Most of existing adaptive control schemes are designed to minimize error between plant state and goal state despite the fact that executing actions that are predicted to result in smaller errors only can mislead to non-goal states. We develop an adaptive control scheme that involves manipulating a controller of a general type to improve its performance as measured by an evaluation function. The developed method is closely related to a theory of Reinforcement Learning (RL) but imposes a practical assumption made for faster learning. We assume that a value function of RL can be approximated by a function of Euclidean distance from a goal state and an action executed at the state. And, we propose to use it for the gradient search as an evaluation function. Simulation results provided through application of the proposed scheme to a pole -balancing problem using a linear state feedback controller and fuzzy controller verify the schemeâs efficacy.

An electrostatic precipitator (ESP) with negative pulse corona discharge for removal of submicron particles in the exhaust gas of thermal equipment such as boilers, burners or internal combustion engines is presented. A wire-cylinder ESP was designed and constructed for experimental testing at laboratory scale. The collection efficiency of submicron particles in the exhaust gas of a diesel burner under various dust loadings and gas velocities was investigated. The results were compared with those obtained from the conventional DC ESP technique. It was found that the pulse peak voltage supply could be set much higher than the sparking limit of the DC energized unit. Thus, the electric field density could be increased, which resulted in a higher collection efficiency. The higher pulse frequency also increased the collection efficiency, especially for submicron particles.

The acid failure of aluminium alloy in 2 M hydrochloric acid solution in the presence of Vernonia amygdalina extract was investigated using gasometric technique. Aluminium alloy coupons of dimension 4 cm by 1 cm were immersed in test solutions of free acid and also those containing extract volumes of 2, 3, 4 and 5 cm3 at ambient temperature for 30 minutes. The volumes of hydrogen gas evolved as a result of the rate of reaction were recorded and analyzed. Analysis revealed that maximum inhibitor efficiency which corresponds to the lowest corrosion rate was obtained at optimum inhibitor volumes of 5 cm3, with reduction in the corrosion rate observed to follow in order of increasing extract volumes. Adsorption study revealed that Temkin isotherm best described the metal surface interaction with the extract phytochemicals, with 12 minutes becoming the best exposure time for the phytochemicals to adsorb to the metal surface at all volumes. Statistical modelling of the corrosion rate yielded an important relationship suitable for estimating corrosion rate values once volumes of the extract is known. Microstructural studies, showed an indirect relationship between crack growth rates and extract volumes, while consistency of the irregular intermetallic phases increases with increasing extract volumes.

The interaction of the affective has emerged in implicit human-computer interaction. Given the physiological signals in the recognition process of the affective, the different positions by which the physiological signal sensors are installed in the body, along with the daily habits and moods of human beings, influence the affective physiological signals. The scalar product matrix was calculated in this study based on metric multidimensional scaling with dissimilarity matrix. Subsequently, the matrix of individual attribute reconstructs was obtained using the principal component factor. The method proposed in this study eliminates day dependence, reduces the effect of time in the physiological signals of the affective, and improves the accuracy of affection classification.

 This paper presents an Hâ estimation approach to active control of acoustic noise inside an enclosure. It is shown how Hâ filter theory and algorithm can be effectively applied to active noise control to provide important robustness property. Real-time implementation of the algorithm is performed on Digital Signal Processor. Experimental comparison to conventional FxLMS algorithm for active noise control is presented for both single channel and multichannel cases. While providing some new results, this paper also serves as a brief review on Hâ filter theory and on active noise control.

Papandayan volcano located in the southern part of Garut regency, around 70 km away from Bandung city, West Java. Many methods carried out to monitoring the activities of volcano, both continuously or periodically, one of the monitoring method is periodically GPS survey. Basically those surveys are carried out to understand the pattern and velocity of displacement which occurred in the volcano body, both horizontally and vertically, and also others deformation elements such as; translation, rotation and dilatation. The Mogi modeling was also used to determine the location and volume of the pressure source which caused deformation of volcano body. By comparing seismic activity and the deformation reveal from GPS measurement, before, during and after eruption, it could be understood there is a correlation between the seismicity and its deformation. These studies is hoping that GPS measurement in Papandayan volcano could be one of supported method to determine the volcano activities, at least in Papandayan volcano.

