Abstract

A theoretical study was conducted to investigate the performance of dimethyl ether (DME) synthesis from coal. This paper presents a model for two-step DME synthesis from brown coal represented by the following processes: drying, gasification, water-gas reaction, acid gas removal, and DME synthesis reactions. The results of the simulation suggest that a feedstock ratio of coal : oxygen : steam of 1 : 0.13 : 0.821 produces the highest DME concentration. The water-gas reactor simulation at a temperature of 400°C and a pressure of 20 bar gave the ratio of H2/CO closest to 2, the optimal value for two-step DME synthesis. As for the DME synthesis reactor simulation, high pressure and low temperature promote a high DME concentration. It is predicted that a temperature of 300°C and a pressure of 140 bar are the optimum conditions for the DME synthesis reaction. This study also showed that the DME concentration produced by the two-step route is higher than that produced by one-step DME synthesis, implying that further improvement and research are needed to apply two-step DME synthesis to production of this liquid fuel.

Abstract

In Malaysia, the car safety level has been elevated through regulations and a consumer-based approach, i.e. the New Car Assessment Program in Southeast Asian Countries (ASEAN NCAP). Nevertheless, the availability of information on consumers' car purchasing decisions towards safety is still limited in Malaysia. Thus, this study was aimed at evaluating consumers' purchasing decisions of their present cars and investigating their awareness of ASEAN NCAP. Self-administered questionnaires were distributed among consumers visiting different car showrooms and dealer shops. The findings suggest that safety was considered as one of the top three factors by the respondents when purchasing their present cars. Awareness of ASEAN NCAP has increased as compared to a previous study. This information is essential for policy makers, manufacturers and other stakeholders to assist in setting priorities with regard to the promotion of car safety in the country.

Abstract

In this paper, a novel analytical technique is proposed to determine the optimal size and location of shunt capacitor units in radial distribution systems. An objective function is formulated to reduce real power loss, to improve thevoltage profile and to increase annual cost savings. A new constant, the Loss Sensitivity Constant (LSC), is proposed here. The value of LSC decides the location and size of candidate buses. The technique is demonstrated on an IEEE-33 bus system at different load levels and the 130-bus distribution system of Jamawa Ramgarh village, Jaipur city. The obtained results are compared with the latest optimization techniques to show the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed technique.

Abstract

In this study a number of seismic behavior factors (overall ductility, response modification, and overstrength) of ordinary moment steel frames with viscoelastic bracing system were evaluated. These factors are not provided for ordinary moment steel frames with viscoelastic bracing system in building seismic codes such as the International Building Code (IBC) or Euro Code (EN). Moreover, similar frames without viscoelastic bracing were assessed and compared as well. A linear history analysis both two types with a different number of stories and span lengths was carried out using different earthquake records, which were selected to include variability in ground motion characteristics. Pushover analysis was then performed after defining the sizes of the elements and assigning material nonlinearity to the discrete hinge where plastic rotation occurs to beams and columns according to FEMA 356. Such analysis allows evaluating the overall ductility and the overstrength of each building of concern by using the yield and ultimate displacements and base shear forces obtained from the pushover curve. The results showed that overall ductility, overstrength, and response modification decreased with an increase of the number of stories for all buildings or when the bay length increased. Adding viscoelastic dampers increased the seismic behavior factors for all buildings significantly.

Abstract

The dual system structure concept has gained popularity in the construction of high-rise buildings over the last decades. Meanwhile, earthquake engineering design provisions for buildings have moved from the uniform hazard concept to the uniform risk concept upon recognizing the uncertainties involved in the earthquake resistance of concrete structures. In this study, a probabilistic model for the evaluation of such risk is proposed for a dual system structure consisting of shear walls or core walls and a moment frame structure as earthquake resistant structure. Uncertainties in the earthquake resistance of the dual system structure due to record-to-record variability, limited amount of data, material variability and structure modeling are included in the formulation by means of the first-order second-moment method. The statistics of resistance against earthquake forces are estimated by making use of incremental nonlinear time history analysis using 10 recorded earthquake histories. Then, adopting the total probability theorem, the reliability of the structure is evaluated through a risk integral scheme by combining the earthquake resistance of the structure with the annual probability of exceedance for a given location where the building is being constructed.

Abstract

This study concerns the improvement and enhancement of the properties of poly(l-lactic acid) (PLLA) through simple solution blending of pure PLLA with different kinds of biodegradable polymers. Synthesized PLLA was blended with synthesized poly(d,l-lactic acid) (PDLLA) or poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) at various composition ratios in a solvent mixture of dichloromethane/ethanol at room temperature to produce dipolymer. The polymer-blend properties were analyzed using FTIR, DSC, UTM data and an enzymatic degradation test was conducted. It was found that PLLA blend films were obtained with limitation of the second polymer content up to 20% (w) through solvent casting. From the DSC data, two different melting temperature peaks showed that stereocomplex formation occurred during polymer precipitation for all PLLA/PDLLA blends, while only one single melting temperature peak appeared in the PLLA/PEG blend. Regarding the mechanical properties, the PLLA/PEG blend showed better performance with an improvement of the mechanical strength by around 11.18% and an improvement of the elongation at break by around 89% compared to pure PLLA. Furthermore, after the 48-hour enzymatic biodegradability test, the PLLA/PEG blends showed improvement of biodegradability with 21.88% of sample weight-loss compared to 2.53% for pure PLLA.

Abstract

Cu/ZnO catalyst was succesfully prepared using a coprecipitation method. The mixing procedure of the Cu(NO3)2, Zn(NO3)2 and Na2CO3 solutions had an important influence on the characteristics of the catalyst. The best catalyst obtained was the one prepared with slow mixing of the salt solutions and a CuO/ZnO molar ratio of 50:50. This raw catalyst had a maximum surface area of about 61.6 m2/g. Increasing the CuO/ZnO molar ratio caused an agglomeration of precipitated particles, reducing the surface area. A much better catalyst was obtained using an impregnation method, in which g-Al2O3 was used as support. The impregnated catalyst had a surface area of about 151 m2/g. Activity tests were carried out in a fixed-bed reactor containing 1 g of catalyst and a flow of syngas at a rate of 60 mL/min. The reaction temperature was 170°C and the pressure was 20 barg. The best coprecipitated catalyst gave a CO conversion of about 10%, while the impregnated catalyst gave a CO conversion of up to 69%.
