Abstract

The study is about discourse relators in Sundanese. The data of Sundanese expressions will be analyzed using formal discourse analysis, focusing on cohesion. The result shows that there are two kinds of discourse relators in Sundanese which are grammatically and lexically characterized. The grammatically characterized discourse relators are reference, substitution, ellipsis, and conjunctive relation. The latter comprises several types and sub-types. Meanwhile, the lexically characterized discourse relators consist of six kinds: repetition, synonym, antonym, hyponym, mernym, and collocation. This latter kind also includes several types and sub-types. The typically unique discourse relators in Sundanese are cataphoraic pronoun of intra-phrase, inter-sentence, and inter-paragraph. The inter-paragraph cataphoraic pronoun can be used if there is not a new topic between the refernce and the referred pronoun. In Sundanese, in order restate something previously atated, we can use the repetition of the same form or the repplacement with co-referential form followed by demonstratives ieu this, eta that close, and itu that far. Moreover, the referential statement or replacement can be followed by the difinite demonstratives teh that and tea that.Key words: discourse relators, grammatical, and lexical cohesive device

Abstract

The main aim of this writing is to formulate the theory of universal grammar. The formulation made is taken form discussion on a close look at the universal grammar which of summary proposed by Greenberg and Hawkins. The items being searched are not about elements such as subject, predicate, object respectively in sentence, but the categories of words for example (N) & (V) in forming a simple sentence.the result of discussing universal grammar shows that (1) Chomskys model universal grammar; (2) Greenbergs model of universal grammar devides languages in the world into three types of universal world order (universal phrase sequence) = Verb + Subject + Object (VSO), Subject + Verb + Object (SVO), and Subject + Object + Verb (SOV); (3) Hawkinss model of universal grammar states that based on word order, language the world can be formulated into 24 types. Moreover, such types consist of groups of subtype and category V, S and O which are usually used to classify the types based on proposition and postposition, (4) the continued universal grammar states a different coocurence sequence, which reveals comparison-base which is not S, V, O, but category such as S, V, N, N. The first N is subject, the second one is indirect object, and the third N is direct object. In this case it is clear that S or O is represented by N; (5) when there is sequence NNN uninserted by V, a mark is needed to show which N as subject, device or indirect object. The mark can be seen as in rowd order N before V is subject, or N after V indirect object, while the second after V is direct object. If the states of N-N changes, there must be a certain postverb (postposition) to indicate the indirect object; (6) the adposition of language with a pattern VSO or SVO is preposition, while in the language SOV, the adposition is postposition.Key words: universal grammar, tipology, natural languages, and word order.

Abstract

Coventional technique of reading is commonly used by Senior Hugh School Students that this may due to their low interest and achievement in reading. However, there are more effective reading-techniques such as SQ3R and PQRST and also another factor influencing studentsachievement, family-learning way model. The study presents a comparison between reading ability for Seniro High School students using authoritative and democratic way, being taught by using SQ3R and PQRST models. It is an experimental study using students of SMA N 5 Purworejo by factorial design. For the experiment, we selected two classes consisting of the class X-1 as the first experiment group while the class X-2 as the second one. Based on family-learning way model, each group of experiment is devided into two sub-groups, the one getting authoritative while the other getting democratic treatment. The result shows that (1) reading ability of Senior High School students using authoritative family-learning who are taught using SQ3R model, is better than those being taught by using PQRST; (2) reading ability of Senior High School students using democratic way who are taught by using PQRST model, is better than those being taught by using SQ3R; and (3) there is interaction between reading technique using family-learning way model and the students achievement. In short, technique of reading using family-learning way model has influenced students achievement of reading.Key words: achievement, family-learning model, authoritative, SQ3R, and PQRST

Abstract

The study is about grammatical aspects of the political discourse. Using technique of formal discourse analysis, especially focussing on cohesion, the grammatical aspects of political discourse show particular characteristics. Although in general they show reference, ellipsis, and conjunction, the discussion of the grammatical aspects is only limited on reference. The findings show that the use of reference in the political discourse can be classified into seven types: (1) reference showing cohesion which tends to be formal and standard; (2) reference having types of endophoric and exophoric, anaphoric, cataphoric, anaphoric and cataphoric, pronoun, demonstrative, and comparative pronoun reference consisting o0f temporal, locational, situational, equivalent, naming, historical; and reference having forms of lexical, phrasal, sentencial, paragraph, and discourse; (3) endophoric reference which is more productive than exophoric one; (4) anaphoric reference which is more productive than cataphoric one; (5) phrasal reference which is more productive than lexical, sentencial, paragraph, and discoursal ones; (6) cataphoric reference which tends to be phrasal and paragraph; and (7) discourse reference which is typically exophoric.Key words: grammatical aspect, cohesion, reference, political discourse, and korpus data

