Abstract

This movie is true story of Elizabeth Gilbert’s life that adapted from her novel. This movie tells about Liz’s journey for a year that visit three counties to pursue her happiness. The research is proposed to analyze pursuing happiness of Liz Gilbert’s personalities in facing her depression with Psychoanalytic Approach. The objective of the study is to analyze the film based on the psychoanalytic approach. This study is a descriptive qualitative study, using the movie of Ryan Murphy’s Eat Pray Love. And Eat Pray Love’s major character as the object of analysis of the study. The researcher makes an analysis of Liz Gilbert’s id, ego, and superego. The researcher uses the theory of Psychoanalytic by Sigmund Freud because it is relevant to the problem. Based on the analysis, the outcome of this study shows the following conclusion. Firstly, there is a close relationship between a work of literature and Psychoanalysis Phenomena. Secondly, the general conclusion of psychoanalysis of humans is when people get desperate then they pursue the happiness.

Abstract

This study was aimed to identify the types of errors made by the eighthgrade students of SMP N 2 Ngemplak Boyolali in writing recount text,especially to identify the types of lexical, syntactical, and discourse errors,and to find out the frequency of each type of errors, dominant type of errors,and the sources of errors. The type of this research was descriptivequalitative research. In collecting the data, the writer used elicitation. Itconsisted of four steps; the writer gave explanation about recount text,askedthe students to make recount text with the topic given, read and marked thetypes of errors in the students writing composition, wrote the erroneoussentences and classified all types of error based on linguistic category andsurface strategy taxonomy. The technique for analyzing data wereidentification of errors, classifying into error types, describing the frequencyof error, describing the dominant type of error, analysis of the sources oferror and describing the purposed remedial teaching. The result of the studyshowed that lexical errors was 15,51 % consisting of False friend (similar inmeaning), False friend (similar in form), Wrong spelling, and Codeswitching. Syntactical errors was 79,08 %, consisting of Verb (addition ofverb, misuse of verb in past tense, addition of to in present tense), Noun(omission of –s in plural marker, omission of possessive adjective, additionof –s in plural marker), BE (omission of BE, addition of BE in past tense,misuse of BE), Pronoun (omission of –s in possessive pronoun ), Phrase(misordering noun phrase), Article (omission of article the, omission ofarticle a , addition of article the), Preposition (omission of preposition,addition of preposition, misuse of preposition ), Conjuction (omission ofconjuction), Sentence Construction (omission had as predicate, omission ofsubject). Discourse errors was 5,36 %, consisting of generic structure andconjuction. The dominant type of errors was the misuse of verb in past tense.The writer also found two sources of errors, namely Interlingual transfer andIntralingual transfer.Key words: Error Analysis, Linguistic Category Taxonomy, RecountText, Surface Strategy Taxonomy

Abstract

This research paper is intended to describe the teaching reading to the eighthgrade students of SMP Muhammadiyah 4 Surakarta in 2015/2016 AcademicYear. The writer focuses on teaching reading at the first semester conductedby the teacher. The purpose of this research is to know the methods forteaching reading used by the teacher and to know the problems faced by theteacher in teaching reading at the eighth grade of SMP Muhammadiyah 4Surakarta in 2015/2016 Academic Year. The data are taken from allelements of teaching reading conducted by the teacher and the students and other sources such as field note, syllabus, textbook, and lesson plan. Themethods of collecting data are observation, interview, and documentation.The result of the research shows that the methods of teaching reading usedby the teacher at the eighth grade of SMP Muhammadiyah 4 Surakarta in2015/2016 academic year are Grammar Translation Method, Direct Method,and Cognitive Code Language. The problems of teaching reading are limitedstudents‟ vocabulary, uncontrolled class situation, and limited media used. Key words: descriptive study, teaching reading

