Abstract

This article aims to analyze the psychoanalysis feminism of the representation of patriarchy and woman autonomy of the character Curley’s wife in John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men. The analysis is conducted using a descriptive qualitative approach, applying Juliet Mitchell’s theory of psychoanalysis feminism to describe the woman’s condition during the American Great Depression through the character of Curley’s wife, who is not named and experiences various forms of oppression as impacts of the patriarchal system. The results show that Curley’s wife is portrayed as a character who goes against patriarchal norms. She exhibits various emotional and behavioral responses due to the psychological and social pressures she experiences. Patriarchy affects Curley’s wife’s self-perception and social interactions, causing her to feel deep loneliness and frustration. Through psychoanalysis and feminist analysis, this study reveals how gender norms and patriarchal structures shape women’s psychological conditions. Curley’s wife experiences alienation, loneliness, and lack of power in the patriarchal structure that exists in the environment where she lives. Mitchell says that the pervasive suffering experienced by women highlights that extreme physical violence is an ever-present threat. This persistent fear becomes a defense mechanism against their loneliness and a means to cope with male domination. Additionally, their behaviors, often perceived as flirtatious, are ways to express a deep-seated desire to escape the constraints of patriarchy. Curley’s wife’s flirtatious nature becomes a defense mechanism against her loneliness, a way to deal with Curley’s domination, and a way to express her desire to escape patriarchy.

Abstract

This research aims to find out defense mechanism of Eleanor character in the novel The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson. The primary issue raised is how Eleanor character employs defense mechanisms, especially reaction formation to cope with her past traumas. This research focuses on identifying events from Eleanor’s past that contribute and trigger reaction formation in Hill House, a house where the characters attended as respondent. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method. The data consist of excerpts from the novel The Haunting of Hill House. The results reveal the forms of reaction formation shown by the character. These findings contribute to a better understanding of the connection between trauma and defense mechanisms in the characters. For example, Eleanor character manipulated her behavior while staying at Hill House, revealing a different side of herself to the other characters. This aligns with Freud’s theory of reaction formation. Eleanor character tried to hide her true feelings so that the other characters would not isolate her. This situation shows how people can use reaction formation as a defense mechanism to cope with their trauma or her psychological conflicts.

Abstract

This study explores the perceptions of 10th-grade EFL students on using Spotify as a tool to improve vocabulary through listening to English songs. The study highlights Indonesian high school students' challenges in mastering vocabulary and evaluates the potential of digital platforms such as Spotify in supporting the language learning process. This study uses a quantitative descriptive survey approach, 60 students from SMAN 25 Bandung participated in a five-point Likert scale questionnaire to assess their perceptions of Spotify’s usefulness, ease of access, educational benefits, and obstacles encountered. The results showed that students positively rated Spotify as an effective, enjoyable, and accessible vocabulary learning tool. Most participants agreed that listening to English songs helped them remember new vocabulary, improve pronunciation, and broaden their understanding of formal and informal expressions. The descriptive statistical analysis showed that four out of five leading indicators were categorized as “High” and one indicator was “Very High” regarding perceived benefits. However, there were several obstacles, such as difficulty understanding fast-paced lyrics, slang in lyrics, informal language use, and background music distractions. Despite these obstacles, students were highly motivated and preferred song-based learning methods over traditional, conventional, textbook-based ones. These findings emphasize Spotify’s potential as an effective vocabulary learning medium that aligns with the digital preferences of today’s generation and support the argument for integrating technology in EFL.

Abstract

This research focuses on developing interactive PowerPoint materials using the ADDIE model of development. Employing the Research and Development (R&D) method, the research involved first-semester students from the English Study Program at Universitas Riau, Pekanbaru, who were enrolled in a Vocabulary course. Data were collected through a needs analysis questionnaire and expert judgment validation. A total of 38 students participated in the needs analysis. Expert validation was administrated from three domains: media, material, and pedagogy. The findings showed a preference for interactive PowerPoint as a learning media. The media validation results revealed “highly valid” scores: 85.5% for the "Food" topic and 92.7% for "Art and Literature." Material validation yielded a 96% score for both topics, while teaching validation showed a 90% score. These results suggest that interactive PowerPoint materials developed using the ADDIE model are highly valid.

Abstract

This study aimed to examine the metacognitive awareness listening strategies that students commonly employ in their listening comprehension. The study used explanatory mixed-method research design. The data were acquired using a questionnaire adapted from Vandergrift (2006) and through an interview. The respondents in this study were fifth-semester students of the English Study Program at Riau University The respondents who filled out the questionnaire was 75 students of the 108 existing students. The results showed that students' metacognitive awareness in listening strategies were very high. The strategies were classified into: problem solving (4.00), mental translation (3.78), planning/evaluation (3.77), directed attention (3.58), and person knowledge (3.51). This result showed that most English Department students use problem solving as their listening strategy. It also shows that students often used their understanding of the context rather than translating word-for-word in their heads; compared the impact of their listening efforts; maintained concentration and stay focused in listening. In line with the qualitative data also showed that there were positive responses that students applied in using metacognitive listening strategies for their learning process. In the interview, students also shared some of the things they do when they lose focus. Such as pause the audio, relax the body and refresh the mind, and focus only on the key words. It also shows that students use more words they understand to guess the meaning of unfamiliar words. In addition, students make more comparisons between their background knowledge and their listening context.

Abstract

Providing a good chart makes a good impact as well for the learning, especially students’ understanding. This classroom action research aimed to enhance senior high school students’ understanding of English modals through the use of multimodal digital chart media. The study was conducted in two cycles at a senior high school in Bogor, involving 31 students of XI grade. Each cycle consists of: planning, action, observation, and reflection. The study employed a mixed-methods design; collecting data through pre-tests, post-tests, and documentation including feedback from the English teacher and students’ test scores analyzed via Quizizz. In the first cycle, static printed charts were used. Due to unclear layout and small font size, students’ engagement and comprehension remained limited, as reflected in the average post-test score of 62%, up from 50% in the pre-test. In the second cycle, digital charts were integrated into PowerPoint presentations, which offered clearer visualization and better accessibility. This resulted in improved understanding, with average scores rising from 66% in the pre-test to 71% in the post-test. The result shows that well-designed digital charts combining visuals, keywords, and structured content can significantly improve students’ grasp of abstract grammatical topics like modals. The study recommends incorporating visually engaging, relevant, and culturally appropriate digital media to support English language teaching and to foster deeper cognitive engagement in the classroom.
