Abstract

Xenopoecilus sarasinorum is an endemic fish from Lake Lindu; its existence is not widely known. The fish is listed as an endangered fish according to IUCN 1996. One of efforts to conserve the fish is domestication. This study was asmed to determine the growth of X. sarasinorum domesticated with different types of feed. The research was conducted from December 2012 until February 2013 in the Laboratory of Aquaculture, Faculty of Animal Husbandry and Fisheries, Tadulako University Palu. This study used a completely randomized design consisting of three treatments i.e. treatment A (silk worms feeding), treatment B (mosquito larvae feeding), treatment C (blood worms feeding) and six experimental replicates so that there were 18 experimental units. The results showed that the best feed for X. sarasinorum growth was silk worms. The absolute weight gained by the fish wich given silk worms was  0,330 g. Based on the results of analysis of variance (ANOVA) provision of different types of feed that gives a very real effect on the growth of fish biomass X. sarasinorum (P <0,01). Key words : Domestication, endemic fish, Lake Lindu, Xenopoecilus sarasinorum.

Abstract

Research on “determination of AI timewithout estrus synchronization in post partum period beased on estrogen hormone profile and LH in local goat ", is part of the National Strategic Research Grant, which is funded by the University Tadulako in Fiscal Year 2010. The research was done at the Laboratory of Physiology and Reproduction, Faculty of Animal Science, University of Gajah Mada (UGM), Integrated Research and Testing Laboratory  UGM, Laboratory of Obsterics, Department of  Animal Reproductive Medicine, University of Airlangga,  group of Goat farmers in the city of Palu. This study aimed to find solutions to the failure of the AI implementation Central Sulawesi, due to the limitations of frozen sperm, liquid Nitrogen, and the expensiveness of estrus synchronization hormon. Post partum local goatwas used as experimental animal. Blood was taken for  analysis  estrogen and LH hormones  (immunometric assay) in one estrous cycle, namely in 36 -55 days after giving birth. Implementation of the AI (without estru synchronization) was based on the time and the highest concentration of estrogen (1000 ρg / ml, as treatment 1), the concentration of LH surge (160 ηg / ml: treatment 2), and on the first day after the LH surge (as treatment 3), while the implementation of the AI with estrus synchronization was as the control (treatment 0). The AI implementation was done by using liquid sperm of Etawah cros-bred goat  that were prepared with 2.5% tannin (leucocephala) supplementation per ml sperm. Conception rate (conception rate: CR) of AI was calculated based on the percentage of non pregnant femalesd (nonreturn Rate: NRR) of total females artificially inseminated, where the treatment 1 was 20%, 73.3% (treatment 2), 60% (treatment 3), and Control of  86.6%.Key words: Estrogen hormon and LH, Postpartum, AI, estrus synchronization, and local goat.

Abstract

Small islands is an area that is susceptible to various factors. One of the factors influencing the ecological factors. These ecological factors include climate change, sea level rise, natural disasters, abrasion, sedimentation, erosion and pollution. To minimize vulnerability the effectiveness of these coastal ecosystems is urgently needed. This research analyze vulnerability of small island, mangrove ecosystem effectiveness and management strategy of mangrove ecosystem based mitigation. This research use both primary and secondary data primer data was gathered by sampling, field observation, and questioner analysis Vulnerability index was analyzed using multi dimensional scaling method whereas vulnerability mapping was analyzed by analysis of geographic information system using the software Archive project 3.3. Stakeholders analysis was used for patterns and strategic management, through a technique SMART (Simple multi attribute rating technique) using the software Criterium decision plus. The results from this research are Bunaken Island have the highest vulnerability level, followed by the island of Manado Tua, Nain and the lowest Mantehage island. The main factors of vulnerability in small island Bunaken National Park  is the area of mangrove ecosystems. Increased area of mangrove ecosystems will increase the effectiveness of mangrove ecosystems as a buffer zone as well as increase the capacity of these ecosystems on the social, economic, and governance dimension. Management scheme which can accommodate a variety of problems faced by the mangrove ecosystem of small islands is collaborative management by the government as the leading sector, with the highest priority on the management of the ecological dimension. Key words : Management, Mangrove ecosystem, mitigation, small island.

Abstract

Study on habitat, distribution and size structure of opudi (Telmatherina antoniae) was carried out in Lake Matano, South Sulawesi from September 2010 to August 2011. Habitat was described based on underwater observations. Fish collections were accomplished monthly by using beach seine. The fish was distributed throughout littoral areas within clear water. The observed habitat ranged between sandy, cobbles to bouldery bottom substrate. Some parts of habitat had less vegetation and the others did not. Fish collected during the study were 2707 individuals, in which 53.08% of them were males and the remains were females. The individuals had standard length (SL) ranged between 32.76 and 85.67 mm. Male specimens were dominated by individuals ranged between 41.58 and 54.80 mm (78.98% of total male specimens). Female specimens were dominated by individuals ranged between 37.17 and 54.80 (87.80% of total female specimens). Both male and female individuals were dominated by large size classes.Key words: Distribution, habitat, size structure, Telmatherina antoniae.
