Abstract

This paper aims to investigate the association between intellectual capital, research and development, and firm financial performance in an emerging market context, which is ASEAN. The effect of Intellectual Capital and Research and Development Intensity towards firm financial performance is examined while testing the moderating role of research and development on the relationship between intellectual capital and firm financial performance. Panel data regression model analysis is used for a sample of non-financial companies in ASEAN countries, namely Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, and Singapore during 2015-2017. The final sample used in this study consists of a total of 383 observations. The results showed that intellectual capital has a positive effect on firm financial performance. This result indicates that intellectual capital can generate higher financial performance for the firms. A similar result also found in the relationship between research and development intensity and firm financial performance. Meanwhile, research and development are proved to be able to moderate the positive relationship between intellectual capital and firm financial performance. This result means that if the companies could facilitate their intellectual capital by giving more intensity of research and development, intellectual capital will be generated even more performance for the firms. This result implies that firms should utilize and maintain intellectual capital together with research and development

The evidence supports that all hypotheses suggesting that price limit may be effective to reduce volatility.

Abstract

Research Aims: This study aims to examine, understand, and prove the embodiment of Islamic values in the annual report of Sharia Banks. The results of this study are expected to provide information or data to all parties regarding the layout and Islamic values in the Sharia Banks' annual report, which can be a form of a real differentiator between Sharia Banks and conventional banks if viewed in terms of the content of the annual report.Design/Methodology/Approach: The interpretive method in this study is suitable for research purposes that are not intended to perform hypothesis testing but to do an interpretation of research data. The interpretive method used in this research is to analyze the data by using semiotic analysis. Differential semiotic analysis is an analysis of data that focuses on meaning and sign. Semiotic analysis of the annual sharia bank report is carried out on the narrative texts on the annual report. Semiotic analysis in this study is based on Charles Sanders Pierce's semiotic analysis which uses the triangles of meaning.Research findings: The results of the study showed that the annual reports of Muamalat Bank from 2012 to 2016 had indicated Islamic values. Islamic values were found most frequently in the annual report of Muamalat Bank from 2014 to 2016. The Islamic values in the annual reports of Muamalat Bank were included in the Sharia Supervisory Board Report, the Board of Commissioner Report, the Board of Directors, corporate governance information, and information related to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). Thus, the presence of Islamic values in the annual reports of Muamalat Bank can create the sharia value added to the company.Theoretical contribution/Originality: The results of this study have contributed to the application of the Shari'ah Enterprise Theory (SET) theory. The existence of the application of Islamic values in the financial statements of Bank Muamalat shows that Bank Muamalat is not only responsible for its business activities to humans (investors) but also to God.Practitioner/Policy implication: The results of this study indicate that Bank Muamalat must continue to maintain the existence of Islamic values in operational activities that are presented in its annual report. This is due to the fact that Bank Muamalat's operational activities are truly in accordance with Islamic law.Research limitation/Implication: The Islamic values were found most frequently in the annual reports of Muamalat Bank from 2014 to 2016. A good practice of Islamic values is finally expected to result in the meaningful added value of sharia. The limitations in this article that are the number of the theory and methodologies related to the phenomenon of Islamic values on the disclosure of information in the annual reports is still limited. So, further researches will be necessary to find another theory and develop methodologies to investigate the Islamic values represented in the annual report of sharia banking.

Abstract

The recent economic matters of Indonesia is sign of inflation. Inflation is a rise in the general level prices over time of a specific set of goods and services. In Indonesia, inflation rate is reported  based on  Consumer Price Index until 2007 always more than 5 percent unless in 1985 as 4.3 percent. The latest five year from 2003 to 2007 are 6.8%, 6.06%, 10.4%, 14,8% and 6.4%. It showed that a rise in the prices of a goods and services are influenced directly to change of purchasing power and production cost or the factors of production. Although the inflation is under two digits, inflation only above five percent is too high if its compare to gross national product. Generally, Financial Statements are arranged based on Historical Cost Accounting (HCA). By using this method, financial statements are arranged by using the price of transaction arise. As tool of measure or exchange in economy is used a monetary unit. Inflation is caused a monetary unit to be not stable. Financial statement is arranged based on Historical Cost Accounting not reflecting a change of purchasing power. Financial statement that reflect a change of purchasing power is General Price Level Accounting. This research uses case and field study by using purposive sampling. Analysis are using the number of dollar (NOD) attribute and the command over good (COG) attribute. NOD attribute is used to test that financial statements are interpretative and COG attribute is used to test that financial statements are relevance. The result of NOD attribute shows from 27 item, there are 92,59 percent is interpretative and the result of COG attribute, there are 74,07 percent is relevance. It means that financial statement is arranged by using General Price Level Accounting more interpretative and relevance than financial statement that arranged by using Historical Cost Accounting.

Abstract

Research aims: This research investigates the association of conservatism (both conditional and unconditional) with quality of earnings as well as with stock prices on companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX).Design/Methodology/Approach: The research uses a sample of 846 observations of publicly listed companies on the Indonesian Stock Exchange for the fiscal year that ends on December 31, 2016 through 2018. Conditional conservatism is measured by using an asymmetric timeliness measure from Basu (ATMB). Net income ratio (CFO/NI) is a proxy for earnings quality whereas ratio between market value and book value (MTB) is a measure of unconditional conservatism. The data used in this study are obtained both from Indonesian Stock Exchange database, and from company annual reports.Research findings: The study finds that all companies analyzed implement conservative accounting policies and practices. Besides, quality of earnings and stock prices are negatively associated with conditional conservatism. This research also proves that stock price negatively associated with unconditional conservatism, whereas unconditional conservatism does not associated with earnings quality.Theoretical contribution/ Originality: This study enriches the existing literature about conservatism, especially in emerging market environment. Moreover, this study discusses a set of conservatism that consist of conditional and unconditional conservatism. This may give a complete picture of conservatism practices adopted by Indonesian companies.Practitioner/Policy implication: Since conservatism can solve agency cost problems, the result of this study may affect the way a company produce useful information for interest parties.Research limitation/Implication: The use of the purposive sampling method limits generalizations, because sample designs could not be assumed to characterize all companies listed on IDX.
