The message is then denied by the CEO of Starbucks, Howard Schultz, who said that the rumor that Starbucks or Howard provides financial assistance to the government of Israel or the Israeli army is false. But denial is not fully dampening the negative opinion that had already been circulated previously. The method used in this study is a discourse analysis. Abstract

It is more and more common that tobacco companies in the world and Indonesia are portraying themselves as good corporate citizens and engaging in so-called “corporate social responsibility” activities, such as sponsorship of educational programs, sports events, art and cultural performances, community projects and philanthropy. These ”socially responsible” activities are very effective in improving public perceptions of the tobacco industry, creating good impressions among influential groups such as policy-makers, academicians and journalists/media, and serving as brand loyalty promotion and strengthening corporate reputation. However, these activities are actually intended as corporate political interference to influence members of society, government officials, parliament members, and the judicative judges to influence policy/regulation development and preventing government and parliament not to regulate tobacco use which will reduce their sales. This study will explicate what CSR really is and why tobacco companies’ CSR activities do not meet the criteria of real CSR.

Abstract

This article  emphasizes that  media convergence  possesses real influence in the world. Nowadays, resources such as text, audio, video, pictures, and so forth, can be shared via the media. These multiplatform tools can be easily accessible by the  Internet.  This provides  a  large majority  of people better chance to utilize the tools. The television, as an old media, also borrows or shares the content of the new media as materials for the production. As one of the new media, YouTube provides similar materials as the television. YouTube has a  user-generated content,  which means  any individual may watch, upload, download, or publish videos as long as they have access to the Internet. The old media policy does not only borrows materials from the new media because of the trend only but also because of the economic factor involved. The videos on YouTube can be made with pocket cameras or handphones. This puts YouTube in contrast to the television, which demands the standard camera for program production. Hence, if the television borrows materials from the YouTube, the producer of the television program may cut cost production significantly.

Abstract

The ideal society according to Jürgen Habermas is no longer classless society as idealized by Karl Marx, but a society in which each member could freely talk about their ideas regarding public life, without the fear of being repressed by certain parties. For Habermas, the class struggle is not merely about opposition, but begun by identification instead. This is the root of all Habermas’ ideas of public sphere. This paper will discuss the concept of public sphere in Indonesia, from the New Order era, to Reformation, and finally the digital age.

Abstract

The future of youth in any emerging countries has received attention from various stakeholders, including government, corporations and non-governmental organizations. The reason is that globalization creates competition and that competitiveness does not take a day to build. The concern also arises from regionalization, for example, the upcoming ASEAN Economic Community, whereas all individuals are considered borderless in regards to employment and specifically skills. How can countries, regardless of state-non state organizations empower youth by providing skills development? Accenture and Indonesia Business Links (IBL) – an NGO specifically focus on CSR -- partnered to develop an empowerment model for youth, by using a pilot in Karawang, West Java.  Through a simple survey and focus group discussions with stakeholders, Accenture and IBL produced a model that would be able to facilitate entrepreneurship and employability. Although the finding indicates that employability is still the main concern of youth rather than entrepreneurship, the model can be used as the basis for corporations deciding on which program to focus.
