Abstract

This study aimed at analyzing representation of ten sociocultural sub aspects, namely: age; gender; social distance and status; politeness strategies; genres; registers; major dialects; and Background Knowledge of the Target Language Group (BKTLG) and Crosscultural Awareness (CcA), in an e-textbook, Developing English Competencies (DEC). Discourse Qualitative Content Analysis was the research method and DEC was the data corpus. Data were gathered through e-textbook observation and were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. Findings showed that: age group of >12-18  years contributed 40% of the total 117 units; 1.098 units signified man, and 321 units were of women; 71% of conversational texts showed intimate social distance and the rest 29% indicated distant one; negative politeness strategies were employed most often (40.12%); non-drama/prose/poetry genres occupied 66% of the entire units; informal words and/or expressions were the most frequently  appeared register; British English dialects gained 70% of the total 197 occurred units; 62% of the texts were BKTLG-related, leaving the rest 38% of them CcA-related. Qualitatively, all sub aspects were interconnected, creating a tight sociocultural entity.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to investigate (1) whether there is a difference in the reading comprehension  between students who are taught by using CIRC strategy and those taught by using the conventional strategy; (2) an interactional effect between the reading strategy applied and achievement motivation toward students? reading comprehension; (3) a difference in reading comprehension between students with high achievement motivation who are taught by using CIRC strategy and those taught by using the conventional strategy; and (4) a difference in reading comprehension between students with low achievement motivation who are taught by using CIRC strategy and those taught by using the conventional strategy. The study administrated a 2X2 factorial design, which 175 students were involved as the sample. The data were collected by using questionnaire and a reading test then analyzed by Two-way ANOVA. The result indicates that (1) there is a significant difference in reading comprehension between the students who are taught by using CIRC strategy and those taught by using the conventional strategy; (2) there is an effect of the interaction between the teaching strategy applied and students? achievement motivation toward their reading comprehension; (3) there is a significant difference in reading comprehension between students with high achievement motivation who are taught by using CIRC strategy and those taught with the conventional strategy; and (4) there was significant difference in reading comprehension between the students with low achievement motivation who are taught by using CIRC strategy and those taught with the conventional strategy.

Abstract

This study was a Research and Development study (R&D) used Sugiyono?s model which aimed at identifying problem and the needs of the lesson plans in SMK Triatma Jaya Singaraja, determining the suitable design and developing character based lesson plan in SMK Triatma Jaya, measuring the effectiveness and the quality of the lesson plan developed. The data of the present study were analyzed descriptively and quantitatively. This result showed that the existing lesson plans did not clearly state the values of nation character and the assessment and it was not explicitly stated on the learning activity. The learning activity seemed monotone. There seemed to be materials repetition. The materials must be suitable with the students? department. The lesson plans developed were designed based on technical guideline of lesson plan development proposed by Board Directors of Senior High School Development (2010) with character assessment as an addition. The lesson plans were developed in form of integrated lesson plan. The lesson plans developed were effective and the quality is excellent.

Abstract

This study was a research and development (R&D) study designed by Lee and Owens (2004) which involved: need analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. The data were gathered through observation, questionnaires, interview, validation technique and test. The method of data collections were interactive data analysis and ideal theoretic reference. The result of this study showed that: (1) the students need specific reading material based on their future job; (2) the design of Blended Learning whose purpose was to make the teaching and learning process became student- centered activity and makes the students become self-assisted language learners; (3) the developed blended learning based on reading material had a very high validity; (4) the developed blended learning based on reading material could improve the students? reading comprehension; and (5) In developing and implementing the blended learning based reading material,  the technical problem was faced by the teacher.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk (1) mendeskripsikan dan menganalisis strategi eksklusi pada portal berita Detik.com dan Kompas.com dalam memberitakan Fahri Hamzah, (2) mendeskripsikan dan menganalisis strategi inklusi pada portal berita Detik.com dan Kompas.com dalam memberitakan Fahri Hamzah, dan (3) mendeskripsikan dan menganalisis perbandingan strategi eksklusi dan inklusi pada portal berita Detik.com dan Kompas.com. Subjek penelitian ini adalah media siber Detik.com dan Kompas.com, sedangkan objek penelitian ini adalah strategi eksklusi dan inklusi dalam pemberitaan kasus Fahri Hamzah. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan metode dokumentasi dari awal Mei hingga data jenuh (tidak terdapat data baru). Data-data yang memenuhi kriterialah yang akan digunakan. Oleh karena itu, pemilihan berita ini didasarkan pada teknik purposive sampling (sampel bertujuan). Instrumen dalam penelitian ini menggunakan kartu data. Data kemudian dianalisis dengan menggunakan analisis wacana kritis Theo van Leeuwen.Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa (1) strategi eksklusi lebih banyak digunakan oleh portal berita Kompas.com, (2) strategi inklusi lebih banyak digunakan portal berita Detik.com dalam mengonstruksikan pemberitaannya, (3) baik Detik.com maupun Kompas.com sama-sama menggunakan strategi eksklusi dan inklusi dalam mengonstruksikan pemberitaan dengan persentase yang berbeda. Simpulan dari hasil penelitian adalah Kompas.com cenderung menggunakan strategi eksklusi (pasivasi) (54,55%) dengan tujuan menyembunyikan subjek/pelaku dalam pemberitaan. Di sisi lain, Detik.com cenderung menggunakan strategi inklusi (indiferensiasi-diferensiasi) dalam memproduksi beritanya (24%) dengan tujuan memberikan keterangan tambahan untuk memperjelas garis batas antara dua pihak yang diberitakan. Berdasarkan simpulan tersebut, ada beberapa saran yang dapat disampaikan yaitu: (1) pembaca agar lebih kritis dan cermat dalam memilah informasi, (2) pemilik media diharapkan dapat memproduksi berita dengan lebih berimbang, (3) peneliti lain dapat melakukan penelitian sejenis pada media lain dan juga terhadap fokus pemberitaan lain, (4) penelitian selanjutnya dapat dilakukan oleh peneliti di luar bidang bahasa, seperti komunikasi, sosial, bahkan politik.
