Abstract

A new species, Begonia hooveriana Wiriad., is described from Tanah Toraja in South Sulawesi. It belongs to Begonia section Petermannia and brings the total number of Begonia species native to Sulawesi to 43 species.

Abstract

Pandanaceae is placed in the superorder Pandaniflorae and the order Pandanales, indicating its uniqueness when compared with the other seed plants. Pandanaceae contains three genera, Pandanus, Sararanga and Freycinetia. Limited collections seem to be one reason why botanical illustrations are made, so that people can enjoy their "collections" from a picture painted on canvas. Botanical illustration is one type of record that can also give evidence about whether the plant exists. In addition, botanical illustration can give information about the growth of the plant, and historical evidence can be traced. There is no doubt that Pandanus has also been well illustrated. Later, further developments in Pandanus research obviously influenced the illustrations of Pandanus.

Abstract

The difficulties encountered in this group could not be solved by the application of this key to the numerous specimens I could study. In the type specimen of Scirpus pakapakensis Stapf from Borneo, Mt. Kinabalu, the stems are not trigonous. Although in Thwaites CP306 (type collection of Scirpus subcapitatus) the mucros of the leaf-sheaths and of the outermost glume are practically smooth, they are scaberulous in several Indian specimens otherwise quite agreeing with the type collection. In some specimens from Mt. Kinabalu the stems are slightly scaberulous at the top; for the rest they agree very well with the type of Scirpus clarkei Stapf.

Abstract

In this revision of the Malaysian species of the genus Rhododendron L. 261 species and 55 varieties and forms have been distinguished, of which 96 species (some obviously hybrids) and 29 varieties are described as new; 10 species have been reduced to the rank of a variety or form, and 67 species, varieties, or forms have for the first time been regarded as synonym. In the keys to several subsections or series the extra-Malaysian species are included.

Abstract

1.Papuodendron C. T. White is reduced to Hibiscus L.; the species is renamed:H. papuodendron Kosterm. 2. Hibiscus hooglandianus represents a new species from New Guinea. 3. New species in Pentace: P. microlepidota Kosterm., P. paludosa Kosterm. and P. adenophora Kosterm. 4. Parapentace Gagnepain is included in Burretiodendron Rehd. As the species of Parapentace were published without latin diagnosis, the following new species of Burretiodendron are presented: B. tonkinensis Kosterm. and B. brilletii Kosterm. 5.Two new species of Heritiera (H. rumphii Kosterm. and H. ornithocephala Kosterm.) are described; additional notes on H. littoralis from Madagascar, H. longi petiolata and H. arafurensis are presented. 6. Heritiera burmensis Kosterm. is reduced to a synonym of H. macrophylla Kurz. 7.Sterculia cubensis Urb. is referred to Hildcgardia; the curious distributional area of Hildegardia is stressed. 8. A note on Hildegardia erythrosipkon Kosterm. is presented. 9.Sterculia ankaranensis Arenes is relegated to Hildcgardia. 10. Sterculia heritieriformis Arenes represents a mixture of Heritiera littoralis and Firmiana colorata. 11. Sterculia guppyi Greenwood is a synonym of Firmiana diversifolia A. Gray. 12. Ficus serp-yllifolia Blume belongs actually to Apocynaceae and is renamed: Micrcchites serpyllifolia (Bl.) Kosterm. It is suggested that M. radicans Markgr. is conspecific with this wide-spread species. 13. Ortholobium Gagnepain, being inadmissable under the Rules (no latin diagnosis) is replaced by Cylindrokelupha Kosterm. The following new species are presented: C. poilanei Kosterm., C. platyphylla Kosterm.; C. annamcnse Kosterm. and C. chevalieri Kosterm.

Abstract

1. Seven species of the genus Diplodiscus are described, of which three (D. microlepis, D. parviflorus and D. decumbens) are new to science, and one (D. hookerianus) was formerly described as Pentace (for the description of D. decumbens cf. p. 264). 2. The area of distribution of the genus covers the Malay Peninsula, Borneo and the Philippines. 3. The affinities of the genus are discussed. 4. A key to the species is presented.

Abstract

The genus Serianthes was erected by Bentham to accomodate plants which Wallich had called Inga grandiflora, from Singapore, and those which Bertero had called Acacia myriadenia, from Tahiti. It has been accepted from the first, as it is amply distinct from Acacia and reasonably so from Inga. though it is usually placed in the tribe Ingeae. Serianthes is widespread in the southwest Pacific, usually, though not always, occurring on islands, frequently on calcareous or serpentine rocks or their derived soils. It is seldom abundant, though in places common. In habit it varies from a dwarf tree or large shrub to a forest giant. It is reported to be an excellent timber tree, but seems nowhere to be abundant enough to be important commercially. Since Bentham's original description in 1844, eleven additional species and one variety have been ascribed to it in addition to the original S. grandiflora. Three of these do not belong in Serianthes. Most of the specimens in herbaria, excepting those called S. grandiflora, have been misidentified, usually being placed in S. myriadenia. Although I first saw this genus growing and collected it in Raivavae and Rurutu in 1934, my interest in it was aroused by failure, in 1950, to find a satisfactory disposition for specimens collected in Palau, similar to those that Kanehira had referred to S. grandiflora, which they clearly were not. The more I tried to make sense of the herbarium material available in a number of herbaria the more frustrating the problem became. Notes were accumulated in a most haphazard and unsystematic manner, as I had no intention of doing more than identifying my Micronesian material. Finally it became evident that over half of the entities discernible in the material examined were undescribed, and I felt a certain obligation to work up at least a synopsis of the genus.
