Abstract

Pipe bends or elbows are of important component in a piping system. In addition to its function for changing the direction of piping due to layout restriction, an elbow can accommodate expansion because it is more flexible than an equivalent straight pipe with the same material and dimension. However, and elbow can not be analyzed using the engineer theory of bending, because its cross-section become oval under bending. This paper reports a result of finite element study of bending behavior of a pipe elbow and its influence on limit moment. Limit moment was obtained using nonlinear analysis and Newton-Raphson algorithm was employed. Material behavior of pipe was treated as large strain, elastic-perfectly-plastic. The results show that a pipe elbow under in-plane opening bending is stiffer than those under in-plane closing bending, indicated by their limit load – 4.83 times yield stress for in-plane opening bending and 1.34 times the yield stress for in-plane closing bending. Keywords: pipe elbow, limit moment, nonlinear analysis, in-plane bending

Abstract

The objective of the research is to investigate the effect of  hard chrome electroplating on low carbon steel surface characteristic. This experimental research used low carbon steel as  material  that has been coated by hard chrome electroplating,  chromium powder, and Pb alloy as cathode.  The instrument for the research were rectifier, hardness testing machine LECO M-400-H1, optical microscope and  digital camera. This research had been performed by making variation of current ((15 A/dm2, 30 A/dm2, 45 A/dm2 and  60 A/dm2).The result of this research shows that the maximum hardness of low carbon steel after coated by hard chrome electroplating was 576,50 VHN, when hard chrome electroplating had been performed on current 45 A/dm2. Beside that, on the same current (45 A/dm2) also gained maximum chrome layer (38,65 µm).Keywords: low carbon steel, hard chrome electroplating, hardness,  deep of coated.

Abstract

Lingkup penggunaan teknik pengelasan dalam kontruksi sangat luas, meliputi perkapalan, jembatan, rangka baja, bejana tekan, pipa pesat, pipa saluran, kendaraan rel dan lain sebagainya. Selain untuk pembuatan, proses pengelasan juga digunakan untuk reparasi atau perbaikan. Posisi atau sikap pengelasan yaitu pengaturan posisi atau letak gerakan elektroda las. Posisi pengealasan yang digunakan biasanya tergantung dari letak kampuh-kampuh atau celah-celah benda kerja yang akan dilas.Studi yang dilakukan ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui perbedaan mutu pada setiap posisi pengelasan (down hand position, horizontal position, vertical position, over head position) pada sambungan las butt weld joint, agar dapat memperbaiki kekuatan dari hasil sambungan lasnya.Baja yang digunakan yaitu baja karbon sedang (AISI 1045) dan empat posisi pegelasan yaitu down hand position, horizontal position, vertical position, dan over head position. Pengelasan dilakukan dengan las SMAW dengan menggunakan kampuh single V, single U dan single J serta lapisan las sebanyak 3 lapis (single V, single U dan single J) dan 4 lapis (single V dan single U). Ukuran spesimen uji tarik sesuai standar ASTM E-8 tahun 2004. Dari data hasil pengujian diperoleh nilai rata-rata kekuatan tarik pada semua kampuh las dengan lapisan las sebanyak tiga lapis yang tertinggi yaitu pada pengelasan down hand position kemudian vertical position dan horizontal position dan rata-rata kekuatan tarik terendah yaitu pada pengelasan over head position. Kekuatan tarik dari pengelasan horizontal position dapat diperbaiki dengan memperbanyak lapisan las agar semua kampuh dapat terisi penuh. Sedangkan untuk memperbaiki nilai kekuatan tarik pada pengelasan over head position dapat mengguanakan kampuh las yang lebih luah serta memperbanyak lapisan las agar semua kampuh las terisi penuh.Kata kunci: posisi pengelasan, butt weld joint, baja AISI 1045

