Abstract

The major problem in this research is the existance of prostitution phenomena in Japan as reflected in Haruki Murakami’s After Dark novel. The research analyses Haruki Murakami’s After Dark novel to find out the structural elements of the novel, and also to understand the existence of prostitution phenomena in modern Japanese society based on feminist approach. In analysing the novel, the reseacher uses qualitativea method. The data are divided into two kinds data, namely primary data and secondary data. The primary data sources is the novel entitled After Dark by Haruki Murakami which is published in 2007. And the secondary data is the sources which is related to the issue taken by reseacher, such as the book of the theory namely feminism approach and other resources about Japanese society during in the early of twenty one century.The method of getting data is library research. However the descriptive analysis is the technique of data analysis. The outcome of the study draws the following conclusions. Firstly, the existence of prostitution phenomena in modern Japan society is placing women in the second position under the man. Secondly, there are four factors that involve the existence of prostitution in Japan .They are the men who buy commercial sex acts, the exploiters who make up the sex industry, the states that are destination countries, the culture that tolerates or promotes sexual exploitation. It also reveals the perception of Japanese society about sex which is changing following the modernity and making sex not taboo anymore.

Abstract

The research paper aims at finding out and describing peer response including 1) students’ response to their friend’s work, 2) students’ response to the correction, and 3) students’ perception about the benefits of peer response in writing class in English Department of Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta. The type of this research is case study. The subjects of this research are ten students of a writing class as the sample for the research. The methods of collecting data are observation, interview and documentation. The result of this research shows that ten students in writing subject use almost all the peer response proposed by Nelsom and Murphy. However their responses are different. The researcher finds the students’ responses to their friends can be classified into four categories. They are unnecessary correction (4%), accurate correction (46%), inaccurate correction (19%), and disregard(31%) from 48 data. The researcher divided two categories in students’ response to the correction. They are students revising the sentences and students disrgarding the correction. The last finding, the researcher finds 60% perceive of the students that peer response gives benefits; it can make their better writing. Therefore, peer response can be use as one strategy of teaching writing as proposed by Nelsom and Murphy.

Abstract

The study is aimed to find out the correlation between vocabulary mastery and student’s English interest  toward student’s English achievement of the second grade students of SMPN 3 Sukoharjo; both partially and simultaneously. This study used a test, a questionnaire, and a documentation to collect the data. The population of the study is all of the second grade students while the sample is 50 students taken by cluster random sampling technique. The techniques used to analyze the data are simple and multiple correlation and regression by using SPSS 17. The results of the study show that there is a positive correlation between vocabulary mastery and student’s English interest toward student’s English achievement, both partially and simultaneously. The positive correlation indicates that vocabulary mastery and student’s English interest tend to go up or to go down together with student’s English achievement.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to get: (1) the correlation between students ‘Personality with students ‘English Achievement; (2) the correlation between students Creativity with students ‘English Achievement; (3) the correlation between students Personality and students ‘Creativity simultaneously with students ‘English Achievement. This research is a correlation research. It involves three variables that consist of two independent variables and one dependent variable. The two independent variables are the students Personality and students Creativity; while the one dependent variable is the English Achievement. This research population is  class XI students of Automotive and Engineering Department of SMK Pancasila Surakarta. The research population consists of 196 students with a sample size of 132 students. Sampling technique was proportional random sampling. The instruments were questionnaires and documentation. The questionnaires were used to measure the Personality and Creativity Variables. The documentation was used to obtain the scores of English Achievement. The data were analyzed by using partial correlation and multiple regression technique. The results of the research showed that (1) there was a positive and significant correlation between students Personality with the students’ English Achievement; (2) there was a positive and significant correlation between students Creativity with students’ English Achievement; (3) there were positive and significant correlation between students Personality and students Creativity simultaneously with students’ English Achievement.

Abstract

This study is about how obsessed with life reflected in Rupert Sander’s Snow White and the Huntsman movie (2012) by using a psychoanalytic approach. The objectives of the study are to analyze the movie based on its structural elements and to analyze the movie based on psychoanalytic approach.The writer uses qualitative method for analyzing the movie. The object of the study is Snow White and the Huntsman movie’s (2012) by Rupert Sander. It will be analyzed through Psychoanalytic Approach. The primary data is taken from the movie itself and the secondary data sources are books or any information that are relevant to the subject matter. The techniques of collecting the data are watching the movie repeatedly, taking notes of important parts both primary and secondary data, arranging the data into several groups based on its theoretical category, selecting particular parts considered important and relevant for analysis, drawing conclusion and formulate its pedagogical suggestion. The technique of data analysis is descriptive analysis.      Based on the analysis, the researcher draws the following conclusions. First, based on the structural analysis of each element, it shows that the character and characterization, casting, plot, setting, point of view, theme, mise-en-scene, cinematography, sound, and editing are related to each other. Second, based on psychoanalytic analysis, it shows that Snow White and the Huntsman wants to convey a message that the people maximasize obsession in order to have a good experience of life.