Mariculture (marine aquaculture) has been intensified and has created essential employment opportunities over the last two-decades in Indonesia, as well as many other countries in the world. This development has negative impact to the environment. Considerable amounts of nutrient waste in dissolved and particulate form were released by intensive fish farming into the environment through feed excess, soluble fish excretion and faeces production. One of the first steps to avoid the dangerous environmental impacts is careful site selection to minimize environmental impacts arising from the farming activities (sustainability) as well as to guarantee adequate conditions from the operational point of view (suitability).The paper focuses on the development of a Decision Support System (DSS) as a tool for the appropriate selection of mariculture  site location. The DSS is based on physical, chemical and sediment criteria as well as on data of conflicting coastal use. The GIS analysis results in a map indicating the suitable areas for the improved method of offshore cage mariculture. In this study, emphasis was placed on finfish species; however the methods and results may be employed for other species as well following some modifications.The DSS was applied for the western part of Java Sea, Indonesia. The data were acquired from direct field measurement, numerical modeling and existing information from particular agencies. Numerical modeling was used to obtain spatial and temporal distributions of hydrodynamic parameters (i.e. current velocities and water levels). The Delft3D modeling system (Delft Hydraulics, The Netherlands) was employed for this purpose. The DSS was developed under GIS application of ESRI® ArcGISâ¢Â using weighted overlay method. The results showed the adequacy of the system for supporting governmental authorities in the implementation, environmental controlling, and estimation of overall carrying capacity for environmental sustainable marine fish farming.

The capillary tube is an important control device used in small vapor compression refrigeration systems such as window air-conditioners, household refrigerators and freezers. This paper develops a non-dimensional correlation based on the test results of the adiabatic capillary tube for the mass flow rate through the tube using a hydrocarbon refrigerant mixture of 89.3% propane and 10.7% butane (HCM). The Taguchi method, a statistical experimental design approach, was employed. This approach explores the economic benefit that lies in studies of this nature, where only a small number of experiments are required and yet valid results are obtained. Considering the effects of the capillary tube geometry and the inlet condition of the tube, dimensionless parameters were chosen. The new correlation was also based on the Buckingham Pi theorem. This correlation predicts 86.67% of the present experimental data within a relative deviation of -10% to +10%. The predictions by this correlation were also compared with results in published literature.

Direct Torque Control (DTC) has gained popularity for development of advanced motor control due to its simplicity and offers fast instantaneous torque and flux controls. However, the conventional DTC which is based on hysteresis controller has major drawbacks, namely high torque ripple and variable inverter switching frequency. This paper presents an improved switching strategy for reducing flux and torque ripples in DTC of PMSM drives; wherein the torque hysteresis controller and the look-up table used in the conventional DTC are replaced with a constant frequency torque controller (CFTC) and an optimized look-up table, respectively. It can be shown that a constant switching frequency is established due to the use of the CFTC while the reduction of torque and flux ripples is achieved mainly because of the selection of optimized voltage vector (i.e. with an optimized look-up table). This paper also will explain the construction of DTC schemes implemented using MATLAB-Simulink blocks. Simulation results were shown that a significant reduction of flux and torque ripples which is about 90% can be achieved through the proposed DTC scheme.Â

Results of seismic studies presented in previous publications depict two opposing subducted oceanic lithospheric slabs under the Molucca region. This unique structure is related to the arc-arc collision between the Halmahera and Sangihe arcs. Recently, we have revisited the complex subduction zone structure by employing a non-linear tomographic imaging technique in which 3-D ray tracing has been implemented. We have used P- as well as S-wave arrival times from carefully reprocessed global data set. The results provide some improvements in the positioning of wave-speed anomalies. Consistent with earlier results, the new P-wave model depicts the two opposing subducted slabs of the Molucca Sea plate. The intriguing new observation is that the westward dipping slab appears to penetrate into the lower mantle by taking the form of folded slab. We envisage that the folding behavior may have been caused by the shift of the whole subduction system in the Molucca region toward the Eurasian continent due to the westward thrust of the Pacific plate combined with the large left-lateral movement of the Sorong fault. The inversion of traveltime residuals of direct S phases strongly confirms the new observation.