Abstract

Limbah batubara yang dihasilkan oleh sisa pembakaran di industri yang menggunakan boiler belum termanfaatkan secara maksimal untuk menjadi bahan yang lebih bernilai ekonomi, Pada saat ini ada beberapa industri semen yang memanfaatkan hasil lebih batubara sebagai campuran semen yang dikenal dengan istilah semen komposit. Pada penelitian ini mencoba memanfaatkan limbah batubara untuk alternatif pembuatan bahan komposit yang lain yang merupakan campuran bahan resin dan limbah batubara. Hasil bahan komposit sebelum dimanfaatkan untuk aplikasi yang lain diuji sifat mekaniknya untuk mendapatkan komposisi yang terbaik dari campuran resin dan limbah batubara. Pengujain mekanik yang dilakukan adalah uji tarik, uji bending dan uji kekerasan. Dari hasil pengujian mekanik yang dilakukan didapatkan komposisi campuaran yang terbaik antara limbah batu bara dan resin adalah pada komposisi 40 % : 60%. Hasil kekuatan tarik terbesar didapatkan 10,27 N/mm2, kekuatan bending terbesar 16,67 N/mm2 dan kekerasan tertinggi adalah 60, 4 HRL. Dari hasil distribusi uji kekerasan komposisi antara limbah batu bara dan resin pada campuran 40 % : 60% terlihat lebih merata dibandingkan komposisi yang lain.Keywords: Limbah batubara, Bahan Komposit, Pengujian Sifat Mekanik

Abstract

This work is focused on the study of the effect of spindle speed and feed rate on the tool temperature distribution in the drilling of AISI-1045 steel. The e data were collected under different cutting conditions. The maximum tool temperature is predicted during the drilling using finite element simulation techniques. The predicted temperature was compared to the measured temperature. The result shows the finite element simulation is reasonable.  Analyses show that the range of temperature from 157 °C to 288 °C. The difference between measured temperature and simulated temperature are in the range of 17-38%. Abstract

The present study concerns the review and the analysis of malfunctions characteristic and the reasons of moving blade damage. Such malfunctions are breakage of moving blade in excessive temperature conditions, increasing vibration, little cyclic weariness from frequent heat exchange at start-up and shut-down, and erosive deterioration and highly temperature corrosion. The type of damage can be divided on static, fatigue, thermal fatigue, corrosion and erosive.Keywords: gas turbine, moving blade, pressure, temperature, defect.

Abstract

Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DFMA) technique has been utilized intensively in industry for many years in order to increase the quality, decrease the cost and shorten the cycle time of a product. This  paper is a detail application of the technique in the pneumatic piston product. Abstract

The influence of static contact angle on the spreading of droplet on a heated solid surface has been studied experimentally. Static contact angle was important parameter which influenced the impact behavior and heat transfer during the interaction of droplet and solid surface. Droplet substance was destilated water with initial diameter of 2.5 mm and solid surface material was stainless steel. Impact energy was expressed in Weber number, they were 52.1 and 57.7. Solid surface temperature was varied from 60−285°C to cover the heat transfer regimes, they were single-phase liquid, nucleate boiling, transition boiling, and film boiling. Static contact angle were 0°, 35.04°, and 85.72°.           As result, it was known that static contact angle has influence on spread characteristic after droplet impacting solid surface. Spreading factor increases due to the decrease of static contact angle. Abstract

This research was conducted to investigate the characteristics of heat transfer and pressure drop as well as the thermal performance of diamond pin fin array in the rectangular channel which air was passed through it as coolant fluid. The pin fins were arranged in inline manner. Dimension of base plate in which pin fins attached was 150 mm x 200 mm x 6.5 mm. The average temperature of base plate surface was kept constant at 60oC. Pin fins were made of duralumin having the dimension of  75 mm of height, its sides 12.7 and 12.7 mm respectively, and the distance inter-fin picth in the spanwise direction was kept constant at Sx/D = 2.95. The parameters of this research were Reynolds number (Re) 3,123 – 37,847 based on averaged inlet air velocity and hydraulic diameter, and the distance between the inter-fin pitch in the streamwise direction (Sy/D = 1.97 – 3.94). The research result  shown that increasing Reynolds and decreasing the distance Sy/D increased Nusselt number, that means increased heat transfer rate where it reach maximum at Sy/D = 2.36. The values of pressure drop (DP) and friction factor (f) decreased with increasing Sy/D. The value of the thermal performances (h) varied between 0.77 – 1.22. At Sy/D = 1.97 for Re > 25,000, and Sy/D = 3.94 for all values of Re, the values of h were less than 1, i.e. the used of diamond pin fin would cause an energy loss rather than gain. The net energy gain (h was greater than 1) was only at Sy/D = 1.97 for Re < 18,830, Sy/D = 2.36 for Re < 25,000 and at Sy/D = 2,95 for Re < 3,150. Increasing Reynolds number would decrease the thermal performance (h) for all Sy/D. A net energy gain up to 22% was achieved for Sy/D = 2.36 and Re = 3,123. Keywords: diamond pin fin, Reynolds number, friction factor, thermal performance
