Abstract

Technological advances in the era of Learning Society 5.0 encourage the birth of innovation in education. One of them is Internet of Things (IoT) based learning media. This study aims to develop Internet of Things-based learning media with a STEAM approach to biotechnology material to improve problem-solving and collaboration skills in grade IX students. This type of research is educational design research using the ADDIE development model with stages of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. At the needs analysis stage, it was revealed that students needed learning media that had an attractive visual appearance and could be used anywhere. At the design and development stage, learning media was produced that was integrated with hydroponic devices directly through the Internet of Things. The product feasibility test was carried out by 3 material experts with an average score of 97.12% and 3 media experts with an average score of 89%. Based on the feasibility test, it is known that the learning media is very feasible to use. Educators and students evaluated the readability test and gave scores of 94.6 and 93.7 respectively, indicating that the learning media can be used as a biology learning medium. The results of the MANOVA test showed that the use of Internet of Things-based learning media with the STEAM approach successfully improved students' problem-solving and collaboration skills. Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that Internet of Things-based learning media with the STEAM approach can be developed and is suitable as a learning medium for biotechnology materials, and is quite effective in improving students' problem-solving and collaboration skills.

Abstract

Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) serves as a key accelerator for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), emphasizing systems thinking as an essential competency that must be cultivated in the learning process. This study investigates students' systems thinking skills within the ESD framework through assessments on environmental change—one of the core topics in biology education. Systems thinking enables students to analyze complex real-world phenomena by examining the interactions among system components and their role in forming an integrated whole. This descriptive quantitative study involved sixty 10th-grade students who were assessed using twelve essay questions, each designed to evaluate specific indicators of systems thinking within the ESD context. Data were analyzed using Rasch modeling in Winsteps, focusing on student ability levels, item validity, reliability, and Differential Item Functioning (DIF). Results indicated high item reliability, yet most students demonstrated pre-aware or emerging levels of systems thinking, particularly in identifying system components, recognizing interconnections, and applying systems thinking to sustainability issues. The low Person Measure Average suggests a pressing need for instructional improvements to strengthen students' systems thinking competencies. These findings underscore the necessity of integrating systems thinking into curricula to better prepare students for addressing sustainability challenges effectively.

Abstract

The problem-based learning (PBL) model consists of five steps: orienting students to the problem, organizing work, guiding investigations, compiling work and presenting it, and evaluating the process and results. However, many teachers have not implemented the first and second steps properly, so that the goal of developing students' critical and creative thinking is not achieved. This study aims to develop a problem orientation and work organization model in PBL. This study uses the ADDIE model (Analysis, Design, Develop, Implementation, and Evaluation). The results of the analysis show that teachers still have difficulty in implementing PBL steps and need more operational guidance. The model developed includes systematic steps to formulate problems and organize student work to be more effective. The validation results show that this model is valid and has been tested practically, with positive responses from teachers to its implementation. This guide can improve the effectiveness of PBL teaching, ensure its implementation is in accordance with the correct concept, and minimize errors in learning practices.

Abstract

The 21st century education requires students to master the skills of Social Culture Awareness (SCA) and critical thinking, but the lack of use of local wisdom-based teaching materials is an obstacle in its achievement. This study aims to determine the validity and practicality of ecosystem e-modules integrated with local wisdom to improve students' SCA (Social Cultural Awareness) and critical thinking skills. The study was place at SMA Negeri 12 Pekanbaru and the Riau University Postgraduate Campus. Research and development refer to this specific kind of study.  The three phases of the ADDIE model—analysis, design, and development—form the basis of the chosen research methodology.  Questionnaires designed to assess feasibility and validity were used as data collecting tools.  findings from the e-module practicality test by instructors, the one-to-one test, and the small-scale test all came out with very practical ratings of 98.72%, 95.85%, and 98.61%, respectively, while the validation findings came out with a highly valid category score of 93.71%.  Based on these findings, the created e-module is a great tool for enhancing students' SCA and critical thinking abilities. E-Modules are recommended as alternative teaching materials that can support the development of students' SCA and critical thinking skills, as well as strengthen learning rooted in local wisdom.

Abstract

Challenges are inevitably present in every classroom, affecting teachers and students. Students are confronted with struggles in learning complex biology concepts that compel teachers to be resourceful and creative in providing positive learning environments, including the provision of effective learning materials that aid in the student’s mastery of learning competencies. This study was conducted to determine the effectiveness of the game-based strategy using the Genomequest in teaching protein synthesis. Quasi-experimental design was utilized specifically through pre-post testing in experimental and control groups and considering students’ level of satisfaction using the survey questionnaires. Results revealed that the board game utilized as an intervention was effective in learning protein synthesis. This was confirmed by the student’s level of satisfaction with their experiences. They enjoyed the collaborative activities included in the board game while learning the concept. Recommendations were made specifically on some of the parameters of the board game for more improved design and mechanics, for future implementation of the Genomequest in biology class, and considerations for future research.

