Abstract

Anyone on earth may at one time or another reflects him or herself in a way he or she feels comfortable—be it as simple as writing up a phrase “Go to Hell with Communism!” on a wall of an old building. In this respect, he or she has reflected him or herself that he or she does not agree with the ideology of communism. The current study investigated to justify that literary works reflect the ‘selves’ of the authors in one or more possible ways. A poet may, to reflect him or herself, be characterized as employing particular styles or diction. A novelist may try to involve in one of the characters he or she has developed in order to reflect him or herself. In this study, a novel entitled “Pride and Prejudice” by Jane Austen (1813) was investigated to justify that the author (Austen) reflected herself in one of the characters in the novel. The findings reveal that Austen tried to manifest herself in one of the characters called ‘Elizabeth Bennet’ in three different ways: (1) how she behaved in her family (loving all family members, especially being close to her father), (2) how she spent most of the time—reading to broaden the horizon of thinking. As a result, she could (3) skillfully negotiate with other people through their positive sides. The study concludes that everyone, of whatever professions he or she has, will reflect him or herself in a way he or she may not realize.

Abstract

The superhero universe has always been an attraction in the world of film industry. The birth of superhuman ideas has made people increasingly interested in taking the storyline. This research is a literature study on the existence of a new world in Indonesian cinema that takes the theme of Indonesia's superhero universe competes against the universe of American superheroes. The purpose of this study is to compare Indonesian and American superhero films in order to understand the complete concept of depicting Indonesian superheroes in the process of switching from comics to films comparing with the same concepts in American superheroes. This study employed a descriptive qualitative method by comparing films from the Indonesian superhero universe namely Bumilangit Cinematic Universe and Jagad Satria Dewa Cinematic Universe compared to the American superhero universe namely Marvel Cinematic Universe and DC Cinematic Universe. The results obtained that there were some similarities in the process of character formation in each of the heroes that were created, this could be described with similarity in multiple personalities before and after becoming superheroes, costumes worn, storylines and special effects produced in the film. There were fundamental differences that were seen in the background of Indonesian culture that was different from the concept of American culture. Indonesian superheroes also highlighted Pencak Silat as the original identity and characteristics of Indonesia. This research concluded that a story with a superhero concept had the same story pattern such as a person with a superhero alter ego and deep with heroic storyline even though they were presented by different countries.

Abstract

This paper, which is under Transnational American Studies and Postcolonial Studies, aims to analyze a process of creating a colonial culture which involves cultural imposition, adoption, and resistance in Lynne Kutsukake’s The Translation of Love. This novel depicts postwar Japanese society that lives under American power after the end of World War II while undergo kyodatsu (the period of an economic, social and moral crisis caused by the war). This paper is a qualitative research that utilizes three theories, including cultural imposition, mimicry and symbolic resistance. The finding, shows the devaluation of Japanese cultural identity which used to oppose the claim of “otherness” by the West. In cultural imposition, the United States manages to impose American ideology, language, lifestyle, customs and fashion through various ways such as media, social interaction, social obligation and school curriculum. Meanwhile, in cultural adoption, postwar Japanese adopt American cultures in which it asserts that there is a shift of postwar Japanese cultural orientation that tends to celebrate American culture as a “sign of liberation”. Then, in symbolic resistance, postwar Japanese resistance toward the United States as the occupying power is only manifested in subversive everyday gestures which include covert and overt form. In short, this analysis shows that, during U.S. occupation, postwar Japan only becomes “a pawn” in the United States’ postwar plan for global dominance by rebuilding a new Japanese society under American influence.

Abstract

This study aims at analyzing the reflection of IRF (Initiation-Response-Feedback) in speaking class and investigating the dominant sequence among I, R and F. IRF is a pattern of classroom interaction found by Sinclair and Coulthard in 1975 that stands for teacher initiation, students’ response and feedback by teacher. Initiation is the movement in which teacher initiates an interaction to get the response of the students, then teacher gives feedback to the students’ response. To obtain the data, the researcher conducted classroom observation in speaking class in one university in West Java. The result showed that student response becomes the dominant sequence of IRF in speaking class. Furthermore, it is recommended that the teachers should maintain the effectiveness of classroom interaction and give much opportunity to the students to take role in classroom verbal interaction through reflecting the IRF pattern in teaching learning process particularly in speaking classroom.Keywords: IRF, classroom interaction, speaking class

Abstract

China and ASEAN have long history on their relationship. One of ASEAN countries, Indonesia, along with China are two big countries in Asia with similar national interests and objectives in partnership, which are peace and prosperity of G20, APEC, 10+1, and 10+3, in which Indonesia is an active participant. One of the cooperation between China and ASEAN is through education. Indonesia may promote student exchange as well as proposing the idea of students exchange in various forums such as ASEAN-China free-trade, culture, tourism, education and many others. However, the data shown that the proportion of ASEAN students in China do not reflect the proportion of population of each ASEAN countries.  Indonesia, the largest country by population, only sends the second biggest number of students to China behind Thailand, which puts the most students in China Education.  This paper discusses the ups and downs of Indonesia-China relationship in education. SWOT analysis is used to see Indonesia-China relationship in the perspective of ASEAN. It can be concluded that cooperation among countries is inevitable measure facing the more challenging world. However the rough past has created mistrust and prejudice on both sides. But the need to collaborate has shown to be beneficial in promoting education cooperation.

