Abstract

This paper addresses an integrated production and delivery batch scheduling problem for a make-to-order environment over daily time period, where the holding costs of in-process and completed parts at a supplier location and of completed parts at a manufacturer location are distinguished. All orders of parts with different due dates from the manufacturer arrive at the same time. The parts are produced in production batches and subsequently the completed parts are delivered in delivery batches using a capacitated vehicle in order to be received at the respective due dates. This study was aimed at finding an integrated schedule of production and delivery batches so as to meet the due date at minimum total cost consisting of the corresponding holding cost and delivery cost. The holding cost is a derivation of the so-called actual flow time (AFT), while the delivery cost is assumed to be proportional to the number of deliveries. The problems can be formulated as an integer non-linear programming model, and the global optimal solution can be obtained using optimization software. A heuristic algorithm is proposed to cope with the computational time problem using software. The numerical experiences show that the proposed algorithm yields near global optimal solutions.

Abstract

Fossil corals are commonly used in paleoclimate studies to get records of climate parameters throughout the Holocene and beyond. Diagenesis is known as an important error source in paleoclimate reconstruction. The aim of this research was to provide a comprehensive diagenetic investigation involving 2D-XRD, petrographic analysis, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of Porites spp fossil samples from South Pagai, Kendari and Banten Bay, Indonesia as a starting point for further climate studies using coral proxies. This research focused on samples with around 1% calcite content, a level that can create misinterpretation of geochemical proxies. The results indicate that the samples from Banten Bay and South Pagai are well preserved and reliable for paleoclimate study. Only Sample BG1 is not recommended for further use in geochemical proxy analysis due to intensive diagenesis. 2D-XRD allows calcite screening without destroying the coral sample and assists in defining alternative sampling transects. Secondary aragonite and dissolution cannot be identified with 2D-XRD, therefore diagenetic screening should be combined with petrographic and SEM analysis in any areas presumed to have diagenetic textures.

Abstract

Packer tests and slug tests were conducted at 49 points at the Grasberg surface mine, Indonesia to obtain hydraulic conductivity data. The HC-system approach, which relies on rock quality designation, lithology permeability index, depth index, and gouge content designation, was applied. Geotechnical drill holes in 441 locations, consisting of 4,850 points of information, were used to determine the K values using the equation K = 2x10-6x HC0.5571. The K values, which were within the range of 10-8 and 10-5 m/s, were distributed into five alternative 3D distributions using Ordinary Kriging (OK) and Artificial Neural Network (ANN). The result of the ANN modeling showed that some of the K values, with log K varying from -10.51 m/s to -3.09 m/s, were outside the range of the observed K values. The OK modeling results of K values, with log K varying from -8.12 m/s to -5.75 m/s, were within the range of the observed K values. The ANN modeled K values were slightly more varied than the OK modeled values. The result of an alternative OK modeling was chosen to represent the existing data population of flow media because it fits well to the geological conditions.

Abstract

This research shows the use of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) with finite volume method (FVM) to study the species diffusion and mixing characteristics in a tubular membrane filled with vertical baffles. This study exhibits how to set up the FVM for CFD simulation and residence time distribution (RTD) analysis and compare the mixing characteristics of two membrane tubes with a different number of baffles using RTD curves. In this study, the effects of the number of baffles on flow patterns, features and behavior of air were identified completely through computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. In addition, a two-dimensional simulation was implemented to study the effects of steady and unsteady (transient) flow in the tubular membrane. The residence time distribution (RTD) of a tracer in a co-current flow pattern was investigated. For this, the tracer was injected for 1 second into the membrane tubes on a frozen flow field and the concentration variation of the tracer over time was monitored at the outlet.

Abstract

The financial implications and the time required for carrying out a comprehensive geotechnical investigation to characterize a site can discourage prospective private residential building developers, especially where a large area of land is to be investigated for construction purposes. Also, most of the geotechnical test procedures utilized during site investigation only provide information on points tested in the subsurface. This research method suggests an approach of investigating the subsurface condition of a site in order to obtain key subsoil geotechnical properties necessary for foundation design for proposed engineering facilities. Seismic wave velocities generated from near surface refraction were combined with percussion drilling and cone penetration tests to obtain a comprehensive geotechnical investigation. From the results of the seismic refraction method, the bulk density of the soil, Young's modulus, bulk modulus, shear modulus and allowable bearing capacity of a competent layer that can bear structural load at the particular study site were determined. The most competent layer was found within the depth observed by geotechnical methods. In addition, regression equations were developed in order to directly obtain the bulk density of the soil, Young's modulus, bulk modulus, shear modulus and allowable bearing capacity from the primary wave velocities.

Abstract

This study deals with the precision performance of the CNC flame-cutting machine used in spatial surface operating conditions and presents an accuracy enhancement method based on processing error modeling prediction and real-time compensation. Machining coordinate systems and transformation matrix models were established for the CNC flame processing system considering both geometric errors and thermal deformation effects. Meanwhile, prediction and compensation models were constructed related to the actual cutting situation. Focusing on the thermal deformation elements, finite element analysis was used to measure the testing data of thermal errors, the grey system theory was applied to optimize the key thermal points, and related thermal dynamics models were carried out to achieve high-precision prediction values. Comparison experiments between the proposed method and the teaching method were conducted on the processing system after performing calibration. The results showed that the proposed method is valid and the cutting quality could be improved by more than 30% relative to the teaching method. Furthermore, the proposed method can be used under any working condition by making a few adjustments to the prediction and compensation models.

Abstract

Liquefaction mitigation can be achieved by dissipating seismic pore pressures. The research reported in this paper elaborates the effectiveness in dissipating seismic pore pressures of a gravel bed and relief well system using gravel columns in a case study in Cilacap, Indonesia. Seismic pore pressure generation was analyzed using commonly available methods in liquefaction analysis. The evaluated pore pressures in the sand layer and gravel columns were used in a 2D dissipation analysis using finite-difference consolidation equation solutions. The results of this study showed that a simple and cost-effective relief well and gravel bed or strip system can effectively dissipate excess pore pressures in the sand layer and gravel columns to a maximum residual pore pressure below 40%, thus reducing liquefaction potential as well as protecting the foundations in the sand.

Abstract

This paper presents a macro data analysis of Indonesian road accidents in the form of statistical data. Traffic accidents and their subsequent fatalities bring enormous social and economic consequences. A good understanding of the problem is expected to initiate major action toward the improvement of road and vehicle safety. One important milestone is the collection and analysis of road accident data. The results from this study portray the 'tangled threads' problem of traffic in Indonesia. The population number and number of vehicles have increased steadily, as has been accurately predicted by experts. Meanwhile, there is not enough infrastructure growth. Motorcycles are the main contributor to traffic accidents and fatalities due to their popularity as an effective vehicle to jump traffic jams. The 'tangled threads' need an extremely creative and comprehensive solution.

Abstract

In this paper, a comprehensive literature review is presented regarding dynamic progressive buckling analyses of foam-filled hat section columns. The results obtained from a numerical simulation were in good agreement with the theoretical predictions. Remarks and analyses are given about the influence of aluminum foam filling in tubular-hat structures. The contribution of aluminum foam to increase both the crushing load and the mass specific energy absorption is significant. In addition, effects of geometrical parameters like wall thickness are discussed to study the role of thin walls in foam-filled hat sections.