Abstract

The study deals with the error analysis in writing descriptive text for Junior High School students. The method of this research is descriptive quantitative. This research was carried out at SMP Islam Diponegoro, Surakarta. There are two techniques to collect the data, survey and test. The technique to analyze the data used in this research is error analysis. The steps of analyzing data started from collecting the data, identifying the error, describing the error, explaining the error, and drawing the conclusion.The result of this research are article errors were the highest number of linguistic errors with 49 errors or 45,37% and omission errors were the highest number of surface  errors with 83 errors or 76,85%

Abstract

This research aims at describing active learning in teaching writing at the eighth grade of SMP Negeri 5 Boyolali in 2013 / 2014 academic year. The objectives of this research are : (1) to describe the implementation of active learning in teaching writing at SMP Negeri 5 Boyolali consisting the goals of teaching writing, the techniques of active learning in teaching writing, the procedures of active learning in teaching writing, and the media used of active learning in teaching writing. (2) to describe the problems faced by the teacher in applying active learning. (3) to describe the problems faced by the students.The writer uses descriptive research. The subject of this research are the students and the English teacher of the eighth grade of SMP Negeri 5 Boyolali in 2013/2014 academic year. The writer gets the data of this research from event, informant, and document. The methods of collecting data are interview, observation, and analyzing document.The results of the analysis show that (1) the implementation of active learning in teaching writing at SMP Negeri 5 Boyolali, consists of the goals of teaching writing are as follows: the students are expected identify the genre of the text, the students are expected able to make one genre of the text, and the students are expected able to give answer based on the question from the text; the techniques of active learning in teaching writing are as follows: question and answer, scrambled sentence, and group discussion; the procedures of active learning in teaching writing are as follows: observing, questioning, collecting information, and communicating; and the media used of active learning in teaching writing are as follows: students material’s book, laptop, projector, and LCD. (2) the problems faced by the teacher in applying active learning are as follows: managing the class, the lack of media, and there are still teachers who can’t operate media of teaching learning. (3) the problems faced by the students are as follows: limited vocabulary, too many task and exercises in writing activities, and not all students liked active learning technique.

Abstract

The objectives of this research are: (1) to identify whether or not and to what extent the use of Mind Mapping improves the reading comprehension; and (2) to describe the class situation when Mind Mapping is implemented in the reading class of the seventh year students of SMP N 3 Colomadu. The problems faced by the students include the difficulty in identifying the main idea, implicit information, explicit information, referent, and word meaning in the text.  The research data were collected by using techniques of observation, interview, field note, photographs, and test (pre-test and post-test). The quantitative and qualitative analyses show that mind mapping can improve both the students’ reading comprehension and the class situation. It can be seen by comparing the pre-test and the post-test score. Their mean score of pre-test, post-test 1, and post-test 2 were 57.99, 68.29, and 80.31.

Abstract

This study aims to describe (1) how M.U.R.D.E.R technique can improve students’ reading comprehension; (2) what may happen in the class when M.U.R.D.E.R technique is implemented in the reading class. The research was conducted at SMA N 2 Karanganyar. The research subject was the students of XI-IPA 2. The data of this research are qualitative and quantitative data. The qualitative data were collected through interview, observation, questionnaire, and photograph and were analyzed using assembling the data, coding the data, comparing the data, building interpretation, and reporting the outcomes. The quantitative data were collected through test and were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The result of the research shows that: (1) M.U.R.D.E.R technique could improve students’ reading comprehension. The mean score of pre-test (61.35) improved to 71.95 in post-test 1 and to 78.08 in post-test 2; (2) the students were more active and communicative. They had more courage to share their ideas to their partner.

Abstract

The research is proposed to analyze Esther Greenwood’s psychological conflicts in The Bell Jar novel by using Psychoanalytic Criticism. The major problem in this article is to explain how the psychological conflict is reflected in Sylvia Plath’s The Bell Jar.The object of study is The Bell Jar novel written by Sylvia Plath. Qualitative study is a method which is used to analyze the psychological conflicts reflected in the novel. The result of this study shows that in this novel Sylvia Plath illustrated a psychological phenomenon in which an individual encounters an inner conflict that requires resolution.
