain of rabbit.The resultsshowed that the use of 10 to 30% mixed leaf meal in green concentrate of rabbitsprovide to produce ADG higher than concentrate without leaf meal. During the study,rabbit’s body weight increased to 1.8-2.3 kg head-1. Supplementation of mixed leafmeal up to 30% on green concentrate can produce feed intake of 4-5% dry matter(DM) from  body weight, and ADG up to 19.83 ± 7.21 g head-1day-1

Abstract

Bovine Ephemeral Fever (BEF) or three days sickness is one of the most common disease in cattle. The disease is caused by rhabdoviridae virus transmitted  through mosquito as a vectors. This paper aims to determine the incidence of BEF cases in Gunungkidul district, Yogyakarta. Diagnoses BEF based on information collected through the anamnesis from owner and the results of clinical examination. 134 (48%) from 277 cows were examined in the   Gunungkidul district period October-November 2016 diagnosed BEF. Clinical signs were found consist of anorexia 111 cases (34%), hyperthermia 99 cases (31%), lameness 42 cases (13%), cow downer 31 cases (10%), nasal discharge 35 cases (11%) and hypersalivation  6 cases (2%). Bovine Ephemeral Fever mayority reported on the second day of the disease progression by 67 cases (42%). The most common therapy  used combinations of antipyretics, antibiotics and vitamins were 45 cases (33%). Based on the information from the farmers, the treatment has given good results and absence of  the absence of post-treatment recurrence

Abstract

The study of this research was to evaluate the effect of pegagan (Centellaasiatica) on quail production performance. The materials used in this studywere 200 quail phase layer Coturnix-coturnix japonica strain. The methodused was experimental design with completely randomized design (CRD) with 4treatments and 5 replications. The treatments in this study were the feedcontrol without the addition of pegagan meal (P0); 0.5% (P1); 1% (P2) and1.5% pegagan meal (P3). The variables observed were feed intake (g/bird /day);Hen Day Production (%); feed conversion and egg weight (g/bird/day). Theresults of this research showed that pegagan meal not effect significantly(P>0.01) on feed intake (g/bird/day), Hen day Production (%); feed conversionand egg wight (g/bird/day) in quail production performance.it can be concluedthat Feed intake, Hen day Production, feed conversion and egg wight was beston P3. 1,5% pegagan meal in the feed were advised

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to measure the motility of Madura bullspermatozoa using three different diluents (tris aminomethane, CEP-2 andskim milk) duringcold storage. The research material used were 2 Madurabulls. Collecting semen method used artificial vagina, followed by freshsemen analysis and processing of liquid semen. Observation of liquid semenquality was carried out up to the 5th days of cold storage. Motilityexamination of semen liquid used Computerized Assisted Semen Analysis(CASA), namely SCA v.5.2. The parameters measured were: progressive motility,motility, velocity straight linear (VSL), velocity curve linear (VCL),velocity average pathway (VAP), straightness (STR), linearity (LIN), wobble(WOB), hyperactivity (H), Beat cross frequency (BCF), amplitude lateral head(ALH). Data was analyzed by Minitab 17. Motility and progressive motility ofspermatozoa in tris aminomethane and CEP-2 were higher than skim milk for 5days of cold storage. The VCL value of tris aminomethane was higher thanCEP-2 and skim milk. VSL scores barely show the difference among diluents.VAP values in tris aminomethaneand CEP-2 are higher than skim milk at thebeginning of storage. The LIN, STR and WOB values of the CEP-2 and skim milkyield higher values than tris aminomethane. The percentage value ofhyperactivity spermatozoa was same among diluents. The ALH value oftrisaminomethane was higher than CEP-2 and skim milk. BCF values in CEP-2was higher than skim milk and tris aminomethane. Tris aminomethane and CEP-2can support the motility of Madura bull spermatozoa than skim milkfor 5 daysof storage

Abstract

Characteristics of respondents the majority (54.38%) were at a productive age,  in the study area had a low educational background were 89.28% the elementary school. Respondents (49.12%) had more than 20 years of farming experience. Ongole Crossbreed (PO) were the most preferred cattle raised by the majority of respondents (57.89%). The respondents mostly (94.74%) sold their cattle to the local trader or middlemen. Who sold their cattle directly to the animal market opted Pakis as the most preferred location (40.35%). The majority of respondents (68.42%) agreed that middlemen played a crucial role in determining the selling price. The selling price of cattle in producers level has a low correlation (r = 0.32) with price in the traders level. Also, the price transmission was low (0.00099). The farmers earned monthly on average Rp 113.160 per animal, the local traders Rp 375.000 per animal. This low-income share caused by the fact that farmers should pay production costs as an amount of Rp 2.329.772 per animal per year or Rp 194.147 per animal per month.

Abstract

This research was conducted to determine the ability of binahong (Anrederacordifolia (Ten.) Steenis) leaf juice as alternative herbal antibacterialagainst teat dipping mastitis of livestock. Pure isolate of Staphylococcusaureus and Esherichia coli taken from sub clinical mastitis of dairy cowwere used in this experiment. The experiment was examined with four differenttreatments and five replication 60% (P 1 ), 80% (P 2 ), and 100% (P 3 ) ofbinahong leaf juice concentration’s as treatment and iodips 10% (P0) as placebo.Based on statisctical method, the result prove that binahong’s leaf juice hadpotentially reduced against growth of bacteria as play of inhibition’s zone onNA media culture. Mostly 100% (P 3 ) of binahong leaf juice concentrations wasthe best treatment that gave inhibition zone in Staphylococcus aureus(9.72 ± 4.36 mm) and Escherichia coli (9.15 ± 4.57 mm). This could be concludedthat binahong’s leaf juice had an ability avoid growth of mastitis bacteria andit can be potentially used as herbal antibacterial in teat dipping to againstmastitis.

Abstract

The research was aimed to examine nutritive potency of Moringa oleifera and Leucaena leucocephala leaves according to ruminal organic matter degradability and total volatille fatty acids production in vitro. The ruminal degradability of organic matter was determined after 1, 2, 4, 8, 12, 24 and 48 of single batch culture incubation. The data weretested using T test. The result showed that degradable and potential degradable fractions of M. oleifera leaf organic matter werehigher (p <0.05) than that of L. Leucocephala leaf organic matter Production of rumen total VFA from M. Oleifera leaf higher (P<0.05) than from L. leucocephala leaf. The nutritive potency of M. oleifera leaf was better than L. Leucocephala.