Abstract

The objective of the research aims to investigate whether or not the use of CALL (Computer Assisted Language Learning) with Oxford Smart Choice Multi-ROM as an audiovisual learning software can develop the listening ability of the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Model Parepare. The research applied quasi-experimental design. The population of this research was the tenth year students of SMA Negeri 1 Model Parepare. The total number of population is 411 students and two classes of twelve classes were taken as sample by using cluster random sampling. The findings of this study as the effect of Oxford Smart Choice Multi-ROM to develop the student’s listening ability, as shown by t-test value (4.6) that higher than t-table value (2.000). It means that the listening ability of the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Model Parepare develop significantly after they are taught by using CALL (Computer Assisted Language Learning) with Oxford Smart Choice Multi-ROM.

Abstract

The need to provide equal education access through an inclusive system to students with difficulties (henceforth SwD) has witnessed a substantially growing interest in the last recent years. As a standard practice of education and accountability system is inseparable, the need to include SwD in large-scale assessments has also become a central interest of many pedagogical practitioners around the world. This situation has later initiated the invention of test accommodation. With their challenges and difficulties, SwD are not expected to take part in the regular procedure of assessments. This paper, with regard to the above assertions, seeks to examine the accommodation practice in Indonesian educational system. It will primarily focus on analysing the types of accommodation applied in the country’s English high-stake assessment and the evaluation of the effectiveness of the ongoing practice. Contrary to common belief, accommodation in a language test is not exclusively aimed to accommodate students with mobility and cognitive challenges. Test accommodation is also aimed at helping students who face difficulty in the language of classroom instructions. However, due to the limited space reason and the fact that the phenomenon of learning difficulties caused by the inability of students to understand the language of instruction is uncommonly reported in Indonesian educational settings, this paper will primarily focus on the accommodation issue for students with physical and mental difficulty. Apart from highlighting on the history of test accommodation as well as the related issues, this paper will cover the nature of Indonesia’s practice towards test accommodation and discuss its real implementation. Further recommendations on how the test accommodation should be conducted in Indonesia educational settings will be discussed.

Abstract

This paper discusses the benefits of by using digital storytelling in order to improve the polytechnic learners in learning activity of English for Specific Purposes. In this case, digital storytelling is used as advertising media for promoting agricultural products in English registered in Technology of Agricultural Product study program at PDD UNS, Indonesia. The subjects of this research were fourth semester learners of Technology of Agricultural Product in PDD UNS who followed English 2 class. The data were collected from the learners’ surveys and the video projects. The method of this research was descriptive qualitative research to evaluate the learners English public speaking in product advertisement by using digital storytelling. The result shows that digital storytelling is a useful learning approach to improve both non-linguistic skills and productive linguistic skills in English advertisement. There were some weaknesses of by using digital storytelling in English learning. The learners would have some difficulties if there was no internet access. Besides, electronic tools such as handycam or camera recorder is needed to record the video. Then, a video-editing skill also can be determining whether the video plot is good or not. According to the result which has shown above, it can be stated that the activeness of the learners depend on how the lecturer bring the material during teaching learning process. Through the attractive teaching method or technique, it can help the learners to build their self-confidence.

Abstract

This study investigated the interference of Bahasa Indonesia passive voice norm on English sentence. There are many studies that investigated the interference of native language on the learning of target language. Most of the studies talked about interference in the level of lexical, grammatical, phonetic, syntactical, and many more. However, the study about interference of a norm have never been discussed before. Thus, it is important to conduct this study to give some prove that norm of languages may interfere language learning. This study involved 50 students of Tour and Travel Business Department at Sekolah Tinggi Pariwisata (STP) AMPTA Yogyakarta. The data was collected by giving students 3 sentences in Bahasa Indonesia and they had to write them in English. The sentences that the students had produced were compared to the correct one. The finding shows that most of the students’ sentences were interfered by the norm of passive voice in Bahasa Indonesia. It is due to the lack of students’ understanding toward the concept of passive voice norms in both of Bahasa Indonesia and English. Thus, the teacher must give clear explanation about the norm of passive voice in both of languages.

Abstract

Over time, as secularization took root in Black churches during the CivilRights era, the prevalent framework in understanding African Americanspirituality discourse has shifted from theology to sociology. This paper tries to discern this major shift from the black literature perspective. It aims to discuss the main charachers' paradoxical state of mind in understanding God in the novel The Color Purple. The 1982 Pulitzer Prize for fiction winner is organized around an intimate conversation between two female characters, Celie and Shug Avery, whose understanding of God were challanged by complexity of sexism and racism in the black family. A sociological approach is adopted to understand the characters' dynamic concept of God. Discussion in this paper suggested that Alice Walker's naturalist theology is embodied in Celie and Shug Avery’s conceptualizationof God in the novel.Keywords: Black Theology, The Color Purple, God in Black Literature.
