The ability to use a language to convey ideas, feelings and thoughts orally is called speaking. This shows that speaking skills are crucial to learn, including for students at school. In this way, teachers are expected to be more innovative in finding learning methods or models that can improve students’ speaking skills. The small group discussion learning model is considered to be the right treatment because it can increase students’ confidence in speaking, increase interaction between students, and students become more active in contributing to learning. The aim of carrying out this research is to find out how the application of the Small Group Discussion learning model to students affects their speaking skills, especially in conveying opinions orally in English. This research used a quantitative approach with experimental research method. This research was carried out at MA Plus Darul Hufadz Jatinangor. Participants in this research were students from classes X-A and X-B, each class consisting of 20 students. Data was collected using tests in the form of presentations from students. The results show that implementing the Small Group Discussion can have a significant influence on students’ ability to convey opinions orally using English. This is proven by the average (mean) score of the experimental class learning results reaching 74,20, while the mean score of the control class only reached 65,00. The millennial generation in Surakarta faces the imperative need to preserve and fortify the essence of Javanese culture amidst the pervasive forces of globalization driven by internet technology. The emergence of Permadani Studio is perceived as a means to aid millennials in understanding and cherishing local culture. However, what is the social structure within the studio and how does it contribute to the preservation of Javanese culture?. This study adopted a qualitative approach, utilizing in-depth interviews and Focus Discussion Groups to explore the role of Permadani Studio in maintaining the richness of Javanese culture among the millennial generation in Surakarta. Data analysis employed descriptive qualitative methods and Anthony Giddens' structuration theory framework to comprehend the interplay between social structure and individual action in the context of cultural preservation. Through the lens of Anthony Giddens' social structuralism approach, the Pambiwara courses at Permadani Studio demonstrate how social structures, such as Javanese cultural norms and values, shape the institutional framework for cultural preservation. Millennials and course instructors are active agents in rejuvenating cultural preservation practices tailored to their era, showcasing the intricate interaction between structure and agency in safeguarding cultural heritage. These findings underscore the significance of collaboration between social structure and individual agents in addressing the challenges posed by globalization to preserve local culture.

However, students now have a lot of difficulties when speaking or just saying words in English. Because they are afraid of making mistakes in pronouncing good vocabulary. Even though speaking is a goal that must be achieved in learning English. One suitable solution is the problem-based learning approach, which allows students to participate actively in their learning, share ideas, and boost their self-confidence. This study aims to find out whether the problem-based learning method (PBL) with the use of song lyrics in learning can improve students' understanding of speaking skills. This research was conducted using a quasi-exsperimental quantitative method. This research involved 30 students in grades XI-1 and 30 students in grades XI-3 of SMA Karya Pembangunan Cicalengka. Students will be placed in two classes, namely the experimental group and the control group. The class begins with a Pre-test, and the Post-test is carried out at the last meeting after the treatment. The researcher obtained data from the results of the pre-test and post-test of students. From the data analysis, the scores in the experimental group and the control group increased. However the improvement in the experimental group was better than in the control group. In the experimental group, the average pre-test score was 57.9, and the post-test score was 75.6. The control group's pre-test average was 54.86, and the post-test was 66.53. The data showed that the experimental group's post-test average (75.6) was higher than the control group's (66.53), supporting the hypothesis that problem-based learning with song lyrics improves students' speaking skills.

In this research, we analyzed the frequency, usage, and changes of pronouns in the translation of Satan’s Slave 2: Communion. This research was conducted by examining changes in subject or object pronouns from Indonesian to English in the movie subtitle. We transferred the clean version of the subtitle into a spreadsheet, into which we incorporated necessary context information such as presented in 3 categories; pronoun to pronoun, pronoun to omission, and pronoun to reference. The results show that the use and change of pronouns in the translation process of Satan’s Slave 2 are attached by at least two aspects: grammatical and socio-cultural aspects. The difference in the principle of linguistic rules between Indonesian and English becomes an important factor behind the transposition and modulation of pronouns in the translation process. The sociocultural differences between Indonesian and English also need to be carefully examined before translating, because there are significant differences in the use of pronouns between Indonesian and English, especially related to sociocultural aspects that affect the use of language towards interlocutors.

Thinking-Aloud or Think-Aloud Protocols have been used to study thinking processes in varied fields such as psychology, business, sports, industry, and education. Recently, studies have tried to see its application in teaching in both offline and online modes. Despite its success, as demonstrated by these studies, controversies concerning the believability of thinking aloud and the process of reactivity have been raised. However, no explicit solution has been provided. In response to the issues, this paper critically reviewed examples of think-aloud protocols using Bowles’s guide to TAP (2008). The results show that (1) problems of the reactivity process stem from the nature of the tasks given, and (2) to minimize the problems of reactivity, the TAP data collection procedure should move from the least to the most intervention of the researcher.

As one of English basic skills, writing is considered the most difficult skill for students, such as arranging correct sentences, writing the topic sentence, organizing ideas, and lack of vocabulary. Therefore, an appropriate learning model and media that support understanding and development of writing skills can help students to increase their writing ability. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of using Project-Based Learning through the Canva application to improve students’ writing achievement in describing historical and tourism places as one of the basic competencies that students should master at the senior high school level. This study aimed to find out whether Project-Based Learning and the Canva application influence students’ writing and to analyze the development of students’ writing after implementing PjBL by making written text using the Canva application. The writers used a quantitative method which is a quasi-experimental research design by applying a non-equivalent pre-test post-test control group design. The data were obtained through the writing test in collecting students’ scores. To analyze the data, the writer used a t-test with a significant level of 0.05. The samples were two classes in the tenth grade of SMA Karya Pembangunan Cicalengka which consisted of 66 students. Based on the research analysis, students’ average score on the pre-test was 55.3 and students’ average score on the post-test was 75.37. The result also showed that ttable was 1.669 and tvalue was 2.924, which means that ttable was higher thantvalue at significant level 5%. It indicated thatH0 is rejected and Ha is accepted. Based on the result of t-test calculation, it can be stated that the use of PjBL through Canva application is effective to facilitate students in improving students’ learning achievement, especially in writing descriptive text about historical and tourism places.

A journal article review is an academic writing that summarizes and assesses others’ research-based articles. For doctoral students, reviewing a journal article is usually to train them for building their argument and broadening their knowledge of an issue. The purpose of this study is to investigate the quality of article reviews written in English by one class consisting of twelve Indonesian EFL doctoral students in their first semester at a university in Semarang, Indonesia. Twelve reviews written by the students were collected. The evaluation of their writings is based on Systemic Functional Grammar, particularly the interpersonal metafunction analysis, that is, the analysis of generic structure and appraisal. Therefore, this study employs textual analyses. The analysis of generic structure refers to the template from the Writing Centre of Thompson Rivers University, and the analysis of appraisal follows Martin and White’s appraisal system (2005). The discussion of this article explains the generic structure and lexico-grammatical realizations of evaluative stances used by the students. The findings indicate that not all doctoral students can organize their review following the generic structure and optimize the use of appraisal items. This exploratory investigation provides some pedagogical implications for the teaching of academic writings in EFL contexts.
