Abstract

This paper, uNew South Asian-American Fiction: Emergence of a New Genre?" focuses on a group of emerging South Asian-American novelists in the last decade, who give a new consciousness to fiction. With their multicultural, multireligious, multilingual and multiethnic traditions, the newly discovered writers settled in America are growing fast with new identity. Gifted with tremendous creative eneTgY, they seize and give artistic shape to experiences in America. Enjoying a certain degree of critical contributions, their writings, as a distinct area of literary study, are unlike the other migrant ones which mostly have reflected the angst and trauma of the 'Nowhere man '. Their fictional writings have acquired a shape of spiritual quest that yields eventually towards a sense of equilibrium, establishing the in-between space as one of creativity, enrichment, and survival. The paper tries to show how the current crop of the South Asian writers in America creates a literary tradition that is formally and thematically different with a special reference to Manil Suri's The Death of VIShnu. With a spirit of religious revivalism, they try to re-make themselves in writing a new genre and new form beingforged. Their individual styles, new idioms, and diversity of thematic patterns also point to the changing complexions of lndianAmerican Literature.

Abstract

The purpose of the paper is to reveal a key issue of multilingual classroom i.e. anxiety. When the teacher is mono-or bi-lingual and learners are multilingual then anxiety level of students is very high which creates threatened, de-motivated, and hold-back attitude among students for learning. As a result, such multilingual classroom is nothing more than a prison for learners which blatantly impairs learning and hampers open communication between teacher and student, who belong to diverse lingual background. Therefore, the paper suggests a strategy acronym as OBWMC (Off and on throwing Basic Words in Multilingual Classrooms). The strategy invites instructor to learn some basic 20-25 words of the learners' mother tongue. In a multilingual classroom mere knowing 20-25 words of students' mother tongue can infuse interest among learners towards language learning, lowers the affectivefilter and bolsters learner's self-esteem. Moreover, it also increases respect for other languages and dispel monotony of monolingual classrooms.

Abstract

The literature of post colonialism is a literature of marginality and liminality, portraying characters caught between one culture and another. The work represents a deep cultural conflict in the mind of an American who is from mixed ancestry. Ethnic nationalism and the recovery of traditional culture a classic formulation: A group withdraws into itself and labels the historically oppressive culture as the enemy. The nation or group feels that its social oppression is inextricably tied with the destruction of its traditional culture. To recover an aspect o/the suppressed culture - even as fantasy - can be an act not only 0/ revival but of subversion, a way of reifying the oppressed group~ sense o/separateness and entitlement.

Abstract

One of the most important uses of technology is that it makes it easy for instructors to incorporate multimedia into their teaching. There are different multimedia tools. Three of the most popular ones are visual, auditory, and kinaesthetic in which students take in information. Some students are visual learners, while others are auditory or kinaesthetic learners. While students use all of their senses to take in information, they seem to have preferences in how they learn best. In order to help students learn, teachers need to teach as many of these preferences as possible. Therefore, teachers can incorporate these multimedia tools in their curriculum activities so that students are able to succeed in their classes. This study is an analysis of multimedia tools for Iranian EFL students. Over 100 students complete a questionnaire to determine if their multimedia tools are auditory, visual, or kinaesthetic. The purpose of this study is to increase faculty awareness and understanding of the impact of multimedia tools on the teaching process. A review of the literature along with analysis of the data will determine how multimedia tools affect the teachingprocess.

Abstract

Few days before I had my thesis examination, I met my Professor. He offered me to type some manuscripts to be published in a book. With pleasure, I accepted his offer. By the time I read the manuscripts, I got lots of information about English Language Teaching in Indonesia. Finally, the time comes; and the manuscripts are compiled into a book entitled "The Teaching of English as a Foreign Language in Indonesia." This book is actually a compilation of manuscripts written by Bambang Yudi Cahyono and Utami Widiati, two professors at English Department of State University of Malang. There are 9 chapters in this book in which the content is about English Language Teaching in the Indonesian context. Therefore, in this review, I will discuss the contents of the book, as well as highlight the benefits of this book related to English Language Teaching in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study discusses the rhetoricalfeatures ofBarack Obama's and Hillary Clinton's debates. This debate was carried out during the Democratic campaign period on American presidential election in 2008. The main focus of this dissertation is on the examination of the patterns of Communicative purposes or 'moves' and their subsequent elements or 'steps' of the arguments. The analysis includes the examination of communicative purposes and persuasive values of the texts, and linguistic features used to materialise the communicative purposes and persuasive values. The problem statements of the study are: 1/ What are the rhetorical features realized in Barack Obama's and Hillary Clinton's debates during Campaign Period on American Presidential Election in 2008?, 21 From the rhetoricalfeatures perspective, how can Barack Obama's and Hillary Clinton's debates attract the audience?, 3/ Pedagogically, what lessons can language learners obtain from the debate between Obama and Hillary Clinton? This study found that macro rhetorical structure of the debate (ie. Initiation, Response, and Feedback) is relatively similar to that of a common debate except that, unlike in common debate, the Initiation is given by moderators and questioners, the Responses given by debaters, and Feedback can be given by moderator, questioner, or debaters. In this debate, there is no interruption while the debater was speaking. The debater would speak only if he/she was given an opportunity to speak. And the other difference from the common debate is that Barack Obama's and Hillary Clinton's debates had already been designed by the Dream Team before the debate occured. However, the communicative purposes and persuasions in the debates are relatively the same. The debaters persuade the audience to give them votes in the American presidential election in 2008. The differences are found in the way that rhetorical devicess use linguistic resources to realize the communicative purposes and persuations in the arguments. The rhetorical differences are caused by the differences in the arguments of offering the approaches to solve the Americans' problems. The pedagogical implication of this study is that the debate genre needs to be explicitly taught to Indonesian students, especially university students in order to give them more acces to the content of debate, and to develop skills needed by Indonesian lecturers. For this purpose, an appropriate approach needs to be developed; that is to teach the generic features of debate such as in speaking.