Abstract

The major problem of this study is describing the struggle to fight againsttyrannical regime in Chechnya reflected in Leo Tolstoy’s Hadji Murad. Theobjective of this study is to analyze the novel based on Marxist approach.The writer employs qualitative method. The object of the study is LeoTolstoy’s novel Hadji Murad published in 1904. The writer uses two datasources: primary and secondary. The primary data source is the text of HadjiMurad by Leo Tolstoy, published by Pensylvania State University and thesecondary data source are references and materials related to the study whichare taken from books or internet. The technique of data collection isdocumentation and the technique of data analysis is descriptive analysis.Based on the analysis, the writer gets two conclusions. First, through HadjiMurad novel, Tolstoy delivers a message that hero is a matter of perspective.Second, the Hadji Murad novel reflects the social realities of the ChechenMuslims in the struggling against the Russian tyrannical regime that reflectTolstoy’s support to the proletariat class.Key words: Hadji Murad, Marxist, regime, struggle, tyranny, Tolstoy

Abstract

This research describes types of technique used by the English teacher of SMA N2 Sukoharjo to develop students’ English speaking skill, the purposes of eachtechnique, teacher’s roles, student’s roles, and instructional material. The type ofthis research is descriptive qualitative especially Naturalistic. Methods used inthis research are: observation, interview, filed note, and documentation. Theresult shows that the type of technique used by the English teacher in teachinglearning process to develop students’ speaking skill at SMA N 2 Sukoharjo suchare Group Work Presentation, Drama, and Song. Teacher’s roles in teachinglearning process such as teacher as a Controller, as a Prompter, as an Assessor, asan Organizer, as an Observer, and as an Model. Student’s roles in teachinglearning process such are student as a Planner, as a Member, and as a Tutor.Material used by the English teacher in teaching learning process is “Bahasa danSastra Inggris: Peminatan Ilmu Bahasa dan Budaya” written by Hidayat, et.al(2013). The conclusion in this research is the English teacher at SMA N 2Sukoharjo used various techniques to develop students’ speaking skill in teachinglearning process. Various techniques used by the teacher in teaching learningprocess make the student more active, more creative and the student moreenthusiastic in teaching learning process especially in speaking activity in theclassroom. Various techniques also make the student not bored when learningprocess, the students’ fun, enjoyed and confident when learning speaking process.Based on the observation, the use of technique in teaching learning process isvery important to make situation in classroom more interesting and make thestudent enthusiastic in learning process.Key words: Classroom Technique in Teaching Speaking, Instructional Material,Student’s and Teacher’s Roles

Abstract

This is a naturalistic qualitative research, which aims to describe and toexplain the implementation of Inquiry-based Learning in teaching English atSMP negeri 1 Gemolong consisting the component of teaching learningnamely; learning objective, classroom procedure, classroom technique, therole of instructional material, teacher‟s role, students‟ role, media,assessment. The researcher used observation, interview and document in collecting the data. Based on the research findings, the researcher found the results as follows; 1) there are two kinds of learning objectives, namelygeneral learning objectives and specific learning objectives, 2) classroomprocedure used exploration, elaboration, confirmation, 3) classroomtechnique used in teaching English were identifying key words, reading text,discussion, role playing, comprehension, crazy story games, 4) the roles ofinstructional materials were as a reference source for learners on grammar,vocabulary, pronunciation; as a source of stimulation and ideas forclassroom activities, 5) English teacher had roles as facilitator, manager,explainer, motivator, 6) students‟ roles were students learning from teacher,students learn from other students, students as subject of learning, studentsas performer, 7) media used in teaching English were video, drama, board,text, and 8) assessment used by teacher were test and non-test, test wasdivided into daily test, mid test, final test. Abstract

This research paper is aimed to classify the type of errors, analyze thefrequency and dominant, and explain the sources of error. The type of thisresearch is descriptive research. The research collects English TutorialProgram record as the source of the data. The research uses documentationmethod to select the data. There are 305 data containing of errors. Theresearcher use Clark and Clark theory and Dulay Burt, and Krashen theory toanalyze the error. They are speech error, morphological error and syntacticalerror. In speech errors are filled pause (81, 96%), Repeat (44, 27%), SilentPause (19, 67%), Stutters (6, 22%), Injection (1, 96%), correction (0, 65%),Slip of the Tongue (0, 98%). Morphological error are vocabulary error (1,96%), Pronunciation (9, 83%), Omission of Bound (1, 63%). Syntactical errorare omission of Modal (will) (1, 31%), omission of preposition (1, 31%),Question Construction (1, 31%) and the last Wrong in Word Selection (0,65%).Key Words: error analysis, oral production

