Abstract

Tooth extraction can cause alveolar ridge resorption that affect the use of the denture, so it requires augmentation to improve the contour of the alveolar ridge. Hydroxyapatite is used as alveolar ridge augmentation material in Indonesia, they are imported at high prices and availability limited. In Indonesia, especially the area of East Java Jember district Puger produced natural gypsum raw materials that can be developed and utilized as hydroxyapatite. This study aims to determine how the process of synthesis and characterization Hydoxyapatit using FTIR XRD analysis of Gypsum Puger Jember as alveolar ridge augmentation material. Methods of synthesis of hydroxyapatite research conducted by hydrothermal technique by reaction between gypsum hydroxyapatite Puger with DHP (diammonium hydrogen phosphate), then the result of the reaction was analyzed by XRD and FTIR testing compared with HA 200 Japan as a comparison. The results of the analysis we found the same patterns between Gypsum hydroxyapatite Puger with HA 200 Japan as standard. Conclusion The study has managed to synthesize gypsum puger into hydroxyapatite / Puger gypsum hydroxyapatite (HAGP). Characterization HAGP performed by XRD and FTIR that test results are the same, or there is a similar pattern with HA 200 Japan (standard), so HAGP is one of the bioceramics materials that can be used as an alternative material alveolar ridge augmentation in order to use denture can be managed properly.

Abstract

A new chalcone derivate named 3-(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)-1-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-2-propen-1-one has been synthesized. 4-hydroxyacetophenone and 3,4-dimethoxybenzaldehyde was mixtured to produce this compound by Claisen-Schmidt condensation. IR and 1H-NMR spectra was used to elucidate the compound structure. The purity of the compound was identified by TLC that showed only one spot and a narrow melting point. Thus, this compound was evaluated for the antioxidant activity by DPPH method and the result showed that IC50 is 318,2 ppm, lower than vitamin C as the standard.

Abstract

A new compound from chalcone derivate has been synthesized from 4-methylacetophenone and 3,4-dimethoxybenzaldehyde by Claisen-Schmidt condensation with catalyst of NaOH 60%. This compound is 3-(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)-1-(4-methylphenyl)-2-propen-1-one. Structureelucidation was conducted by FTIR and 1H-NMR analysis. The compound is relatively pure and this can be identified by only one spot on TLC analysis and the range of melting point is narrow. Antioxidant activity evaluation of the compound with DPPH method showed that IC50 is 455.312 ppm, lower than vitamin C as the standard.

Abstract

Drugs and health storage are components of public health services included dental health service in public health center and hospital. Public health center consider root canal treatment and medicament that used for that treatment. The objective of this study was to know treatment of pulp gangrene in four public health centers and a hospital. This study was descriptive observational   with cross sectional method. Population of this study was patients who diagnosed pulp gangrene in four public health center and a hospital on Juli to Agustus 2013.  This study used probability sampling for taking samples in population continued simple random sampling. The result showed the treatments of pulp gangrene were medication, extraction, and sterilization. Treatment in public health center focused in preventive treatment.

Abstract

Oral cavity diseases can be caused by the oral microbes  such as Streptococcus mutans, Porphyromonas gingivalis and Candida albicans. The oral microbes growth can be inhibited by chlorhexidine gluconate mouthwash, but its long term use have adverse effects, therefore it is important to do a further research to find effective antibacterial and antifungal as alternative substance mouthwash. Flavonoid compounds in tobacco leaf have potential as an antibacterial and antifungal. The objective was to analyze the inhibition effect of tobacco leaf extract to the growth of Streptococcus mutans, Porphyromonas Gingivalis and Candida albicans. This research used 20%, 40%, 60%, 80% and 100% ethanol extract of tobaco leaf,  1% DMSO as negative control and 0.2% chlorhexidine gluconate as positive control. Antibacterial and antifungal activities were tested by diffusion disc method with four repetitions. The observation was conducted by measuring the diameter of inhibition zone after incubating for 24 and 48 hours. The largest inhibition zone of Streptococcus mutans growth were producted by ethanol extract of tobacco leaf with 80% concentration, the largest inhibition zone on Porphyromonas gingivalis and Candida albicans growth were produced by ethanol extract of tobaco leaf with 100% concentration. Diameter of inhibition zone ethanol extract of tobacco leaf was equal with the diameter of inhibition zone of 0.2 % chlorhexidine gluconate. The conclusion described that ethanol extract of tobacco leaf can inhibit the growth of Streptococcus mutans, Porphyromonas gingivalis and Candida albicans.
