Abstract

River ecosystem is a potential resource for ecotourism development necessary to job creation for the local community and river conservation support. The aims of this research are to depict the ecotourism attraction potentials, to prepare ecotourism product designs, to evaluate tourist’s preferences regarding ecotourism objects and attractions, and to develop a typology of tourism products prospectively developed along the Pekalen Atas River. This study was completed from October 2016 to March 2017 in Pekalen Atas River, Ranu Gedang Village, Tiris Subdistrict, Probolinggo Regency. This research covered object identification and mapping steps along the riverbank, and then followed by respondent preferences testing toward the ecotourism objects required to the making of ecotourism product development’s classification and ranking. This product was also developed by taking stakeholders’ feedback into account during the Focus Group Discussion (FGD). The result reveals that the Pekalen Atas Riverbank consists of 26 rapids, three waterfalls, three fields, three caves and 11 animal species. The potential objects could be classified into rafting and non-rafting. Based on tourists’ perceptions, the non-rafting objects are considered “attractive” so that their further developments should meet the principles of sustainable natural resources utilization compliance. The FGD results confirmed three types of ecotourism products that could be developed along the Pekalen Atas Riverbank, i.e. low-, medium-and hard-level product.

Abstract

Assessing the surface water vulnerability to pollution in the Garang Downstream Watershed Semarang requires a study concerned with some environmental components/indicators. Vulnerability measurement through surface water susceptibility index formulation on pollution is important considering the absence of surface water pollution effect indicators in an efficient assessment system. Therefore, a multi-indicator vulnerability assessment on surface water pollution is necessary. The Surface Water Vulnerability Index to Pollution (SWVIP) is composed of five components, namely water quality (WQ), rainfall (R), land use and vegetation cover (LVC), river hydrogeometric (RH) and population (P). Regarding index development, the subindex graphs and the weighting of each component are created. The application of composite index measurement yields an equation of SWVIP = 0.29.WQI + 0.23PI + 0.14RI + 0.20.LVCI + 0.14.RHI and an index value of 73.87 including the "rather high" category that represents the "vulnerable"condition in the Garang Downstream Watershed Semarang. This suggests that the five selected components used in the index creation can provide useful information to decision making in the surface water pollution control.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the priority sectors in MEBIDANGRO districts and their regional hierarchy and interactions. It used a quantitative descriptive method based on secondary data. The priority sectors were analyzed using Location Quotient (LQ), Shift-Share (S-S), and Klassen Typology. For analyzing the regional hierarchy, the research employed scalogram analysis and Marshall centrality index. The regional interactions were determined by gravitation and breaking point analysis methods. The results show that the regions in MEBIDANGRO have two distinctive priority sectors, namely primary sector specialization and sector diversification. The research also found that Percut Sei Tuan District performs at the highest hierarchy with the strongest influence on regional interactions.

Abstract

The complexity of coastal development in Baubau City needs to be anticipated carefully for hindering coastal ecosystems sustainability away from disruptions and threats. Environmental degradation resulted from developments could be disastrous to economic and infrastructure sectors as well as human lives. Therefore, development initiatives are supposed to comply with the principles of sustainable development. Accordingly, sustainability analysis is necessary to figure out the sustainability status of Baubau City development. The purpose of this study is to analyze the sustainability of Baubau City development in accordance with multidimensional measurement of ecological, economic, social, infrastructure and technology, and law and institution. The data used in this study include primary and secondary data obtained through literature studies, expert discussions/stakeholder, interviews, questionnaires, and field surveys. The sustainability analysis applies multidimensional scaling, leverage, Pareto, and Monte Carlo techniques. The results show that Baubau City is quite sustainable in technological infrastructure dimension (74,77), and institutional law dimension (65,87), but less sustainable in ecology dimension (32,90) and economic dimension (41,87), and unsustainable in social dimension (20,61). In addition, there are 35 sensitive attributes affecting the sustainability of Baubau City development.

Abstract

Local economic development (LED) is part of regional development concepts which emphasizes the use of local resources and capabilities and cooperation between all components to achieve quality and sustainable development. The LED initiatives could be accomplished through (industrial) business cluster approach. Cluster is basically a grouping of businesses characterized by business commonalities in proximate locations. The cluster growth requires proper role and involvement from the all stakeholders ranging from public to private sectors such as financial institutions, non-governmental organizations, educational institutions and local communities. Water Hyacinth Cluster in Banyubiru Subdistrict of Semarang Regency is of a good example. During its development trajectories, the Water Hyacinth Cluster has faced several problems because of which the call upon multiple stakeholders involvement necessary. This study aims to figure out and measure the effectiveness of the role played by each stakeholder in the observed cluster development. This study uses a mixed method research which combines quantitative and qualitative approaches. The quantitative approach is used to measure the effectiveness of the role played by the stakeholders involved in cluster, and the qualitative approach to assess and figure out the role of stakeholders deeper. The conclusion reveals that the non-government institutions perform the most dominant involvement among the remaining stakeholders. In addition, the role in production input stage is considerably more effective to the overall cluster performance.