Abstract

The study aims to identify the types of morphological, syntactic, discourseerror in writing recount text by the eighth grade students of SMPMuhammadiyah 4 Surakarta. In addition, it is to know the frequency of eachtype of errors, to know the dominant type of error and to know the sources ofthe errors.The type of research is qualitative research. The method ofcollecting data is elicitation method, which is divided into four steps: first steps arerequesting the learner to make recount text with the theme that has given; second step is reading the recount text made by students; third step isfinding and marking error in the recount text; and last step is dividing theerror into the types of error based on linguistic category and surface strategytaxonomy.Foranalyzing the data,the writer takes six steps, namely:identification of errors, classifying into error types, describing the frequencyof error, describing the dominant type of error, analysis of the sources oferror and describing the purposed remedial teaching. The result of researchshows that lexical errors is 22,2% including false friends, wrong spelling anduse of Indonesian word. Syntactical error is 64% which includes verb(omission of verb, misuses of verb in past tense, addition of to in verb ofpresent tense addition of verb), noun (omission of {-s} plural marker,addition of {-s}), BE (omission of be, misuses of be), phrase (misorderingnoun phrase)), article (addition of article), preposition (addition ofpreposition, omission of preposition), sentence construction(omission ofsubject, literal translation of Indonesian). Discourse error is7,7% whichinclude generic structure. Abstract

This research aims to describe the communication strategies used by secondsemester students in Speaking class of Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta.The study is also as a reference for the better problem-management in teachinglearningprocess. The data of research contain communication strategies usedbythe second semester students in Speaking class of English EducationDepartment of Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta in 2015/2016 academicyear. The sources of data are derived from event, informant, and document. Thewriter investigates classes of Speaking, with 8 students as the subjects of theresearch. The writer uses descriptive qualitative method in analyzing the data.The data are based on Celce-Murcia taxonomy of communication strategies.The result of this study shows that there are five types with fourteen subtypes ofcommunication strategies, the most dominant types of communication strategiesused by second semester students in Speaking class is fillers with 31,05%, andthe rarely type of communication strategies used by students are topicavoidance, word coinage, literal translation, self-initiated repair with 0,53%.The result above implies that teaching communication strategies is needed forstudents who still have limited knowledge in the target language. To maintainstudents‟ communication, communication strategies as a subject in Speakingclass will make the students aware when they communicate with the others.Key words: communication strategies, speaking

Abstract

This research emphasized on scrutinizing the subtitling strategy used by thesubtitler of Hansel and Gretel Witch Hunter movie by Jack and the Wilee. Italso analyses the subtitling quality of Hansel and Gretel Witch Hunter movie byJack and the Wilee. This research is descriptive qualitative research. Thepurposes of this research are: (1) To describe the subtitling strategies used bythe subtitler of Hansel and Gretel Witch Hunter movie by Jack and the Wilee,and (2) To describe the subtitling quality of Hansel and Gretel Witch Huntermovie by Jack and the Wilee. The data are analyzed based on the theories ofsubtitling strategies and subtitling quality. The data are utterances containingsubtitling strategies and subtitling quality collected from the data source. Thedata source is the subtitle of Hansel and Gretel Witch Hunter movie by Jack andthe Wilee. The results of this research show that there are 748 data. Theresearcher finds nine strategies are: (1) 226 data to transfer, (2) 20 data toexpansion, (3) 156 data to paraphrase, (4) 11 data to condensation, (5) 8 data todecimation, (6) 62 data to imitation strategy, (7) 3 data to transcription strategy,(8) 372 data to deletion strategy, (9) 7 data to resignation. There is nodislocation strategy. There are three aspects for good quality that subtitlingshould fulfill: accuracy, acceptability, and readability: (1) 599 data or 80 %accurately, (2) 67 data or 9 %less accurately, (3) 82 data or 11 % inaccurately,(4) 622 data or 83.2 % acceptability, (5) 67 data or 9 %less acceptability, (6) 59data or 7.8 % unacceptability, (7) 631 data or 84.3 %high readability level, (8)56 data or 7.5 % moderate readability level, and (9) 61 data or 8.2 % lowreadability level.Key words: movie, quality, strategy, subtitling
