Abstract

The study about utilization of char made from banana (Musa paradisiacal) to reduce water hardness had been carried out. In this study, the surface area, equilibrium time of adsorption of metal ions, adsorption isotherm, capacity of adsorption, and the effect of pH on metal ions adsorption were used as parameters. Futher the optimum conditions were used to reduce the water hardness. The results of this study showed that the surface area, capacity of adsorption on Ca from 100 ppm solution were 3.3932 m2/g and 2.8112 mg/g respectively with equilibrium time of 90 minutes. Whereas, the capacity of adsorption on Mg2+from 75 ppm solution was 2.3371 mg/g with equilibrium time of 90 minutes. The adsorption capacity increased to the highest value at pH 7 which were 4.1197 mg/g and 3.0210 mg/g for Ca2+and Mg2+ respectively. The value of total hardness of water samples decreased by 63.057 mg/L in 4 hours contact time.

Abstract

Mangosteen peel has been studied to contain many chemical constituents. However, differences in the geographical location of a plant can result in variations in the content of a plant metabolites. This study aimed to determine differences in the characteristics of the extract as well as content owned chemical peel ethanol extract of mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana L.) were obtained from Tabanan and Karangasem regency, Bali province. This study is experimental designed.  Extraction process used the method of maceration with 70% ethanol. Organoleptic characterization of the extract was conducted. Water content, content of water-soluble extract and ethanol soluble extract were also determined. Phytochemical screening of the extract covered the content of alkaloids, glycosides, flavonoids, saponins, phenolic, and steroids / terpenoids. The results showed that the ethanol extract of mangosteen peel taken from Tabanan regency contain saponins, alkaloids, flavonoids, phenolics, terpenoids, and glycosides, while the ethanol extract of mangosteen rind taken from Karangasem regency contain saponins, alkaloids, flavonoids, phenolic, terpenoids. The ethanol extract of mangosteen peel taken from Tabanan regency has a different chemical content with ethanol extract of mangosteen peel taken from Karangasem regency.

Abstract

The research about utilization of natural dyes from root bark extract of Morinda citrifolia on cotton fabric has been done. The extraction of root bark morinda was done by using water and methanol as solvent with ratio of 1:20 (w/v) (10 g sample : 200 mL solvent). The extract obtained from water was blackish brown, while from methanol solvent was reddish brown. The extract obtained was used to dye cotton fabric with addition of 1.00 g whiting as a mordant. Extracts of both solvents can dye cotton fabrics with varied colors : yellow, red, and red purple. Mordant can strengthen the bond between the fiber and dyes and sharpen the fabric color. Endurance test by using 0.5% detergent water to soak for 15 minutes, showing the colour of fabric without mordant easily fade, whereas the colour with mordant of whiting do not easily fade.
