Abstract

The hegemony of the New Order state was established through the abusive use of press and moreover leave the press in a political inertia. The attempt to dismantle the hegemony shall rely on an understanding of the importance of establishing reciprocal relationship between the state and the citizen. Freedom of the press is meaningful to the state for securing its legitimacy and on the other hand opens up citizen participation in controlling the state.

Abstract

Nationalism is a given cultural reality which keeps changing its meaning through out our history. Such changing is partly due to a manipulative exercise by the rulers, partly through socialization of the so called national history. Societal conflict and tention emerged in many part of Indonesia recently has been due to unfinished transformations, yet pursuing the manipulative path of nationalization of nationalism lead us to absurdity of our collective identity. Reconstructing Indonesian historiography is an imperative, whithin which local history should have a fair treatment.

Abstract

Uncritical understanding of the notion of nation-state in Indonesia has led a discredit to ethno-nationalism, which essentially is the primary form of nationalism in favour of the secondary form of nationalism. The former refers to a shared imagination of being a member of ethnic group, and the later refers to a shared feeling of being a citizen of the state. Such a mistreatment of ethno-nationalism in governing the state has troubled the state itself as demand of more local autonomy sprang out. It is through a process of political decentralization that the state attempt to accommodate demand for expressing ethno-nationalism. The difficult process of negotiating transition toward a democratic order in Indonesia is eased by the states capability to redefine the meaning of nationalism and local autonomy.

Abstract

Nation-state has now been challenged by many forces for not be able to fully meet its citizens aspirations. These challenges have put the fate of national integration on the brink of bankruptcy. But beyond that challenges, nation-state has systematically grown as a strong actor in both national and international arena. The question is how to bridge those two contradictory phenomena. Herein, several strategic interventions of public policy can be adopted Consociational democracy, representative bureaucracy, local autonomy and federalism are but some suggested alternatives. For Indonesia, the last two alternatives are far more feasible than the first two. But since federalism is sometimes resisted by central government and used no more than a political arsenal by those of politicians, then local autonomy comes to the fore to be the focal agenda. Thus, the challenge ahead is to realize local autonomy by accommodating those strategic values of federalism such as opening power window to broader public participation, respecting pluralism, and enforcing political and economic justice. This last point is the theme of this paper.

Abstract

This work is an analysis of Giddenss thinking on nation-state. It is a discussion of correlation between state, society and modernity. Modernity, in his analysis on nation-state, is placed as the important stand point for the understanding. Modernity itself has four institutional dimensions: heightened surveillance, capitalistic enterprise, industrial production and consolidation of centralized control of the means of violence. None is wholly reducible to any of the others. Two key questions will be answered by this study. First, what is modernity? How does it work? Second, what is nation-state?Whatapproach did Giddens use for analyzing nation-state? How does nation-state work in the frame of modernity? This work tries to answer all questions above. It is addresses to explore historical problematical reasons of his study on nation-state and then describe its characteristics. The most important thing, it is intended to analyse relationship between state, society and modernity in the development of nation-state.
