Abstract

Kata-kata kunci: partisipasi kelas, kegiatan berbicara, teknik drama Abstract Many a times the teaching of English language falls short of fulfilling its goals. Even after years of English teaching, the learners do not gain the confidence of using the language in and outside the class. Real communication involves ideas, emotions, feelings, appropriateness and adaptability. The conventional English class hardly gives the learners an opportunity to use language in this manner and develop fluency in it. Thus, the main purpose of the language teaching course, i.e., developing skills in communication, is unfortunately, neglected. An attractive alternative is teaching language through drama because drama provides practical knowledge of the expressive and communicative powers of a language. In other word, it integrates verbal and non-verbal aspects of communication, thus bringing together both mind and body, and restoring the balance between physical and intellectual aspects of learning. Furthermore, it fosters self-awareness (and awareness of others), self-esteem and confidence; and through this, motivation is developed. This article is aimed to look at the drama techniques and their activities that can motivate students to speak. Keywords: class participation, speaking activities, drama technique

Abstract

One of the 4C skills required by the students in today’s global community is critical thinking. Critical thinking skill is not a skill that can evolve by itself along with the development of human body. Accordingly, it requires creativity on teachers’ side. The teacher can consider strategies and methods that can enhance students’ thinking ability. One of the strategies used by the teacher in teaching language to enhance learners’ critical thinking is internet-based nature of Google docs, an online application that can enrich learning environment by transferring teaching instruments that are user-centered. The objectives of this study are to identify the learning activities designed by the teacher to develop critical thinking; and describe the activities that expose the skill and to know the students’ responses toward the activities of teaching English with Google docs. This study employed descriptive qualitative method. The subjects consisted of an English teacher and 24 senior high school students in Malang. The instruments used included observation and open-ended questionnaire. The result of the analysis indicates that the English teacher designed the learning activities consisting of three main parts:  a) pre-teaching  that focuses on the orientation and registration of students to use email or user account to access to Google App; b) during teaching which focuses on students’ engagement of remembering, understanding, applying, analyzing, evaluating, and creating; and c) post-teaching  which includes sharing and providing students with opportunities to receive immediate feedback on their work. Meanwhile, the learning activities to develop students’ critical thinking not only refer to the teaching of English skills and those of language components but also integrating literary texts with answering effective questions. The students have positive responses toward the activities and they feel comfortable using technology as a medium to learn. Furthermore, they expect technology to be used in classroom as they completely adopted it in their lives. Keywords: Teaching English; critical thinking; Google docs

Abstract

In this global era, due to the growth of science, information, technology, and other people needs, translation becomes necessary in rendering information between languages. However, the process of translating is not as simple as switching the meaning of word for word based on the literal context.Idioms are one of the most problematical components of language. Idioms cannot be easily translated because of their unpredictable meaning and grammar. The purpose of this study is to find out; (1) the idiomatic expressions which are found in Indonesian Legends, (2) the meaning of the idiomatic expressions found in Indonesian Legends, and (3) the various strategies which are used in translating idioms in Indonesia into English found in Indonesian Legends. The descriptive qualitative research design, in the form of document analysis, was employed in this study. The instruments to collect the data were documents and expert opinion. Moreover, the documents consisted of the Bahasa Indonesia (Source Text) and English (Target Text) translation versions of five Indonesian Legends, namely; Batu Kuwung, Batu Menangis, Gunung Merapi, Tangkuban Perahu and Candi Prambanan. This study revealed that idiomatic expression translation strategy by paraphrasingwas the most dominant strategy used by the translator in translating the idiomatic expressions found in five Indonesian Legends (eleven out of eighteen cases). Meanwhile, the second most common strategy was translating by omission (six out of eighteen cases).  The last was the strategy of using an idiom of similar meaning and form which only one out of eighteen cases. Thus, it can be concluded that the translator only applied three strategies out of the main five strategies of translating idiomatic expression suggested by Baker.