Abstract

The Teaching Practitioner program is a key component of the Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM/Independent Learning Independent Campus) policy, a new educational initiative in Indonesia. This program aims to enhance graduates' competencies, including hard and soft skills, to strengthen their competitiveness in the era of globalization. Through this program, industry practitioners collaborate with lecturers to teach students in joint classes, providing real-world perspectives. This study aims to explore the role of teaching practitioners in improving students’ learning outcomes in the AMDAL (Analisis Mengenai Dampak Lingkungan Hidup/Environmental Impact Analysis) course, using a descriptive qualitative approach. The results indicate that the students’ mastery index (P = 0.86 ≥ 0.85) and classical mastery index (P = 1.00 ≥ 0.85) both meet the “good” category, demonstrating academic achievement. Additionally, students’ learning interest (mean = 3.58) and motivation (mean = 3.84) also fall into the “good” category. These findings suggest that teaching practitioners effectively improve students' academic performance, learning interest, and motivation. Therefore, this program should be continuously supported and expanded to sustain educational quality and produce graduates with strong expertise in various fields, especially those related to science and environmental studies.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to determine the relationship between learning models Project-Based Learning (PjBL) and the local potential of South Tapanuli for positive attitudes and critical thinking skills of students. The research method uses Systematic Literature Review (SLR) assisted by Google Scholar and Publish or Peris, with data analysis techniques using PRISMA. The conclusion from SLR, research using all variables has never been studied. However, PjBL in the learning process, based on previous research, has several advantages, such as increasing students' positive attitudes, students' learning motivation, increasing students' ability to learn cooperatively and collaboratively, increasing students' creativity, increasing students' academic abilities, improving students' communication skills. Because students are required to work with other people, improve problem solving abilities, management abilities, and the ability to coordinate learning resources, as well as creating a pleasant learning environment. The implications of this research emphasize the importance of utilizing local resources in learning to foster engagement and high-level thinking skills in students.

Abstract

Learning is a continuous process involving teachers, students, materials, and the environment to achieve specific goals. One important aspect of learning is the use of learning media. This study develops a learning media in the form of a magazine on the human circulatory system and an inventory of antihypertensive medicinal plants in Sari Makmur Village, Tekarang District, Sambas Regency. The magazine aims to enhance students' understanding and awareness of the potential of their surrounding environment. This study aims to evaluate the feasibility of the magazine as a learning media. The method used is research and development (R&D) with a qualitative approach, referring to Sugiyono's model, which includes five stages: identification of potential and problems, data collection, product design, design validation, and design revision. The validation of the magazine was carried out by five biology and learning media experts, based on aspects of presentation, content, and language. The results of the validation using the Content Validity Ratio (CVR) and Content Validity Index (CVI) showed a value of 1.00 in all aspects. The reliability test with the Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC) yielded a value of 0.841, which is categorized as excellent. Therefore, the developed magazine is declared valid and feasible to be used as a learning media.

Abstract

Botanical literacy is an important competency preservice biology teachers must have to support contextual and sustainability-oriented science learning. This study aims to describe the profile and views of botanical literacy of preservice biology teacher students in their final year of study. The study was conducted at one of the state Islamic universities in Central Java, involving 33 students who had completed all pedagogical and biological science courses. The approach used in this study was mixed methods with an explanatory design. The type of research used was a survey. Data collection began with a test to measure students' botanical literacy skills and a validated questionnaire to explore their views on the importance of botanical literacy and how they would teach it as teachers. Furthermore, semi-structured interviews were conducted to obtain in-depth information about preservice biology teacher students' views on botanical literacy. The results showed that students had good results in the indicators of reading graphs and concluding based on data but were weak in the indicators of evaluating the validity of sources and recognising valid scientific arguments. In addition, students showed positive views on the importance of botanical literacy in increasing ecological awareness and the role of teachers in building students' awareness of botanical literacy. The results of this study indicate that it is important to develop biological literacy, especially botany, of preservice teacher students, considering that Indonesia has high plant diversity.

Abstract

Biology interest is a defining characteristic that shapes the identity of biology teachers and guides their pedagogical decision-making in the classroom. Recognizing the importance of this attribute in both current and prospective biology teachers, this study aimed to develop and validate the Biology Interest Instrument (BII) to support the sustainability of professional teacher education. The BII was designed to capture five core dimensions: approaches to learning biology, application of biology instruction, assessment practices, teacher characteristics, learning environment, and the nature of the biology curriculum. The development process involved input from biology education experts across 11 Indonesian institutions through focus group discussions. To assess the instrument’s validity and reliability, data were collected from 855 prospective biology teachers and analyzed using exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). The final instrument comprises 32 items across five dimensions, all demonstrating acceptable psychometric properties. The BII is recommended for use in teacher education programs, particularly in Indonesia and other developing countries, to identify and foster biology interest in future educators.