Abstract

Mimetic approach is used in this study to reveal the practice of slavery depicted in two novels "narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglas" and "The Interesting Narrative of the life of Olaudah Equiao". The findings show that novels have common ground that is the practice of the slavery of blacks Africans by the whites in America. In some aspects, the slaveholders treated their slave inhumanly, savagely, and brutally. The slaves were really treated like animals in the ways of providing them food, shelter. clothes, and dispensation of rest. They were forbiden to learn of how to write and read. They were forced to work hard without having enough rest. However, when they got wage, they had to give it to their masters. Female slaves were whipped and tortured savagely, and their children were tortured to death. These are the examples of the brutality of the slaveholders.Key words: slavery, slaveholders, slaves, inhumanity, discrimination, and oppression

Abstract

language ecology was proposed by Einar Haugen in 1972 as the study of the interaction of any given language and its environment. Despite some use of the term in the literature, sociolinguistics have failed to develop the potenstial that Haugen saw in an ecological approach. Recent developments in ecological thought, however; when applied to language, raise questions about many basic assumptions of conventional linguistics. For example, from an ecological perspective, language is not a rule-governed system, but a form of patterned behaviour arising from the needs of human socialtity: communication, culture, and community. As Haugen foresaw, language ecology offers an exciting alternative approach to linguistic theory.Key words: language ecology, patterned behaviour, holistic, dynamic, and interactive

Abstract

The study is about a close look at Conrads trans-racial romance related to the Victorian period. Trans-racial love between white men and non-white women becomes a popular theme in the early works of Josep Conrad, a famous writer of the late Victorian period. Using a closely technical reading in the three of Conrads works Lord Jim, Almayers Folly, and An Outcast of the Island, we can show that such a trans-racial romance is not merely meant for appreciating equivalence. In turn, the trans-racial romance of Conrads can be understood as the reflection of the Western colonization on the East where the white men take a role as subjects who had dominately explored while the non-white women as objects who are passively being explored.Key words: colonization, race, romance plot, subject, object, and dominance

Abstract

This paper is abstracted from the findings of a case study aimed at describing the codes used by children at Al-Amin Children Islamic Boarding School in Sukoharjo, Central Java. The majority of children at this Children Islamic Boarding School are bilinguals. They use javanese as their first language and Indonesian as their second language. However; they live in a specific language condition in which they should only use Indonesian in their daily activities. The analysis shows that the codes used by children are in the form of language (Indonesian and Javanese), speech level (ngoko, madya and krama), and style (formal, informal and brief). The differentiation of function between Indonesian and Javanese is not quite clear. Frequently, children use both Indonesian and Javanese in many occassions. As a result, there amny code switching and code mixing in their speech. Code swicthing occured in their speech to function: (1) count (2) think aloud (3) show annoyance (4) give emphasis (5) give reinforcement (6) give respect, and (7) make quotation. The result also shows that code mixing indicates that childrens mastery of Indonesian and Javanese is still lacking. Besides, it also indicates that they get confused with language function.Key words: code forms, code function, code switching, and code mixing

Abstract

One of the Strategies of Contextual Teaching and Learning is authentic assessment, which can provide valid and accurate information about what students really know and are able to do, or about the quality of educational programs. One of its forms is performance assessment. It requires students to demonstrate the application of knowledge to a particular context. The prevailing philosophy of performance assessment is that it provides ways to improve achievement, demonstrate exactly what a student does or does not understand, relate learning experiences to instruction, and combine assessment with teaching. Despite the benefits, some teachers are hesitant to implement it because they do not have enough knowledge about how to assess a students performance properly. Since in performance assessment there are degrees to which a student is successful or unsuccessful, the performance should be evaluated in such a way that it allows teachers to consider those degrees, that is by creating rubrics. This paper attempts at discussing basic steps in implementing performance assessment in general and developing scoring rubrics in particular.Key words: performance, assessment, scoring rubric, analytic, and holistic
