Abstract

Ethnobotany is a tradition in utilizing variety of local plants. Ethnobotany tradition practices are well-existed at social life of inland tribes in Indonesia. Local communities of Mentawai tribe on the Siberut Island is one example. So far, the ethnobotany tradition has been done as a routine daily activity and it has not yet been managed as local ecotourism business. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to explain the potential and strategy to develop ethnobotany tradition of Mentawai tribe as a sustainable ecotourism. The research method used in this study was qualitative approach with interviews and direct observations. The results showed that ethnobotany tradition practices were environmentally based activities that have prioritized environmental conservation aspect. Various ethnobotany tradition practices were potentially to be developed as commodity for local ecotourism packages through business management approach. The positive impacts derived from the development of ethnobotanical ecotourism were: 1). Conservation of useful plant diversity; 2). Preservation of the rural communities‟ local wisdom; 3). Creating the economic and social benefits; 4). Public awareness about education of the environmental conservation. Keywords: Business, Ethnobotany, Ecotourism, Conservation

Abstract

The quality management of biological laboratories can be detected through laboratory personnel evaluation that includes an evaluation of the quality of the laboratory, evaluation of student satisfaction as a practitioner, as well as the evaluation of the lecturer of biology, laboratory chief and head of the biology education courses as service providers practicum. This study aimed to analyze the satisfaction of practicum student of biology education S1 FKIP - UKI to quality of lecturer performance in providing service practicum. The usefullness of this research can be used as an evaluation of the quality of lecturer performance so that the results can be used for follow up as consideration in designing the management of the laboratory. Samples are students of Biology Education FKIP UKI third semester until seventh. The collection of data obtained by observation techniques, distribution of questionnaires and interviews. The data were collected and analyzed using descriptive methods percentage. The results of this study showed that the students of Biology Education FKIP UKI are satisfied with the services provided by a lecturer practicum. Keywords: student satisfaction, laboratories quality, management of biological laboratories quality, lecturer performance

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of light intensity on stomatal density and shade effect on the formation of plant stomata antanan. This study using 60 samples with two treatments of 30 samples from places with shade and 30 samples from places without shade. The method used to observe the stomata in the leaf surface is a replica method of transparent nail polish. The parameters observed in this study is the density of stomata. A data were analyzed using SPSS 21 using t-test, to determine the effect of light intensity on stomatal density antanan plants. Statistical tests showed that there is a real difference between the density of stomata on the leaves of plants antanan in places without shade and the shade on the level of 5% ie t = 10.848> table = 2.045. It can be concluded that the intensity of sunlight due to shading greatly affect the formation and density of stomata on the leaves of plants antanan.Key word: Stomata, Antanan, Density, Intensity.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the effect of turmeric powder and fish meal administration after the productivity declining period on hemoglobin level and total erythrocyte of japan quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica L.). This study use the Completely Randomized Design (CRD) and analyzed with ANOVA followed by a Duncan test. Sixty quails were divided into four groups, each consist of three quails with five replications. the study concludes on the ninth month. The treatments were AP0: Quails were given standard feed, AP1: Quails were given standard feed and turmeric 54mg / quail / day on 7-8 months old, BP0: Quails were given standard feed plus 85% fish meal, 15 %, BP1: Quails were given feed standard 85%, 15% fish meal, and and turmeric powder 54mg/ quail /day on 7-8 months old. The results of this study showed that administration of turmeric powder in the feed affected hemoglobin level and total erythrocyte. Addition of turmeric powder in the feed can repair blood metabolism japan quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica L.). While, fish meal in the feed did not affect hemoglobin level and total erythrocyte the japan quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica L.).Keywords: Fish Meal, Hemoglobin level, Japan Quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica L.), Total Erythrocyte, and Turmeric

Abstract

Raptors are considered biologically important, environmentally sensitive and indicators of the health of the ecosystem. Breeding period is a critical phase for raptors that at present are categorized as rare and threatened species Nest site selection can have important nesting success consequences in raptors.. In relation to this, a spatial analysis has been undertaken to assess the relationship between landscape structure and the presence of predators’ nests in the landscape of Telaga Warna, Kabupaten Bogor - West Java Indonesia. The methods used in the study are the qualitative method by using descriptive analysis and the quantitative one by applying the Fragstat version 2.0. The study used four circular buffer at distances of 250, 500, 750 and 1000m around each nest-tree to analyze the relationship between raptor nest occurrence and landscape structure. The result suggests that the landscape of Telaga Warna is a mosaic consisting of natural and artificial vegetation of different structure. The three species of raptors tend to select a nesting site that has low degree of landscape contrast at distance of 250 m around nest. However, in terms of landscape complexity, there is not great difference among the nesting sites at distance of 250m. Edge density around black eagle nest is higher compare the other nest at distance of 250-1000 m. Prey density is high and distributed at seven hunting area at Telaga Warna. Characteristic differences in nest site selection may be due to landscape structure at different scales around the nest.Keyword : landscape, raptor, nest

Abstract

Third nodus from branch of Gigantochloa apus were used as sampel in the making of histologic preparat. The preparat were made using parafin method with safranin-fast green dye series (Saa 1958, with modification). In the slicing phase, sampel were sliced verticaly (cross section) and horizontaly (longitudinal section). The vertical preparat were used to observe the formation of prophylls in nodus tip, meanwhile the horizontal preparat were used to observe the position of bud in nodus tip. Based on observation in vertical preparat, prophylls’ formation shows bud in amount 1,2, and 3. Meanwhile, observation in horizontal preparat shows that the second and third bud in each nodus is come from first nodus. In summary, branch complement in branch nodus of G. apus in nature is come from one primary bud that can make another bud (secondary bud). So based on that branch complement forming, we were able to know that branching pattern of G. apus is single branching. Keywords : branch complement; branching pattern; Gigantochloa apus; parafin method
