Abstract

Abstract. Despite a growing sense that start-up enterprise is critical to economic growth, the topic of performance management affects strategic and organizational processes remains largely understudied. In Indonesia, as a sphere where the entrepreneurial ecosystem is on the rise, we explored the strategy of Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) start-up firms using a Balanced Scorecard (BSC). This research aims to determine how suitable the BSC is applied to AEC start-ups and how this tool is implemented as the enterprise evolves. We conduct in-depth case studies using multiple data sources, including interviews and field observation. By performing the comparative analysis, we identified managerial practices that enable the networking of BSC perspectives – learning and growth, internal process, customer, and financial – during the start-up lifecycle. From the contribution to the literature perspective, this study provides empirical evidence that the BSC is a valuable performance management tool for early-stage firms. However, the BSC must be reconfigured regularly to reflect the current development stage’s objectives throughout implementation. As the business implications, this research helps AEC entrepreneurs see the significance of achieving organizational balance to drive growth and transition from agile start-ups to sustainable companies. Future research may examine the interconnection between managerial control systems and leadership attributes in different business contexts. Keywords:  AEC firms, Balanced Scorecard, Performance Management System, Start-up Lifecycle

Abstract

Abstract. Air transport business is challenged to oversee their performance and operations to preserve their business presence within the COVID-19 widespread. It is fundamental to distinguish the suitable performance and operation and their relationship with the pandemic. In this way, we used the indicators to employ a systematic literature review and experts’ point of view to select and group suitable indicators to address the literature gap. Twenty performance and internal operations indicators are identified and redefined from the review. The Delphi method’s result suggests eight indicators categorized in airline performance indicators and seven indicators categorized in internal operation indicators. We investigate the relationship of COVID-19 pandemic on the selected indicators using SmartPLS based on fifty-two weeks performance, and operation report of one of full-service airline started from 08 March 2020 until 28 February 2021. It can be deduced that the COVID-19 pandemic has a significant and negative influence on the airline’s performance. This study fills the gap by synthesizing and creating suitable and comprehensive performance and operation indicators of air transport carriers in a pandemic situation and their relationships. Finally, this study provides an invaluable point for analyzing the air transport carrier industries in a pandemic to maximize performance through profitability and load factors indicators. Keywords:  Airline, Pandemic, Performance, Operation

Abstract

Abstract: Tourism is the most affected industry due to the Covid-19 pandemic, though it can be reinstated through innovations and collaborations. For instance, the marketing paradigm has shifted from product to service-dominant logic, influencing open innovations. The closed innovations are ineffective in the current business environment because of excluding other actors, such as suppliers, universities, research organizations, public institutes, competitors, and tourists, specifically during the pandemic. This indicates stakeholder networks are essential in promoting tourism industry innovations. Therefore, this research examined the existing literature on multi-stakeholder innovation in the tourism industry. The relevant articles were identified using multiple keywords search on major research databases and analyzed based on tourism innovation research stream, type, and characteristic of innovation (value creation-value capture), innovation platforms, research methodology, the network actors, and key concepts. After identifying the gap, relevant literature for academicians and practitioners was provided. The literature is expected to guide practitioners on the importance of stakeholder innovations to restore and improve tourism conditions from the pandemic. Keywords: Literature review, Future direction, Innovation, Collaboration, Multi-stakeholder, Tourism industry

Abstract

Abstract. To prevent the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, the government has had some large-scale social restrictions (LSSR). As a side effect, many firms experienced a decrease in their revenues, which will decrease their financial performance. This research seeks to investigate how the COVID-19 pandemic affects financial performance of companies listed in the Indonesian stock exchange. To analyze the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic, an ordinary least square (OLS) regression is employed with a dummy variable of the period before and after the pandemic started. Furthermore, to examine the causal effect of LSSR, this study uses the difference-in-difference method with a dummy variable whether the businesses could still operate during the LSSR. The results show that COVID-19 pandemic has a significant negative effect on firms’ financial performance represented by ROA. Secondly, by employing panel-data regression with difference-in-difference, it is found that the LSSR has an insignificant effect on firms’ performance in affected firms. From the results, this research can contribute to the literature to see the effect of the large-scale social restrictions on firms’ financial performance. This research also can be used as a consideration for the government in making future policies to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. Keywords: COVID-19 pandemic, difference-in-difference, firms’ financial performance, large-scale social restrictions
